I recently bought a late 2011 15" macbook pro. Lately it emits a single beep every 5 minutes while it's running charger power. It emits the beep whilst charging and when the battery is full and the charger is still in. I've done a hardware test which didn't detect any hardware problems. The battery appears to be in good health and so does the charger.

I acquired a Unibody MacBook that experienced a little water damage. The logic board was definitely shot, so I replaced that yesterday and initially the machine was working like a champ, save for a few issues:
1. The machine tries charging my battery, but eventually gives up and decides that there is no battery in the machine (there is a battery in there, and it shouldn't be dead yet, should it?)
2. I've been experiencing an issue in which the MacBook and charger aren't getting along. I've got two different chargers, both of which work on my pre-Unibody MBP consistently but sometimes I'll plug one into the MacBook and get no light, and in other cases I'll plug it in and get just a very faint green light. In either case, the machine won't start up. I usually tinker with the machine for a few minutes, taking the back plate off and checking connections, waiting a few minutes, and it's back up again.
3. Before the machine starts up, the LED blinks three times. I initially thought this was just a blink pattern to notify the user that the logic board doesn't have a serial number yet, but I've run the serializer and entered a SN in, and it still does that. Is this normal for these Macs?
I know that these MacBooks are a little more intricately tied to the battery than previous Macs. Does anyone think the above problems (at least 1 and 2) would be solved by a replacement battery? Or does it sound like something else is wrong (perhaps the DC in board)? I've never heard of anyone needing to replace a Magsafe DC in board (and from their low prices online, I'm led to believe that they rarely fail).
After upgrading to snow leopard my charger works intermittently, could this be a software issue or just a coincidence

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an early 2008 Macbook and it's been running pretty good up until this afternoon. Now I'm having what is apparently not all that uncommon a problem, where my laptop will only remain turned on for as long as my laptop is plugged in. The second I remove the charger it turns off, and it won't turn back on again until I plug the charger in again. I had bought a replacement battery not all that long ago so I'm not sure if that would be the issue. It could be related that last night I installed more RAM into my laptop. I say could be because I was using the laptop NOT plugged in for the rest of the night and most of the this morning without any problems. It wasn't until this afternoon when I started using my laptop again that the problem arose. Could this be a delayed reaction to the RAM installation or is it just a coincidence and there's a problem with my battery?

I accidentally left it on while I was doing some chores. When I came back it was dead (no battery). So I plugged in the charger and it immediately turned bright green when its supposed to be orange first, right? MacBook says (Not Charging) but power source: power adapter, green light is on, on the Magsafe. It's running by the power source because the battery is at 0%. I've had the charger plugged in for less than/about an hour and the 0% still hasn't changed. (Not Charging) is still there too. I bought my Macbook last August 2009, so it's not even a year old.

However, today I've realised that the back of it at the bottom is getting really hot, even when the charger is not plugged in. I am not using powerful apps either.Sometimes it can almost be too hot to touch for more than a couple of seconds. This happens on any surface, whether it's on my wooden desk or not.
The back getting hot also heats up the rest of the Mac to some extent. does it need seeing to and if so will I be charged?

I have been using my MacBook pro for a lot of film editing and motion graphics. Recently, I noticed that my battery kept going down, even when charging. I thought nothing on it and kept using it. After around 4 hours, the battery went from 90% to 23% WHILE plugged in. This got me nervous. When I plug in the MagSafe charger, the light comes on and I get the "charging" symbol in my toolbar. The light turns orange and then, after a few minutes, the power starts to go down instead of up.
The laptop does charge, but only when I am running no application, when the screen is shut or when the laptop is powered off. Bear in mind that right now, I am on Firefox, that is the only application open, yet the charge is still going down. I assumed it was because I was using Premiere CS6, After Effects CS6 and Cinema4D, but now even when they are not open, the batter will not charge when I am using the laptop.
I am currently only running Firefox and Finder. Now the laptop is charging as usual. However the second I open up Premiere, After Effects etc, it goes down.

Removing the charge kills the noise and makes the sound crystal clear again. Doesn't bother me to much, but as my uni-macbook pro is plugged in most of the time I can see this near constant buzz getting on my nerves a bit in the future. Any ideas, looking back I experienced the same thing with my macbook.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIm in England currently (From the USA) and am using a "DYNEX" converter adapter to switch the electric current down so I can plug in/charge my Macbook Pro and iPad. It works, however the charger buzzes pretty loudly and gets hot. I brought two, one started smelling like melted plastic and stopped charging altogether. That particular charger has faulted at home before (back in the USA), so I'm not sure if it died because of the converter or because it's just faulty.
I have plugged in the newer charger and it also buzzes, but I'm really worried to keep it plugged in because I don't want it to fault out too. Is it normal for it to buzz like that when plugged into a converter adapter?

Does the light going off mean that the batteries will no longer draw power from the power outlet and that it is safe to assume power will continue to be consumed? After much research, I bought a replaceable battery (not through Apple, but not through a sketchy website either) in hopes it would bring my laptop to some life.
The new battery is now doing to same thing as before. Working if plugged in, automatically turning off if disconnected, and always shows that it is at 0% charge. Is there anything else I can do? I know I'm due for a new laptop, but I'd really like to keep this one around for just a few more months!

