IMac :: Can't Delete A User (admin) - Get Spinning Pin Wheel
Dec 7, 2009I migrated my macbook pro over to my imac successfully. The weird thing was, when it asked about users, i didnt have the opportunity to overwrite (or merge) the mbp user with the existing imac user. That option was greyed out and the only option was to create a NEW user.. Not the best
None the less, i created the new user from my MBP and figured i would just move a few files over from the other user that I wanted and delete the old existing user.. but i cant!!!
I made sure to give full access to all admins and moved the files with no problem.. (p.s. both accounts are admin users with full permissions)
The problem is when I go into the system preferences, and click on users and then unlock the preferences, I can click on '-' to remove the old user and it asks if i want to create a disk image, just delete it, or remove just the user and keep the home folder.. I chose to create a disk image and delete the user
This is when it gets stuck. I click continue and i get the spinning pinwheel of death.
rebooted and still the same thing.
whats going on?? I dont know how to check if the computer is just not creating the disk image and there is something wrong with that, or if there is something seriously wrong with how the users/files are linked.

Dec 29, 2009I just migrated 150GB of Data from my Time Capsule to my new iMAC. I know how to add permissions using "get info." Unlike the last time I did a migration, every document file says I don't have the permissions to access. I have about 100 doc files. Is there anyway I can do this task in automator. I looked, but I don't understand all the language. Is there another way to do this?

I used to only have one user account (user1) on my iMac, but recently I made a second one (user2) that is intended to eventually replace my original user account. (Why I did this: Photoshop CS3 was unusable with errors, and after trying every fix known to man [aside from a clean install of Leopard], the only thing that worked was to use Photoshop on a new user account ... weird, I know.)
Here is my problem: I moved all my files from /user1/ to /user2/ (e.g. - photos from /user1/Pictures/ I moved to /user2/Pictures/, and so on...). The problem is that most of these files do not have user2 listed under "Sharing and Permission" when I get information about the files (so I don't have permission to access them).
I tried this:
* Clicking on an enclosing folder and going to 'get info'
* Adding user2 and setting permissions to read & write
* Clicking the gear symbol and selecting 'apply to enclosed items...'
Didn't work; 'user2' did not get added to the user list for 'Sharing and Permissions' of the enclosed items. In the meantime, I did this:
* I noticed that every item already has the 'staff' group listed (with read only permission)
* I changed staff from 'read only' to 'read & write'
* I clicked the gear symbol and applied to enclosed items.
Now all enclosed items allow staff to read & write. This is ok for now, but I'd rather just allow 'user2' permissions when needed, instead of allowing the whole 'staff' group (whatever staff group includes... ?) Also, is there anything else I should know about transferring user accounts that I might not have thought of?

My friend and I were on the phone with tech support for 3 hours, but the only solution they gave to us was to pay for Applecare & ask them to solve the problem. Is that a "user's-permissions" problem?

If I do a target mode reboot, I can look at computer files of multiple users of 'target mode computer', when I know this is not normal. Rather than having difficult access, I am having too much access. What could be causing this? If one deletes an account (for example, the original Admin account) and answers that he would like to delete the home folder, more often than not, he is asked for the permission of an Admin account. However, if one doesn't enter the credentials and presses cancel, the account (and home folder) disappear anyway. Is this normal? Or is there data residue hiding somewhere.Â

Mar 17, 2012I'm aware of how enabling sFTP support in Lion Server by enabling SSH access in the Hardware settings.
Now, if I do log in using sFTP in Transmit client Software with a normal user account who should be able to access via SSH but got only permissions for the "Public" folder on the Server, that user via SSH/sFTP can see/access the root Directory of the server anyway!

Mar 30, 2012file permissions - how to edit a user account that is creating files with permissions that are not wanted anymore. i understand how to reset permissions on files or folders, but i do not understand how to reset the permissions a user is "creating". ie, each time this user creates a file, the file needs to be manually edited for its permissions. so i need to edit the user's settings, but i can't find where to do that. this is a home office setup. we have two users with admin privileges. our imac is acting as a server of sorts - it holds common files that need to be edited by both users. the other user is typically working on shared files from a macbook over wifi.Â

I ran disk utility - it failed because it could not locate the clip art folder in word (?wha?) repair disk permissions ran for 24 hours and couldn't complete. anyway - I know there is an easy solution here - i just want to be sure i'm doing it correctly so i dont make it worse than it already is...would some kind soul please provide me step-by-step instructions to either use Time Machine to repair - or something.
Hardware :: Scroll Wheel Won't Work On Logitech Trackmen Wheel?
Jan 16, 2010I have 2 MBP's, a Mac Pro, and a Mac Mini. On all of these I use a Logitech Trackman Wheel with. I updated the first 3 machines to Snow Leopard and the Logitech Trackman Wheel continued to work fine. I then upgraded the last MBP to Snow Leopard. For some reason the scroll wheel no longer works on the Logitech Trackman Wheel. I am able to use the ball to move around the screen, the buttons still work, but the scroll wheel won't work.

Sep 3, 2009I have tried very hard to find the answer to my transferring question, but nowhere do I find my answer nor does Apple offer free help or even help by email.
So here is my issue. I want to transfer all my personal data from my HOME user account on my MacBook to a NEW user account on the SAME MacBook. The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.
OS X :: Repair Permissions Isn't Repairing Permissions

When running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, it reports that there are errors and that it's fixed them but if I run it again, the same errors keep appearing.
I've noticed that the current permissions on the errors are lrw-rw-rw- which I assume means that they are symbolic links and not the actual files which Disk Utility is expecting. Any idea what's going on?

Nov 18, 2009I changed my trusty Powerbook for a newer MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel with 2GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM (that's what it says) running 10.5.8, so I could run CS4 Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc etc. I just cannot work with it! Everytime I try to do anything, I have to wait while the wheel of death decides to show me a menu, scroll up the page, select and delete an item, etc. etc. you get the picture. Quark and Illustrator seem to run perfectly ok.

Apr 17, 2012My computer stopped charging and turning on a short while after it was dropped.Â
I bought a new charger and my dad managed to fix it. (after i was told by a tech expert at a dodgy asian store the main processer had to be replaced)  The only issue im having are. The spinny wheel apears in almost all tasks, internet , browsing flies , clicking top tab.Â
It only appears for about 30 seconds then goes away, sometimes freezing completely, It seems to happen less when the computer is stationary but still will happen quite often even just typing text. Logic Pro after reinstalling refuses to Open. Music sometimes freezes skips for 5-10 seconds.Â
I did some research and try a few things its not the CPU usage cause i been checking using that program that checks. Is there a way i can check what part is failing through software or maybe do a general clean up? since it was reformated.Â
Do i need to get a new computer or just a replacement part if i eliminate all other issues? Or could it be the start up drive? Â
