I have 2 account on my macbook. One account seem to be cannot save any preferences, such as safari browsing history, my keynote custom toolbar, recent documents, etc. Everything seem to be reset after restart, the other account works just fine.
Whenever I need to restart my MacBook Pro, a bunch of my preferences are lost. For example, I have to drag Google Chrome back in the dock. I lose my Expose preferences, login items I've disabled still pop up. Keyboard shortcuts with Spotlight (which I keep disabled because of a program I use), get set to default. It's terrbily frustrating to have to reset all these things over and over again and I can't find the answer. Part of it is I'm not terribly saavy with computer language. I can find the Terminal and type in commands though.
I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not talking about the System Preferences app itself, I'm talking about the settings within the app. So for instance, the security settings, and the mouse settings, energy saver, etc.
Where can I find the settings files on my Mac so I can back them up?
I am having trouble finding a folder on my macbook that I am 100% positive that it is on my computer but when I enter the folder name in the finder it will not come up. It was a folder that was buried in one folder and then you had to open another folder and then another one and so on. It is buried but like I said I know for a fact it is there, somewhere.
How do you find the path to where a document is saved on your computer? In spotlight, you used to be able to hover your mouse over it to see the path but that no longer works.

I just migrated from Lion on an old MacBook series 2007 to a MacBook Air. Yesterday, I opened up a grading file in Excel 2011, entered grades, saved the file (NOT Save As - just Save) handed back the assignments to my students - and then went to reopen the file later, and all of my changes were gone. I made more changes, Saved, just opened the file again, and they aren't there. To experiment, I opened the file just now, wrote in a silly comment on the top line, saved, reopened without quitting excel - and the changes aren't there.
A temporary work-around is that I can do a Save As every time I make changes, but that's ridiculous - I'm often updating a file and need the changes to be there. I just tried this with Word as well and I'm having the same problem - some Saved changes are there, some are not.
I'm struggling with finding a pages file I saved. It is very important! I have been looking and have checked my downloads, trash, recent pages documents, desktop, and on flash drives but can't find it. Where else to search?
I downloaded the Skype application but it saved as a volume on my MacBook. I can't delete it - all I can do is eject but would like to get rid of Skype all together.
Ever since I upgraded to snow leopard since it came out, I have been having problems with updates, such as iPhoto, iTunes everything and anything. Whenever there is a new update released by apple and I open up for example iTunes it tells me there is an update available, so I click on update. It downloads when it is done I click install, when it is installing I get an error saying: The Update "Compressor Update" can't be saved. The update could not be expanded and verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading. The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that Software Update runs.
I'm a macbook air user and I have a problem with my document saving. I was doing a project and I put the information I needed in a document. I am pretty sure i saved it cause I remember I checked the name of it. It was yesterday and today I can't find it anywhere. It's not in recent document and I can't find it in spotlight or document searching or even trash. I checked the available space in the macintosh hd and I have nearly 1/3 left. It's fine if I can't find this doc i will just redo it but I'm really worried what if next time if something really important goes missing and I don't want to do that again!
I used to access the documents through my idisc(MobileMe.) but now this has ceased, I am not sure how to download my saved docs into the iPad. I have ticked all the boxes to do this when setting up the cloud!
I was trying to open an existing Numbers document saved to my desktop. It took me to the App Store, but I didn't have access to a Wireless network. If it needed an update, why does it require the update to open an existing/previously saved document?Â
Need to open Pages documents. I created a document on an older version of pages and now my new MacBook Air won't open it and says I need to save it on Pages 09 first. How do I do that? I really need to be able to open my old (old as in only a year old) Pages documents.
Apparently I have over 170 GB of programs saved on my hard drive, but I do not use it for anything fancy or did not install anything spectacular. When checking the program size, iMovie is the biggest one with only 2,1 GB. I cannot find the reason why there should be so much on the hard drive. Â
I have a Macbook Pro of middle 2010, updated to Yosemite lately.

I can't find the data I saved onto a WD Passport for Mac external hard drive. I know there is something on the external drive, but I can't see it when I open up the icon for it. I didn't save it using time machine
I am running OS X 10.4.11 on a "pod" iMAC. When I open system preferences and click on network, I get a pop up window that states my network preferences have been changed by another application. When I click on the green "OK" box the pop up goes away and comes right back. This is driving me crazy because when it gets into this cycle it's almost impossible to get out of the preferences panel or even check the settings! It's like it gets into a closed loop and won't let you do anything.
A few days ago my email was hacked into which sent a spam email to all my contacts. I changed my password to that account, warned everyone in my contacts, and haven't had a problem with email since. However, I tried to do the 'delete all cookies' again and when I go to safari/preferences/privacy...there is nothing on that screen under that tab. Not even a question mark. I changed my history items to be removed every day from every week but don't think that would be the issue.Â

For the first time, my screen shots [command + control + shift + 3] and [command + control + shift + 4] are not saving to my desktop. I don't recall changing this setting (or how to). Where are they going? I haven't installed any software that should conflict with this macro (haven't installed anything at all except Sim City 4 since last using the screenshot feature. The desktop folder is empty and a search for "Picture 1" finds nothing.
I have an AOL email account as well as an email for my business through my website. The email for my business is working with no problems, but the AOL email is not showing the emails i am sending in the sent folder. It is also not saving an email as a draft if I choose to do so, it says "the email could not be saved". I also have both these email accounts linked to my phone and use the email app on my phone to send and receive emails for both accounts during the day.
I am using my laptop during the evening with the mac mail app and that is where I am having the problem. My phone will show the sent messages that I send on my phone, but none of them that I have sent from my laptop either. Anyone know why the emails I send do not show in the sent folder in the mail app on my laptop? Why it is telling me it cannot save an email as a draft? Everything was working fine a couple weeks ago, but since then I have not been able to view my sent messages or save emails as drafts.
