MacBook Pro :: Upgraded RAM 2010 Boot Good But Won't Wake Up
May 27, 2012
I orderd 8 gig's of RAM from Apple. Installed it per the instructions. Now, the MBP with Lion boots up and runs fine from off, the activity monitor acknowledges the 8 gig's. Runs well.
When I close it and then open it back up, the screen stays black and the sleep light goes out. Also, sometimes it won't boot, the light blinks and it makes a beeping noise over and over until I do a hard shutdown. Also, a couple of times, I was using it and the graphics went totally screwy and were blinking and whatnot until I did a hard shut down. Can I return the memory (a shame because it is better with it when it works). My laptop is a new to me MBP everthing seems to be working great but I noticed it will not wake up after sleeping for more than 5 mins or so. I can hear a faint fan noise but the screen does not come on and no tap, click or swipe will wake it up. I've got to hold down the power button and wait awhile to get back up and running. I can provide more info, I'd say I'm half literate when it comes to computers.

I've lived with this as long as I care to live with this. My 17" MacBook Pro will not wake from sleep. Space key, mouse click, closing lid and re-opening, disconnecting power and reconnecting -- nothing works. When the display goes to sleep I have no alternative but to force a reboot with the power button. I can't see how this can be good for my hard drives. But to set the machine to never sleep will likely damage the display.Â
I believe my firmware is up to date. I'm running OS 10.6.8. I recently reinstalled system software and updated everything but the problem persists.Â
Here is my system info:Â I await your collective wisdom to flow over me.

I just purchased a set of Mushkin Apple 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz SODIMM 9-9-9-24 (976647A) RAM for my mid 2011 27" iMac and everything ran great for a few days. I was able to sleep and wake the machine with no problems. Last night I was doing some graphic intensive work on my machine and when I had finished, the fans were still running high but I was going to bed so I put the machine to sleep. Normally the fans would stop at this point but they kept running. I assumed the machine was still hot so it was just cooling after sleeping. The next morning the machine would not wake. I had to do a hard reset to get it to boot up again I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM but it still doesn't wake from sleep. Am I have issues with my RAM?

Since I use my machine a lot for photo work, this new feature on the refresh was nice. Question is does anyone know if it's easy to swap the card reader out of the 2009's for the new SDHC reader?

I upgraded the RAM in my Macbook (late 2007) and the computer won't boot. I have power but no video display. I put the old RAM back in and it worked fine. I was careful to order the correct RAM: DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHz. Is it possible the memory is bad?

My mid 2010 iMac i7 will not boot past the apple logo? I'm running 10.7.3. I have tried restoring from TM backup from recovery mode (worked the last time this happened) however upon completion it returns to the recovery screen? I made a disk of Lion when I downloaded the first time (followed same instructions sourced from numerous websites) which does not seem to work when i set to start up from this disk, just gets to the grey screen and flicks between the apple logo, a folder icon with a question mark and the circle with line through? Now I can't eject the disk either, a message appears that system can't eject and to make sure all applications are closed? Not sure how to go about closing these applications without being able to start the system? When I tried booting from the Macintosh HD I got a message that the boot cache partition was faulty? I have ran disk permissions etc all ok. Â

My MacBook had the trackpad clicks-not-registering problem that was cleared up by the Trackpad Firmware Update in November. Unfortunately, a variant of that problem seems to have surfaced. When waking from sleep or on boot, roughly half of the trackpad's clicks won't register, forcing me to click two or more times to start an app or read mail. After five or ten minutes, the problem seems to abate. I still "lose" clicks now and then, but not as often. Note that other trackpad functions seem unaffected when this happens.
I've tried resetting the SMC (no effect) and PRAM. Resetting PRAM cleared up the problem but only briefly, and now it's recurring.
I took the MacBook to the Genius Bar and the Genius suggested I use "tap to click" instead, but while that works, I'm a sloppy clicker and found that setting irritating.

Most likely i need to chaneg a new HHD?? I tried to search on apple website how much is the HHD but cant find any info. Is there one had same problem and got their HHD changed? Should I fix it thru apple or should i get the HHD myself and find someone to put it in for me? I am out of warranty.

I installed the latest version of Lion on my mid-2009 13" MBP yesterday. I recently got a Corsair 256GB SSD (model CMFSSD-256D1) and that's what I installed Lion onto. It seems this behaviour has only been happening since I got this SSD. What happens is when I put my computer to sleep for a long period (say, 2 or more hours), when I wake it up, some of my applications show the spinning beachball - though some of the applications still seem to respond. After playing around with the responsive applications for a bit, they eventually start beachballing as well. After a minute or two the entire system is beachballed and I can't do anything. My only option is to do a hard shutdown. (It almost seems like the SSD has decided not to respond to requests?)Â
When this happens and I do the hard shutdown, I consistently cannot boot my MBP at this point. I shut it off again, wait a bit, turn it on, and try booting again - nothing. The screen is all white (maybe light gray), and the animated gear never appears. I do hear the boot sound. When my MBP is in this state, none of the special boot options work - e.g., holding down "shift" for Safe Mode, holding down "option" to choose another boot drive, holding down "command+R" to boot from the recovery partition - it's as if I hadn't held those keys down at all. The only keys that do work are "option+command+P+R", which resets the NVRAM. After I've resetted the NVRAM, it still doesn't boot right away. I turn it off again, turn it on, and finally my MBP boots totally fast and fine. I do a check of the disk and there are zero disk/permission errors.Â
This is totally reproducible behaviour. Every time it's in sleep mode for a few hours, it does this, and I can't boot, and the only way I can boot is by following those steps above.Â
If I put the MBP in sleep mode for just a couple minutes to test it, it comes back from the sleep fine. I'm not sure how long it has to be in sleep mode before it decides to beachball on wake.Â
I have done a search for new firmware for my SSD and have come up with nothing.

