Hardware :: Downgrading/Switching From Penryn MBP To Penryn Black MacBook

Jul 14, 2008

I think I have to give a brief history of my Mac life first. I previously owned the last generation iBook, then a MacBook (entry-level) 3rd gen before I upgraded to Penryn MBP this April.

I bought the MBP because I fell in love with the keyboard when I got to try the display unit in one of the Apple resellers here (I am from Manila, btw) so I sold my MacBook then upgraded to the Penryn MBP (entrylevel - 2.4ghz, 15inch).

OS X :: IMac 2007 Aluminum RAM Installation - Get Black Screen With 2 Gig Stick

Sep 8, 2009

I bought my aluminum imac when it was released in late 2007. I had a 1 gigabyte stick up until now, but I decided to upgrade to 2x2 gigabyte sticks. When I took out the 1 stick and placed the new ones in, my computer would sound like it turned on, but the system really did not boot up. I have tried many configurations to see what the problem with the RAM is, and all I could figure out is that the computer will only boot up if the original 1 gig stick is in one slot. I checked both sticks with this, and they seem to register on my mac when I check the "About This Mac" section. Basically, I get a black screen if I use only a 2 gig stick, or both 2 gig sticks. I can have a maximum of 3 gigs so far, but I really would like all 4 that I paid for. I'm not so sure that it's a problem with the ram, especially because it is recognized by the system, but it can't boot up the system, so I am simply dumbfounded. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? I just recently installed Snow Leopard prior to getting the RAM if that has any importance.

MacBook Pro :: Replace Aluminum Bezel With Black Bezel?

Jan 15, 2010

I have a 17" unibody MBP with the matte screen option. I've had it since last July and, although I'm extremely happy with it, I still wish it had the black bezel.

Does anyone know of an easy way to swap the bezel or if any company has made an alternative like a black vinyl sticker cover? I've searched high and low with no luck.

I know you can purchase the bezel/glass front mount for the mbp, but I don't need the glass and I don't know if you can separate the two?

MacBook Pro :: Penryn LCD Brightness Whine?

Mar 5, 2008

I originally purchased a SR MBP a couple weeks ago and come to find out, the LCD was bad and Apple declared it DOA. I went to the Apple store and swapped it out for a new 2.4GHz Penryn MBP. I am running Vista via bootcamp and am noticing a high pitched whine coming from the top left hand side of the keyboard, near the LCD. Puzzled as to the cause, I started playing with some controls to see if anything made a difference and noticed that when I dim the LCD to the min, it almost goes away. When I turn off the LCD it does in fact go away and when I increase it to maximum brightness it also vanishes. The noise seems to be the loudest when the LCD brightness is set in the middle. This problem only occurs in Vista, not OSX. I thoroughly toyed with the brightness in OSX and listed carefully, but like I said, not noise is present.

Should I be concerned and call Apple, or just ride it out? It does bother me a bit considering I use Vista for Office 2007 tasks. However, since the problem only occurs in Vista and not OSX, it this indicative of a software issue, or do you guys think it is hardware related? cmm26red

MacBook Pro :: Is Intel X25G2 Waste For Penryn MBP?

Dec 12, 2009

I bought 160GB X25G2 only to realize (later) that my MBP17 SATA is indeed limited to 1.5Gb so it made me think - shouln'd I utilize this Intel in my i7 iMac and get some cheaper slower SSD for my MBP? If so which one?

Or is the read speed only half of benefits of SSD and the access time and write management being the other part? (I read about some issues with jmicron controllers etc.)

MacBook :: Will Penryn T8300 Work With T7200 Logic Board

Jan 18, 2010

I take a T7200 board and put it in a penryn T8300 machine? I know little things like the battery connector and the inverter board connector change from removing so many of these boards, but I never kept good documentation of the connector types between the different boards.

I am totally fine with this not being the same specs as it was before, it will still be a nice machine, but I don't feel like spending $500 on a logic board for it.

MacBook :: No Sound On Aluminum 2.0 Ghz

Nov 15, 2009

So my MacBook has recently lost it's ability to output audio through the built-in speakers or another device. I'm quite frustrated as I watch and listen to tons of multimedia, and not being to hear a thing is quite sad. When I hit the volume up/down keys, all I get is the on screen audio level indicator and thats it. I've restarted a few times already, resetted the PRAM as well as the SMC and nothing improved. I want to try avoid taking it to the Genius Bar as I'm really not going to have the time to do so this week, and I believe there is a simpler solution.

MacBook Pro :: I7 Mid 2010 Textured Aluminum Lid

Nov 13, 2010

i have a question: Has anyone else noticed that the new mid 2010 macbook pros (i7) seem to have a rougher more textured aluminum lid than the older ones or any other macbook (pros)? Background info: I first thought this was just me being too fussy about minor details. I compared my brand new mbp with an older one from 2009 and definitely felt the difference between the aluminum of the lid. I went to several stores and they were surprised themselves about the textured aluminum lid. They first told me this was some kind of production fault and I should swap the macbook pro. Well, the next day after cloning my drive and bringing the macbook in for a swap they told me that they looked at other macbooks and they figured this texture thing seemed to be standard. To be honest - I didn't believe them because they couldn't show it to me hands on - so I went to another store where I found mid 2010 macbooks with a more smooth aluminum lid than the one I have.

Well all in all I am quite confused. I googled the hell out of this topic and only found one post confirming my issue - here I don't know if Apple has some kind of release doc for each charge of macbooks they produce, or maybe some tolerance level for the fabrication of the aluminum.

MacBook :: Aluminum - Underclocked In Bootcamp?

Nov 17, 2008

I recently bought a 2.4GHz Aluminium enclosure Macbook, and love it to bits. However, when running Windows XP Pro under Bootcamp, it seems like the CPU is underclocked. Both CPUz and CoreTemp report the CPU clock frequency as 1.6GHz, rather than the 2.4GHz it should be (multiplier at 6x, and FSB at 265 Hz). Is this a design decision? If so, why? If not, can I get into EFI to fix the speeds?
