MacBook Pro :: SuperDrive Tearing Up CDs/DVDs?
Jul 18, 2009Does anyone else have this problem? All the DVDs I put into the Super Drive have the edges torn up (i.e. they become jagged).

View 3 RepliesI own a macbook pro, mid 2009 and its superdrive was working fine till 3 days ago. Now, whenever I try to insert a CD or DVD, the drive doesn't read it at all and after 2'' it ejects it. I tried reseting SMC and PRAM with no luck. I also tried that "batmac" trick [hold the mac upside down] with no luck either except my neck is now damaged too..
So, two questions:
1)What could the damage be? It's not a lens thing since it doesn't even try to read the cddvd.
2)My warranty is no longer valid [expired 1 month ago..]. How much would it cost to replace it? I live in Greece and no Apple Store exists here yet. I must take it to my provider [authorized reseller], check it [don't know how much this is going to cost either] and have it replaced.
I have a Macbook 10.6. I can't get my CDs or DVDs to go into the superdrive slot. I've used several disks and none of them works. It also won't allow me to get the latest super drive updates. What should I do?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Macbook Pro is approaching its second birthday and now refuses to accept any DVDs, it takes them, swirls them around making a funny noise for a few seconds and then spits the disc back out. I want update to Snow Leopard, but can't, I want to install Windows 7, but can't and more importantly can't even run FM2010! I can't see how Apple can justify charging so much and have the nerve to call the drive 'super', when it is clearly not. Reading across the net on forums this seems to be a common problem and one that Apple don't want to know. Can anyone recommend an external DVD drive to buy?

I have a G5 PowerMac and it has a SuperDrive. I can still watch DVDs but I cannot burn them. When I put in a blank it just spits them out. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but my iDVD is not compatable with the version of OSX I am running. I can't even burn music onto a DVD from itunes. CDs work fine though.
View 6 Replies View RelatedEver since I updated my '10 Mac Pro to Lion (months ago), my original built in superdrive will not read any DVD's or CD's, commercial or not, that have data on them... It simply assumes the disk is blank when it clearly isn't. Now, if I insert a blank DVD and burn it, it works like a charm... but it will then NOT read the disk that it just burned??? How and why did Lion break my superdrive?

I've rented 3 dvds from Netflix and tried to watch them in my MBP, thinking there was a problem with the dvd, but they all have the same issues. The video will suddenly freeze but the audio keeps going. The only way I can get out of this frozen screen is to use the remote that came w/ my MBP to eject the dvd. Also, the dvd menus are no longer functional. I can only press play but I can not navigate the menus with my remote, or with the mouse (the mouse cursor disappears now when I put a dvd in the drive). When I press play, it will play for about 10 minutes and then freeze. It seems like each time it's freezing about halfway into a track/chapter. I can eject the dvd, go back to the beginning, skip forward to the next track, and rewind to just after the point where it freezes, but I have to do this with EVERY track/chapter.
And I have to eject it every time or it won't play at all. This is a dvd-burning Superdrive. I have no idea how I would go about replacing the drive if it's broken, as it's built into the laptop with no way that I can see to access it. The laptop is just barely out of warranty. Here's another Mac oddity: when I log into Apple's own forums, the option to post a new thread in any of their forums is gone. It's not at the top of the page where it used to be, nor is it anywhere on any of the pages that I've visited. I'm talking about when I go to the main discussions page, and then click on the link for Macbook Pro or iPod, there's nothing there for posting.
Nothing appears on the desktop, and the DVD doesn't play (this is the second DVD I've tried). The drive works to download software though. These are commercial DVDs from Lovefilm in the UK - there are bound to be some scratches - does this mean I can only play new DVDs?
Also, if I click Finder to eject the DVD, the command is light gray, meaning the IMAC has not actually registered that there's a DVD in the drive, so I have to log off and on again for the DVD icon to appear on the desktop, at which point I can eject it. However, if I click it, it doesn't play. I'd really like to play films if I can.
I don't know what operating system I have, except that it's MAC OS X. I only just got it new two days ago.