I use my MBP 15" (the new one), as my primary machine in my office. I sit by my best usually 10-12hrs a day working on it.
I am trying to figure out what is best to do, keep the AC plugged in or have it un-plugged and only plug it in when the battery is drained (or less then 50%)? I have tried different experiments, plugged in, not-plugged and time is about the same for life of the battery. The true question is, how is is best to do it for the health of the battery.
Is it better to keep the charger in after a completely charged or pull out the charger. Basically I'm wondering if the power is pulled from the UPS after the battery is completely charged or is it still constantly charging the battery.

Wondered if it's a glitch stemming from the switch from Graphics card as/when needed, or if it's an indication of something more serious and warrants taking it in to the Genius Bar... (don't want to part with it for days unnecessarily).
My screen flickers on my new UniBody Macbook. The problem occurs intermittently and seems to only appear when the computer is on battery. Should I take the computer to be replaced at a genius bar or should I wait for a possible software update. I have the 9c8c screen, so I don't want to risk getting the fairly inferior screen.

I'm running OSX 10.6.8. and have only used approximately 200GB of my 500 GB Hard drive. My mbpro simply hangs. I'll open a browser, or hot corner my spaces, save a file, whatever, and my laptop will not respond. Sometimes my cursor will still be movable but won't actually activate anything. I frequently get the BBOD and all I can do is wait until it stops and then all the cursor commands and keyboard clicks I made while it was spinning, execute...or not.I have run the Apple Hardware Test which came up negative. I've downloaded and installed ClamXAV which only came up with a couple of domain spoof type viruses which I've quarantined and deleted. I've got Little Snitch telling me what connections are going out but it seems that there's nothing unusual, but I frankly don't know that much about the processes other than what I have looked up on goole.I have looked at the Activity Monitor and every not and then, right when my machine hangs, I'll see a spike in Network Activity pane but almost seems as if the spike isn't being read because the processes that come up seem to be legitimate and often, they don't show that they've taken up all the bandwidth. Please help. I've got a G4 quicksilver from 2002 that still kicks A and my MBPro has made me nervous ever since switching to the Intel chipset. (Don't know if that actually has anytghing to do with it.) Lastly, I think there's a chance that I'm the fool who opened or executed something downloaded from the internet. It could have been a dashboard widget or an extension or add on or software or whatever.

I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro with retina display. I have had an intermittent problem with the cursor disappearing. It is extremely annoying and I haven't been able to stop it.
I reset the SMC, it worked for a while but the problem is back now.
I have a MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running Tiger 10.4.11. It has an issue where it takes a LOT of tries (10 - 20 tries) to get it to start up. When I hit the power button, it will turn on, the hard drive spins, the fans go, the usb ports work (I had a laptop cooler hooked up to it that would spin when I turned the computer power on), BUT the screen stays black, no chime. If I keep trying, by holding the power button down for 10 seconds and then hitting it again, it will usually start up on the 10th or 15th or so try.
I've tried varying amounts of time between tries, five minutes, ten minutes, overnight, etc. I haven't done any recent software or hardware updates. Once the computer starts up, it works just fine, aside from running quite hot (typically 60+ sometimes up to 80+C when I'm running photoshop or illustrator).
I have an older macbook 3,1 running Mavericks OS and recently one of my left USB ports has not been:
1) able to eject external hard drives plugged into it (I have to force eject)-instead it gives me a message that one or more programs may be using it (even though I don't have any programs using it). The hard drive is being powered by USB has a 3.0 connection although this wasn't a problem in the past... I tried the other USB port and it can eject just fine from that port.
2)Intermittent communication with mouse. Not sure if this is a hardware issue but when I try to run diagnostics on this laptop by holding down the "D" key at startup it doesn't take me to diagnostics. I no longer have the discs for this laptop (containing said hardware test) so I can't boot the diagnostics from that discs.
In lieu of a hardware test I opened CONSOLE and did a search for USB and there were a couple of these messages:

Is this a logic board issue? Would rolling my OS back to pre-Mavericks work? The problem didn't emerge right when I updated to Mavericks however I have had luck changing OS stuff (updating or rolling back) with faulty USBs...

I have a 17-inch MacBook Pro and a 27 inch Thunderbolt display. I've been using both for about 2 years now. On occasion, the display disconnects for no obvious reason. Unplugging it from my MacBook Pro and replugging it in seems to solve the problem, but its been happening more frequently lately.

It will occasionally display lines one pixel wide, but over the whole screen (it's quite difficult to describe so I've attached a photo). This happens seemingly out of the blue, probably once every few hours of normal use, and the only way I've been able to get it to go away is to close the laptop, then open it again - Sometimes it only takes a few goes for this fix to work, sometimes a a lot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy late 2008 macbook intermittently makes a gentle "ding" sound. By gentle I mean it's a sound effect, not the kind of beep you get from about to die hardware. I cannot work out at all what is causing it.
Sometimes it doesn't happen for weeks then will happen several times in a single day. It happens when I am not doing anything at all (ie. not even pressing keys).
I've checked all the sound effects that you can choose in system preferences and it's not the same sound as any of them. I don't use Mail or any other email clients but just in case I checked once when I heard the ding - and I didn't have any new mail. I've also checked my dashboard, and as far as I can see the calendar, clock, weather and calculator widgets don't seem to be set up to make some random alarm sound.
