OS X :: Using Automator To Add User Permissions?

Dec 29, 2009

I just migrated 150GB of Data from my Time Capsule to my new iMAC. I know how to add permissions using "get info." Unlike the last time I did a migration, every document file says I don't have the permissions to access. I have about 100 doc files. Is there anyway I can do this task in automator. I looked, but I don't understand all the language. Is there another way to do this?

OS X :: New User - Getting File Permissions

Jun 7, 2010

Computer: iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
System: OS X 10.5.8

I used to only have one user account (user1) on my iMac, but recently I made a second one (user2) that is intended to eventually replace my original user account. (Why I did this: Photoshop CS3 was unusable with errors, and after trying every fix known to man [aside from a clean install of Leopard], the only thing that worked was to use Photoshop on a new user account ... weird, I know.)

Here is my problem: I moved all my files from /user1/ to /user2/ (e.g. - photos from /user1/Pictures/ I moved to /user2/Pictures/, and so on...). The problem is that most of these files do not have user2 listed under "Sharing and Permission" when I get information about the files (so I don't have permission to access them).

I tried this:
* Clicking on an enclosing folder and going to 'get info'
* Adding user2 and setting permissions to read & write
* Clicking the gear symbol and selecting 'apply to enclosed items...'

Didn't work; 'user2' did not get added to the user list for 'Sharing and Permissions' of the enclosed items. In the meantime, I did this:
* I noticed that every item already has the 'staff' group listed (with read only permission)
* I changed staff from 'read only' to 'read & write'
* I clicked the gear symbol and applied to enclosed items.

Now all enclosed items allow staff to read & write. This is ok for now, but I'd rather just allow 'user2' permissions when needed, instead of allowing the whole 'staff' group (whatever staff group includes... ?) Also, is there anything else I should know about transferring user accounts that I might not have thought of?

Hardware :: LexMark Printer And User Permissions

Mar 2, 2009

I got a new LexMark printer for my Mac, which is not remembering the settings I made for it after my computer is restarted. My friend and I were on the phone with tech support for 3 hours, but the only solution they gave to us was to pay for Applecare & ask them to solve the problem. Is that a "user's-permissions" problem?

Software :: OS X User Permissions - Accounts Not Separated

Jan 15, 2010

In contrast to post below, it appears that the 'walls' separating user accounts are no longer working. If I do a target mode reboot, I can look at computer files of multiple users of 'target mode computer', when I know this is not normal. Rather than having difficult access, I am having too much access. What could be causing this? (Computers were all recently reinstalled with original computer disk, and should not have had any problems.). Referring article: [URL]

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: SW User Account Permissions?

Apr 13, 2012

I've noticed a quirk in SW. If one deletes an account (for example, the original Admin account) and answers that he would like to delete the home folder, more often than not, he is asked for the permission of an Admin account. However, if one doesn't enter the credentials and presses cancel, the account (and home folder) disappear anyway. Is this normal? Or is there data residue hiding somewhere.

Now, if I do log in using sFTP in Transmit client Software with a normal user account who should be able to access via SSH but got only permissions for the "Public" folder on the Server, that user via SSH/sFTP can see/access the root Directory of the server anyway!

how to set specific folder permissions to users using the enabled SSH/sFTP option?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: File Permissions - Edit A User Account?

Mar 30, 2012

file permissions - how to edit a user account that is creating files with permissions that are not wanted anymore. i understand how to reset permissions on files or folders, but i do not understand how to reset the permissions a user is "creating". ie, each time this user creates a file, the file needs to be manually edited for its permissions. so i need to edit the user's settings, but i can't find where to do that. this is a home office setup. we have two users with admin privileges. our imac is acting as a server of sorts - it holds common files that need to be edited by both users. the other user is typically working on shared files from a macbook over wifi.

OS X :: Repair Permissions Isn't Repairing Permissions

Using OS X 10.5.6

When running Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, it reports that there are errors and that it's fixed them but if I run it again, the same errors keep appearing.

I've noticed that the current permissions on the errors are lrw-rw-rw- which I assume means that they are symbolic links and not the actual files which Disk Utility is expecting. Any idea what's going on?

Applications :: Transfer Personal Data From Home User To New User On Same MacBook?

Sep 3, 2009

I have tried very hard to find the answer to my transferring question, but nowhere do I find my answer nor does Apple offer free help or even help by email.

So here is my issue. I want to transfer all my personal data from my HOME user account on my MacBook to a NEW user account on the SAME MacBook. The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.

OS X Mavericks :: Delete Second User That Migration Assistant Has Made Into Primary User?

Jun 28, 2014

Just got a new MacBook Pro, wanted to transfer my data from the old (2010) MBP. I've done this dozens of times before, but always manually, via Finder copies from external hard disks, etc. This time I decided to try the Official Method, using Migration Assistant. After numerous tries, I couldn't get Migration Assistant to work between the two MacBook Pros (both running 10.9.3), even with Apple's assistance. So I decided to try it with a MacBook running 10.6.8. It worked (though poorly; Migration Assistance needs some serious repair), which was useful (now I know that Migration Assistant works, and it's not a problem with the cabling I was using, but something in the old MBP).  But now I have two user accounts on my new MacBook Pro, which I don't want, plus the added account has now been made the primary account, with (some) data from the previously primary account moved to it.

So I want to delete the new, added, now primary user and return the MBP to its former, pristine state. So I have to go through all the data (fortunately there isn't much; both the new MBP and the MacBook were only recently set up) that's been moved from the original account to the added account, move it back to the original account, then delete the added account (if I can). This was somewhat complicated by the fact that the ~/Library folder is now invisible by default, but I figured that out. However, what I'm wondering now is, when the second, added account was made the primary account, did it assume all attributes of the former primary account, including its number? I know that user accounts in Mac OS have numbers, like 501, 502, etc.

How can I see the numbers of these two accounts? And if the added account is now number 501, when I delete it, how I can I restore the number 501 to the original account? Or perhaps I should just return the new MBP to its factory state, and start over? But I can't, since it didn't come with any Install DVDs (nor indeed, with an optical drive). (I've been out of touch with the Mac world for several years due to illness, am only now learning about the changes since 10.6, which I'd been using until less than a week ago.) I can wipe the MacBook Pro and reinstall 10.9.3, but that might lose some information specific to this computer that came with it.