I recently purchased the 13'' mbp (well my parents bought it for me because i was qualified for commercial pilot training in my country) and well besides the rough edges that hurt your wrists, I love my macbook pro, I love the interface, I love the design + the holy track pad (!) but as soon as I install boot camp things turned ugly, real uglyAfter struggling to install Windows 7 Home Premimum 64 bit's Drivers (It took me a long time to set windows to regconize that I need 64 bit drivers and not 32's) I grow more and more frustrated with the supplied drivers, it's horrible, the windows would frequently freeze and requires a shutdown. (I presume there's a problem with the NVDIA 320M driver). Another problem is that for some odd reason there's no fan running at all during windows operation! And yes I'm aware of the smrcfan restart thingy to transfer the setting over to windows but that is just so incovenient (sorry if i'm being a wuss).
Now I would love to hear feedback from experienced users how on earth can I find a subsitute graphics driver to fix this frequent freezing + a way to start the fans.

my Macbook Pro doesn't boot after updating the EFI, I just updated and restarted as it says in the description of the update and then it does not boot, making 4 short beeps and then 4 longer, I don't know what's happening. There was no problem during the update (no problem with electricity or similar)

It seems to stuck in Clamshell mode? External Display, Keyboard, Power -> MBP working!
But without it's just sleeping. Internal display isn't detected then. Have installied 10.7.3 Lion + All EFI Upgrades.
Zapping PRAM and SMC had no effect. Also deleting the power management prefs using single user mode had no effect. I am able to wake it up for short without external display - but 5-10 secs later it is sleeping again.Â

The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.

I've got my MSDN W7x64 Ultimate DVD burned, and when I reboot to install it (after using Boot Camp Assistant) it always hangs and never brings up the graphical installation screen. I tried Safe Mode, only to see that it stops after disk.sys loads. Anyone else having this issue or found a way to fix it?

Mac Pro
Early 2008
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
This is the first time I've encountered this. Upon cold booting the machine it went directly to the legacy Mac OS X Server login screen from before the upgrade to Mavericks. It would not let me login with current credentials. I had no choice but to hard power off. It returned to normal operation on restart.
It could be a possible bug.

I am currently running a 15" Powerbook G4 1.67, 1GB ram, latest update for 10.5.
Yesterday my computer randomly went to sleep and wouldn't wake up. I forced it to shut down and then tried rebooting it. It started up, but went to sleep before even getting to the login screen. I have searched the internet, this website, and the apple support site to try and fix the problem.
I have tried resetting the PMU (although I don't know if I did that correctly), leaving it to rest without any battery or AC power hooked up to it, and the CMD + ALT + P + R reset all to no avail.
It seems like the general outcome for random sleep problems hasn't been too good,

Anyone else had trouble option booting with a 2010 Mac Pro? Can't get to startup manager. All I get is a blank screen. Apple says it must be a hardware problem after having me test everything else. Keyboard checks out. Can boot from install disk holding C key, but cannot change startup disk with prefs to install dvd or to a cloned drive. Have reinstalled SL 10.6.4 from install disk. Zapped pram and unplugged power, held power button 5-10 secs. and plugged in again - to reset computer according to apple tech.

There were many reports of not being able to install any Windows OS using bootcamp with latest MBP 13" (2010, nVidia 320M) and Intel X-25M SSD combination (installer just wouldn't recognize the drive at all).I haven't heard about this problem for a while. But I'm still not sure about whether it's safe to go with X-25M or not.

I have an iPad 32GB WiFi and a MacBook Pro as well so I was trying very hard to justify myself in getting an 11" MBA but ending up talking myself out of it. The 13" MBP is perfect for my uses. It's already lightweight and portable as it is. After playing with the 11" in the Apple store, I was impressed on how light it was. This no doubt blows away any netbook or any notebook in it's weight class in terms of size and performance. However, the MBP's battery life, hard drive space, and processing power OUTWEIGHS the reasons of dumping my 13" MBP for the Air. Also, I have it hooked up to a 21.5 Inch HP monitor at home and it's good enough to use as a main computer at home, and light enough to take on the road.
If I needed to lookup something quickly in bed or around the house, that's where the iPad comes in. If I needed to send a quick e-mail, my HTC Evo is already great at doing that. If I didn't have a 13" MBP or even the iPad, I would have most likely went ahead and purchased the MBA. Just now at this point, spending another $1000+ or getting rid of my MBP doesn't make much sense... yet.

I've been lurking MacRumors ever since 'the wait for Arrandale' began and finally decided to sign up now so I could post this thread. I've been a Windows user for a long time now and I have a Win7 rig at home. However, I'll be going to uni later this year so I need a good portable notebook that's suitable for the common mailing 'n surfing, but also for doing some programming in Eclipse (Java) and PHP work etc. I still have my Win7 box at home for gaming and things that require larger screensize, but for the notebook... I feel really attracted to OSX with a MBP.
It will be my first Mac, but my desktop dualboots with OSX and I love it. So that's why I have decided that my school notebook will be a Mac. This is why I have been closely watching the rumors for the new MBPs and ofcourse I was pretty disappointed when I saw that the 13" model still had a C2D cpu... It's not that I need a beefed up CPU in my notebook (... I have a 3.6 GHz quad at home ), but it feels 'wrong' to buy a MBP 13": even the 2009 MacBook has a C2D, so what will the MB 2010 update bring? Is it really worth the extra money? Anyone with a similar situation?