I'm having some weird screen tearing when I scroll via the trackpad (two fingers). It does not occur if I scroll with the up/down arrows. This occurs in all windows, including safari, mail, itunes, any windows that scroll.
I've been patiently waiting for a SU to fix the problem assuming that it is something that everyone is experiencing, but I finally decided to start looking around for a fix and am not seeing a lot of info about the problem.
View 33 Replies View RelatedMy MB started doing this really strange thing where the screen gets all weird and distorted when scrolling. There are photos to show what's going on.
I have 4GB of OWC memory installed, but this was happening before I installed that so I can kind of rule that out.
Has anyone else had this happen, or know what causes it. I've tried all of the usual fixes like a fresh Leopard install and combo updates.
Sometimes, while watching a streaming video on my Macbook, the audio begins stuttering and tearing (that's the best way I think to describe it). Pausing and refreshing the tab is useless, and, usually, closing and reopening the browser is equally useless. This problem is not limited to just one steaming site -- issues occur on Youtube, Hulu, Megavideo etc... For about ten minutes (though sometimes longer), the audio across all programs on my Macbook does not work properly until the problem mysteriously solves itself.
View 7 Replies View RelatedBeen searching online for an easy way to copy DVDs to the hard drive so they can be watched without the external DVD player needed for the MacBook Air.I've converted the DVD to a .DMG file using the disk utility tool and then mounted it...but cant figure out how to make it actually execute inside of QuickTime...
My iMac suffers from some screen tearing during normal use, for example, YouTube videos. I also get some screen tearing when playing the Sims 3. However, it handles and plays large and HD video through iTunes and QuickTime fine.
I recently bought a 2010 Quad Core Mac Pro and Im experiencing some serious screen tearing with games like FFXIV. Im not sure if this has to do with my monitors refresh rate (8MS) or my graphics card (ATI5870). If you check my other threads youll notice that Ive already been having graphic card issues. Im running the game with Windows 7 64 bit through Boot camp and have all the latest ATI drivers.
I was thinking, for the next generation MacBook Air, would you want a slightly thicker (thickest part is 0.9in, tinnest is ~0.35in) laptop with a built in Superdrive, more ports, etc, or would you perfer that Apple moves away from this with a thinner computer (0.1in thinnest, 0.6in thickest), but with same limited ports.
I would actually perfer thicker with a superdrive, since I want an air but I want it to be like a MacBook but thinner. What do you think? Btw, this is assuming the regular MacBook does not change in size, since that would sway peoples opinions.
Just got a brand new uMBP (mid 2009); came with 10.6.2; migrated all my stuff from a backup of my old computer (which was running 10.5). Every program seems to run great, except that I cannot get Mactheripper (or Ripit) to rip any DVD. (My old Mid-2008 MBP, running 10.5 had no issues.) MTR opens, seems to do a rip in a very small amount of time, say 3 min when it should take 30, but says bad sectors, all that. I "reinstalled libraries," and it still failed. FWIW, Ripit fails with the burn after a few seconds. This is on more than one disc, for both MTR and Ripit, which tells me this might be about my system. The Superdrive plays DVDs fine, btw. Is there a pref file I need to trash, or something like that which might "reset" something to allow my drive to rip anything? Is this an issue with Snow Leopard? Something else in the system?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a late 2011 MacBook Pro that fails to mount any optical disk inserted into the SuperDrive. All the requisite check boxes are checked on for it to show mounted disks; the disks are drawn in and spin up then they just spin down and sit there until ejected using the eject button. I've inserted CDs & DVDs burned on other Macs and also a music CD and the behavior is consistent for each type.

Old Dvd's will play, But most New Dvd's will not play. I insert them and it revs up like they are loading then it kicks them out. Sometimes I can put an older dvd in to get it started and then I can eject the older dvd and then insert a new one and it will then play.

Can I use the MacBook Air superdrive with another Mac, such as a MacBook Pro?

I've been trying to install OS X.5 on a new HD that I just installed into a Black MacBook... the DVDs are coming from an Aluminum MacBook. I have already formatted (Partitioned [1]) the HD so that it is in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and it's in GUID Partition Table Scheme. I restart the Laptop and it asks me what language I want to install OS X in, I pick English, and it stalls for about 30 seconds and then says: "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer."
View 3 Replies View RelatedI own a MacBook Pro, around a year old, which is not recognising any video DVDs I insert. After putting them in, the computer makes the usual motions and sounds, but after a few seconds spits the disk out again. The disk isn't mounted on the desktop during this time, and DVD player does not launch automatically. I have tried opening DVD player myself while the computer is trying to find the disk, but there is still no result.
My MacBook has previously recognised these same disks, up to a few weeks ago when I found I might need to insert the disk two or three times before it played. CDs are still recognised by the computer (and iTunes, as well as mounting on the desktop), as are DVD-ROMs. I have tried many different DVDs, all of which play in my other Macs and DVD players.
I tried to burn a DVD for a first time on my MacBookPro and nothing is happening. I tried to burn CD and it works. I can play a DVD for ex. but I can't write? I used Verbatim DVD-R Advanced Azo +. The problem is when I clic to burn the Toast window shows preparing and after that nothing is happening, like everythings just stops. I have to restart my MBP to eject the DVD. When I put it again, it shows that is empty? Do you have any clue? I used Toast 8 Titanium.

I was told by Extensis that I could not get them back, but that I needed to upgrade to Fusion 3 which would be compatible with Lion. I did that. When I tried to get my stored fonts off the CDs and DVDs I'd stored them on all the CDs appeared to be blank and I got a message on the DVD that it cannot be read on my computer. (I have used all these CDs and DVDs before.)
