OS X :: New MacBook Pro Time Machine Setup
Aug 4, 2009
I just purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace my iMAC. The iMAC backs up to Time Machine. Is using the Time Machine backup easy to setup the new Macbook?? The thought of having to install all my apps and migrate all my data sounds overwhelming and I'm hoping Time Machine makes this painless?

So I've ordered my new 13" Macbook Air (2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash) and I'm wondering the best way to transfer data from my 13" MBP? Which would be the best : Mac-To-Mac migration (via ethernet with the attached adapter) or Restore from Time Machine? I'm worried about compatibility issues with restoring from time machine, or migration all together, and was contemplating setting it up as a brand new machine, but that would be extremely time consuming. Also because I have iLife '09 on my MBP will that replace iLife '11 on my MBA?

Ever since I updated to 10.6.1 I've had the following problems:
- Time Machine does not work at all with my Time Capsule. When it attempts to back up my data, Time Machine gets hung up with a status of "Making backup disk available..." and the icon in the menu bar just spins forever (the status appears in the menu bar icon's menu). I also cannot enter Time Machine; it gets hung trying to connect to the Time Capsule and I have to cancel it. Finder then takes up 100% CPU and I have to power down by holding in the power button (shutting down from the Apple menu doesn't work).
- I store my iTunes library in a folder called Music under the Data folder on the Time Capsule. When I open iTunes, it prompts me to choose my iTunes library. When I do, it starts to load the list of albums, then iTunes locks up and I must force quit it. This also causes my machine to not be able to shut down or restart from the Apple menu.
Oddly enough I can still access the Data folder from Finder with no issues. I just wanted to put this out there in case other people are having similar problems. It's pretty frustrating as all this worked fine before the 10.6.1 update.

I've just got my iMac so for me it was important to get TM up and running before I start doing some real work (and hard play!).
I want to share the lessons learned from my experience and from others in this forum in the hope that it will help others.
I am using a NS4300N NAS from Promise on a LAN with an iMac running Leopard 10.5.2. I connect to it using SMB. It should work with any NAS since the instructions here are not NAS specific. I haven't tried with AFP.

I have regularly been using TM with my Leopard. I just wiped my MBP clean and installed Snow Leopard. I have done a manual restore of all the files I need. My question is, can I use the old TM hard drive as the new TM backup drive, without losing the old backups? In other words, if I plug in the old TM drive and designate it as a backup disk, would my old backups be removed?

I have two questions. Firstly, I am considering buying a western digital MyBook Studio Edition II [URL]. If I use time machine with this drive, will I be able to remove one of the drives and keep it off-site for safekeeping and have time machine continue to backup on the remaining one as usual? Secondly, if I remove drive #2 and keep it off site, would dropping it back into the raid setup update drive #2 with drive #1's current time machine backup? I'm new to raid, and I am basically trying to have a time machine backup, and a off site backup.

So if my current setup on my Mac Pro is (2) 1 TB drives.
(1) for use, and (1) for Time Machine.
Can I connect a 1 TB Time Capsule to essentially "back up my Time Machine back up"?
So I want to have (3) 1 TB HDD's, (2) in the Mac Pro, and (1) in the Time Capsule, all with the same information. I basically need to know if the software is set up for a 1X's backup only, or can it copy the same information again as a redundant backup?

If I open Time Machine app I get the message 'your time machine backup disk can't be found'. When I click on the 'setup time machine' option the window closes and nothing happens.

I have a 2009 imac with snow leopard. I want to set up my time machine with an external USB or Firewire hard drive, but I'm not sure which would be better or less costly. Need some advice on which brands would be best. I have a My Book on USB right now, but as it's configured for both Mac and Windows files (I use Parallels) I cannot use it for Time Machine. Also, I've been reading that rebooting through Time Machine could take a long time, but if i could partition the new drive and make some of it a reboot disk alone, that would be faster. I don't know how to do that, or which external drive to get that would work best for that arrangement.

I really love Time machine and I'm using it on my internal drive. I know it not the best way to secure data. That why I'm planning to buy external hard drive. I read time machine and backup data on network drive, running leopard.
I'm wondering is there any way to setup time machine to backup my data on network hard drive running Windows XP. I use my macbook with my windows desktop PC for internet and sharing file. It would be great if time machine can backup data on my windows desktop network hard drive.

How do you set up, step by step, Time Machine? I want to create a partition on my external HDD (40GB in size, 120GB capacity) and have it back up to that partition. Is it possible? I only use around <30GB so I figure 10GB extra space is more than enough.

I have a Windows LAN to connect to a USB backup drive. I cannot find out how to set up Time Machine to connect to the USB backup drive. Does Time Machine only work with Airport devices? If not, then how do I set up Time Machine to see my USB drive on the network?

I just got my new iMac 21.5, works great. I'm a Mac newbie. I have a remote Windows machine I'd like to use as a network drive. I also have a NAS (Netgear SC101T) which I basically don't use anymore, thus I'll use the PC. I have two wireless routers so that function is of no value to me. So IMHO I don't need a Time Capsule.
I'd like to configure Time Machine to use the Windows networked drive as the "Time Capsule". Is this possible? If so, how do I do that? And how does that impact the Restore functionality if I'm not using the $300+ Time Capsule? Will it still restore a dead machine if it comes down to it?

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

I cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.

Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.

I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

My MacBook Pro locks up and shows the message "Please reboot your computer by holding down the power button" every time that Time Machine tries to run a backup. I turned off Time Machine and no more crashes... Sorta makes my 500 Gig Time Capsule useless.

at my work we have a Xerox WorkCentre 7232 with a phone line connected to it and an ethernet cable connected to it. You can print anything over the network so I know foresure that its connected to the network, and you can send faxes manually from it so I know the faxes are working. Now what I would like to do is make it so all the computers which are all mac's (10.4 or 10.5) in my office send faxes right from their computers by connecting to the xerox workcentre 7232. So if some one would like to send a fax instead of walking over to the machine they could just click on the pdf or word doc and tell it to be faxed from their computer. I tried to set it up with no luck, even call xerox for help but they wanted to send a tec over. So can someone assist me on how to set this all up? I'm I missing part of the puzzle and need some software?

I just set up the Mail app but dislike that even after I quit the app if I click it again to reopen it it doesn't require me to re-enter my password. This means even if I close/quit it and walk away from my laptop anyone who uses it can just click Mail and they have complete access to my Gmail account.
I went into preferences but could not find where or how to require it to ask for my password after it's been closed. If there isn't an option then I will go back to copying an address when on a website then opening gmail and pasting it and emailing. Obviously using the Mail app would be more convenient for those types of emails but if it means my account is always open and available for anyone to read then I will go back to the longer method.

I am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right. What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.

Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to recover the contents of a failed MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) from a Time Machine backup to a new MacBook Air (10.7.4). Using the same external disk for backups, I now have a folder for both the old and new machines in
/Volumes/time_machine/Backups.backupdb/
The instructions here
[URL]
explain how to reconnect time machine to the old machine's backups. Once I've done this and checked that I can access the old backups, can I simply delete the new machine folder to save space?
