I have a G5 PowerMac and it has a SuperDrive. I can still watch DVDs but I cannot burn them. When I put in a blank it just spits them out. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but my iDVD is not compatable with the version of OSX I am running. I can't even burn music onto a DVD from itunes. CDs work fine though.
View 6 RepliesMy new DVD burner will play CDs and DVDs and burn CDs, but will not burn DVDs through the finder. Will getting TOAST definitely enable me to burn DVDs? I don't really need it otherwise and I would rather not buy it unless it will definitely enable me to burn DVDs.

I own a macbook pro, mid 2009 and its superdrive was working fine till 3 days ago. Now, whenever I try to insert a CD or DVD, the drive doesn't read it at all and after 2'' it ejects it. I tried reseting SMC and PRAM with no luck. I also tried that "batmac" trick [hold the mac upside down] with no luck either except my neck is now damaged too..
So, two questions:
1)What could the damage be? It's not a lens thing since it doesn't even try to read the cddvd.
2)My warranty is no longer valid [expired 1 month ago..]. How much would it cost to replace it? I live in Greece and no Apple Store exists here yet. I must take it to my provider [authorized reseller], check it [don't know how much this is going to cost either] and have it replaced.
Does anyone else have this problem? All the DVDs I put into the Super Drive have the edges torn up (i.e. they become jagged).

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy Macbook Pro is approaching its second birthday and now refuses to accept any DVDs, it takes them, swirls them around making a funny noise for a few seconds and then spits the disc back out. I want update to Snow Leopard, but can't, I want to install Windows 7, but can't and more importantly can't even run FM2010! I can't see how Apple can justify charging so much and have the nerve to call the drive 'super', when it is clearly not. Reading across the net on forums this seems to be a common problem and one that Apple don't want to know. Can anyone recommend an external DVD drive to buy?
View 2 Replies View RelatedEver since I updated my '10 Mac Pro to Lion (months ago), my original built in superdrive will not read any DVD's or CD's, commercial or not, that have data on them... It simply assumes the disk is blank when it clearly isn't. Now, if I insert a blank DVD and burn it, it works like a charm... but it will then NOT read the disk that it just burned??? How and why did Lion break my superdrive?

I've rented 3 dvds from Netflix and tried to watch them in my MBP, thinking there was a problem with the dvd, but they all have the same issues. The video will suddenly freeze but the audio keeps going. The only way I can get out of this frozen screen is to use the remote that came w/ my MBP to eject the dvd. Also, the dvd menus are no longer functional. I can only press play but I can not navigate the menus with my remote, or with the mouse (the mouse cursor disappears now when I put a dvd in the drive). When I press play, it will play for about 10 minutes and then freeze. It seems like each time it's freezing about halfway into a track/chapter. I can eject the dvd, go back to the beginning, skip forward to the next track, and rewind to just after the point where it freezes, but I have to do this with EVERY track/chapter.
And I have to eject it every time or it won't play at all. This is a dvd-burning Superdrive. I have no idea how I would go about replacing the drive if it's broken, as it's built into the laptop with no way that I can see to access it. The laptop is just barely out of warranty. Here's another Mac oddity: when I log into Apple's own forums, the option to post a new thread in any of their forums is gone. It's not at the top of the page where it used to be, nor is it anywhere on any of the pages that I've visited. I'm talking about when I go to the main discussions page, and then click on the link for Macbook Pro or iPod, there's nothing there for posting.
Superdrive not reading dvd movies after lion upgrade.
Also cannot bure DVD -r discs after upgrade. All was fine with Leopard.

Nothing appears on the desktop, and the DVD doesn't play (this is the second DVD I've tried). The drive works to download software though. These are commercial DVDs from Lovefilm in the UK - there are bound to be some scratches - does this mean I can only play new DVDs?
Also, if I click Finder to eject the DVD, the command is light gray, meaning the IMAC has not actually registered that there's a DVD in the drive, so I have to log off and on again for the DVD icon to appear on the desktop, at which point I can eject it. However, if I click it, it doesn't play. I'd really like to play films if I can.
I don't know what operating system I have, except that it's MAC OS X. I only just got it new two days ago.

I'm new to using the Mac. I currently have the Macbook Pro as well as the 24" iMac. I have been trying and trying to burn some CDs and well as DVDs but have no idea how to do it. Could someone lead me to a link or give me directions on how to do it please? I usually use Nero on my PC, but would hate to go back n forth for this operation. Also, I rip alot of my DVDs as a back up as well as to watch them on my HD player. Normally I would use DVD Shrink on my PC. Am I able to do the same on Mac or do I need an additional software?

Because it was a simple burn, I was going to use finder. For some reason, I can't. This is the window that pops up when I try to choose "Open with Finder" Code: The operation can�t be completed because you don�t have the necessary permission. Not sure whats up with that seeing as I am admin on my MBP. I have repaired permissions and that didn't work. Weird still, I can burn in iTunes and Toast. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on?

I used Verbatim DVD-R Advanced Azo +. The problem is when I clic to burn the Toast window shows preparing and after that nothing is happening, like everythings just stops. Every time i try to burn a cd/dvd on my mbp no matter which burn application i choose.. the superdrive likes to rejeckt the medium since the 10.5.2 update and it says there was an intern error.

My G4 12" PowerBook will not burn DVDs with the newer 8x or faster DVDs.
It has the 2x burner in it and I have't been able to burn DVDs since I ran out of 2x disk some time ago. (I can't find any 2x disk around here any more.)
I've been burning DVDs and I've noticed Toast needs to encode the movie before it burns it. What exactly is encoding? Is it converting? Also, what format does Toast use to burn DVDs?

It is .AVI, and I had to use Perian to view it in QuitckTime.. no biggie.
However when I went to burn it to a CD I gave BURN a shot. It had to convert the files in order to be able to create a DVD player compatible DVD.
This process was taking forever...... Is this normal with any program?
What about using iDVD or other DVD making software?? Would it be any quicker at converting?
