I have a late 2009 macbook pro unibody 15", I recently upgraded to the Intel SSD and just bought one of those optibays, I did not install or setup the SSD, someone else did. I am looking to use my old 500GB hitachi 5400rpm HD in the Optical drive slot, do I have to set the pins to slave since my SSD is master? What do I do when I get into mac osx? I want to erase everything and use it as a storage.
View 5 RepliesI just purchased a new Samsung HM640JI hard drive to replace my old 250gb fujitsu hd. The problem is, if I put the new samsung hdd inside and try to do a clean install of snow leopard, the setup always hangs at "extracting essentials" and I have to keep the shutdown button pressed to close my laptop. I thought I have a ram problem or that my dvd is busted but that's not the case because I inserted the samsung hdd in an enclosure, connected it via usb and the install went just fine. After the setup was over I rebooted a couple of times (still in usb enclosure) and everything was fine but after I inserted it in my mac everything went to hell: excruciating slow boot and runtime. I have an (Early 2008) Mac Pro in standard configuration. The hard drive is just about full and would like to add a second internal hard drive.
I have read that some people choose to keep just the OS on one hard drive and everything else on the drive. Is this the best way to go? Which hard drive would the applications go on (with the OS?)?
The main use of this machine is for graphics (Adobe CS3 and Aperture).
I am thinking of doing this:
Tray 1: SSD boot/apps
Tray 2: 1TB storage drive
External 1 FW800: 1TB storage drive
And then mirroring the TB drives with a OS X software Raid 1.
But, if one drive crashes, is the other drive instantly usable? How do you separate or recover the "mirrored" drive in a Raid 1?
Also, can you do a Raid 1 with a drive on an SATA, and then a FW800 with such different transfer speeds, will the FW800 drive be able to write as fast as the SATA one, or will the SATA one have to slow down?
What is the best way to have an internal drive in the Mac Pro, and then have it real-time mirrored on an external? Or is this not possible.
I have just started using a G3 B/W Yosemite tower to replace my totally satisfactory Mini Tower on 9.2.2 - forced by IE not working any more.
I had to buy it a MODEM, a genuine Apple internal MODEM in a aluminium box with ribbon cable. I have installed it and it seems to know its there and makes dialling noises - but doesn't actually grab the line first . I need it to dial the phone and for Internet backup, I have broadband Internet connection via an ethernet LAN and router.
I tried using a Teleadapt RJ11 adapter which swops inner pair to outer pair, no luck. I have checked the line with a phone to be sure there is a dial tone, and left the phone off hook while activating the MODEM to check if anything happens, it just runs a continuous dial tone, but the computer is not finding a dial tone. Is there something I don't know to do? Is the RJ11 connection deviant? Or did I get sold a duff MODEM?
I recently installed XP with bootcamp on my MacBook Pro. The big problem I'm having is that the internal speakers on my computer don't have sound coming out of them. (When I'm on windows) The volume control on my keyboard doesn't do anything, either. When I go to find my sound control, to make sure it's not muted or anything, I find that I can't even edit the sound controls. It says I don't have a device that can output sound, even though my internal speakers work fine on my mac desktop. It can't seem to find my internal speakers, when I try setting up a new device. I'm having a lot of trouble setting up internet on the XP as well, I just don't understand how to do it. (I've used mac all my life, I am really new to windows.) Basically, I have a wireless internet connection, I've got the router downstairs, and the information is handy. But I just don't know how to set it up, and I don't know what type of internet connection I want.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right. What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.

I recently bought an express card ssd for my late 2008 Macbook Pro. I use the ssd to boot lion osx, and to boost the performance of apps like photoshop. Do to limited capacity (48gb) I need to leave some apps on the hdd. Is there a way to link to the hdd? p.s.I want the icons of the apps to show on the ssd desktop, but be stored on the hdd. Also, I found this link [url], and I had some complications with inputting the commands in terminal; the app was removed from the ssd, but did not point to the folder on the hdd.

Have looked at my iPad2 and my Macbook Pro mid 2012 as to what settings are involved to set up a VPN.I don't know which options I need to choose to do it right and therefore have not done anything yet. How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

My following problem deals with both MAC and PC. I know this is a MAC forum but I posted here a long time ago and recieved great results.
I've been researching my problem for the past two days and I have given up. I dropped my MacBook and it fails to work. I took the internal HD out in hopes of retrieving the content. I currently have the HD hooked up to a windows PC and my PC recognizes this. After researching why I could not view the contents of the MAC drive with current programs that allow me to do so, I found out the drive turned RAW. After over 10+ programs of trying to find a program that will allow me to explore the RAW MAC HD on my PC, I found 1 program, but I had to buy it in order to extract the files, it was a 200 dollar program, something I will not buy.
My question is, is there a better way of extracting the content of my MAC drive on my PC? I understand I'm using a PC and part of my problem pertains to one but that is all I have. Any recommendations on retrieving my content through certain programs would be great. Even programs that will allow me to at least retrieve my pictures.
I just recently had bought a new Seagate 500gb 7200 HD. I have it already installed in the enclosure and hooked up to my computer via firewire 800 and already have Carbon Copy Cloner installed and working as well. When I go to use CCC the drive doesn't show up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedFinally home for Xmas since (remotely) buying my mother a Macbook 6.1 over Easter. I've set her up with a few utilites (Click to flash, VLC player, Coconut battery), but Im unable to get 64bit kernel to work (as it does on my 6.2 MBP).
The MB appears to meet all the criteria (64bit EFI, right processor, SL) - but neither the apple sudo terminal command, nor the 6+4 key at boot work in setting 64bit kernel. Any other suggestions?
I want 64bit because it provides improved security (NX bit in HW, less chance of exploits due to smaller market share)
I just purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace my iMAC. The iMAC backs up to Time Machine. Is using the Time Machine backup easy to setup the new Macbook?? The thought of having to install all my apps and migrate all my data sounds overwhelming and I'm hoping Time Machine makes this painless?
