MacBook Pro :: Run Out Of Space - Burn CD Of Data?
May 3, 2012
We have run out of space on our laptop. What would be the best way to store info/pictures/video aside from Time Machine? Is there an easy way to transfer data to an external hard drive or should I begin to burn CD of the data?
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I used Handbrake to rip encode the dvd to mp4. Now I want to burn it to a DVD for a cheap backup.
mp4 is 1.4gb
I keep getting an error saying the data I'm trying to burn is over 4 gb's and too big for my blank disc. How's that possible?
Shouldn't I be able to burn the mp4 to a dvd easily in iDVD?

I am trying to delete some data from my macbook pro. I am running out of storage and decided to purchase an external hard drive for my go pro videos. In total the videos are around 60-70gb of data. When i transferred them to my external hard drive i disconnected it and deleted the photos from iPhoto. The problem is....it didn't free up any space. Now my storage just allocated that space to other things which it shouldn't have done?
The first photo is before i deleted the movies. The second is what happened after i did. It now says that 71 gb of data is being used for backups. I do have Time Machine on and i do a backup once a month onto an external hard drive. Im currently running the newest version of yosemite.Â

I finally got IPartition, and I have the Corolis CDMaker. But when I try to burn, it says there isn't enough space. When I look closer, I see that I will need 2315 MB of space on my CD to burn it. I'm on an Emac without a DVD burner. This is basically a slap to the face. Is something wrong? How can iPartition, which is around 19MB big, require that much space on a CD to burn? Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I understand I'm supposed to drag the program to Corolis CDMaker, then hit Burn. Btw, I'm on OSX Tiger.

My MB Air is not booting (I get the ever gray Apple logo screen with the spinning wheel, and nothing happens) Following instructions I found online, I tried the disk utility repair disk and permissions and, apparently, there's nothing wrong. Still, the system won't boot!Â
I'm now trying to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but the system requires about 0.5 GB of additional free disk space to install!Â
Is there anyway I can access the OS terminal screen (command line interface), so I may delete a few files, creating additional disk space?Â
Info:
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.3), OS reinstall

I recently burned a project to DVD. It's a data disc, and seems to have worked fine, about 1.2 GB of the four available on the DVD-R I burned with a Superdrive on my G4 desktop.
I told it to write session in Toast 7 Titanium, but when i try to burn something else to the disc, Toast rejects it. With DVD's, can you only burn one data disc? No multiple sessions? It's okay if this is the case, I just want to know.

I'm looking for a simple software to burn blu-ray data. I already have the external drive. And no, I'm not looking into burning a blu-ray movie. This is just for data, aka a UDF disc. I know Toast, but I'm not too keen of spending that much money just to get a seemingly simple task.

Does anyone know the meaning of an error code -43? I receive this when trying to burn a data DVD from the Finder; the error text is to the effect of "<cannot find resource fork> for <path not accessible>". Doesn't seem to matter what I'm trying to burn. Burning disc images using Disk Utility or from iDVD works fine. My hard disk, from where the files are being copied, verified with no errors.

Prior to Lion, whenever I open a window at bottom it would show # of items and space available in that window. Now all that info is missing in Lion. How can I get it back? Looking at options under Finder, I don't spot a way to restore like "15 items, 7GB available" as I used to see.

I have a 2011 MBP with a 250GB HDD. When I open the HDD in "Finder" it shows the following:FolderSizeUsers151.18 GBApplications13.97 GBLibrary10.79 GBSystem5.69 GBSpam6 KBUsers Guides and Information60 BÂ
When I check the data with OmniDiskKeeper, it shows "similar" data (a little less). Â
ISSUE:Â When I open the Mac HDD with Finder, and hit Command + I, it shows I have used 246.56 GB (only 2.64 GB available).Â
Checking with Terminal Commands (du, df, etc. ) all mimic Command + I data.

I recently purchased a 120gb SSD to put in my mac mini. In preparation for this, I created a second partition on my drive as a data drive where I will store things in order to make a time machine backup with the 120gb drive. Everything went as planned, except now, I cannot expand my data partition to use the whole disk. Below is a screen capture of what I'm talking about:Â
To accomplish putting my OS on only 120GB of hard drive, I've made symbolic links for most of the folders in my ~/ folder
This is what the ~/ Folder looks like on my Macintosh HD partition
This is where these files are actually located
As far as I can gather, the only way I can combine these partitions now is to re-format the entire drive, which as you can see would cause me many problems. How to expand a partition "upwards" for lack of a better term? I'm fairly new to Mac.

How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.

I only have like 8 gb left on my macbook's hard drive. Are there any programs I can run that will defrag/free up space? How much does Apple Store typically charge to upgrade a hard drive? How easy is it to do myself?

I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

I have the MacBook Pro 2010 13" and recently I've noticed my disc space is slowly decreasing with use.
Im not downloading files or anything, but today I lost around 600 MB of space, I just kept opening my Finder to discover less and less disc space each time.
Is this normal or do I have a problem, this is the first time I've noticed it in the month and a half I've owned the machine.

Just quite surprised and then not at the same time that my 11.6 has just 46gbs after a fresh install of leopard. Can't fit anything on there! Looking at my migration assistant, I won't be able to transfer a lot of my applications over. Anyone who wants to do some video work, bootcamping, or photoshopping/editing shouldn't even look at a 64gb. An ultimate 11" seems to be a must for the harddrive space and the 4gb of ram.

It is supposed to be the best burning package on mac. But I doubt it. I convert videos to dvd-video format using the absolutely brilliant windows7 application convertxtodvd. Please dont tell me to use a mac application instead of it. I tried it many times, there were always several problems(slow speed, subs etc). This is not the case here.
So, I want these dvd-videos in Video_ts format, to be burned in dvd disks using toast. It is supposed that video_ts folder are a standard folder, no matter the system you use. But toast has a different opinion. When I drag the folder in the dvd-video window, it asks to re-encode the video!!!If I try to burn this video_ts folder in windows machine using 'nero', no problem at all, straight burning! I really cannot understand why this happens.
Another problem I have is that the files I want toast to burn, usually reside to network computer. Is there any way to burn files from a network computer(win) using toast? Can toast access network or not? If not, I have to manually copy files to local disk, several minutes spent for copying gigabytes just to be able to burn them.

My new DVD burner will play CDs and DVDs and burn CDs, but will not burn DVDs through the finder. Will getting TOAST definitely enable me to burn DVDs? I don't really need it otherwise and I would rather not buy it unless it will definitely enable me to burn DVDs.

I have lost all my data from my harts drive. The laptop is under warranty. I have been told that they have replaced my hard drive but could not get any data off the old one. I have now lost all my data, photos, files, music etc. NO backups, only simply because i did not know how to do them. Is there any way of getting the files back? All my work spreadsheets and accounts were also lost.
