Today I decided install Win7 on my MBP and while partitioning the HDD using bootcamp I encountered the following error. Consequently, I used the Disk Utility in order to partition the drive. However it too failed (even for smaller sizes). How do I go about partitioning the hard drive? Erase everything and restore from backup?
View 6 RepliesI've got an SSD in the HDD space, and a newmodeus HDD bay in the optical drive (same thing as the optibay). So what I was thinking was to install windows in a partition on the 500gb HDD. My SSD is only 80GB so I wanted to save space on that. Here is what I have tried:
Macbook set up with SDD and HDD, no optical drive.
Bootcamp will not let me install windows using an ISO image, needs a CD to install.
So I put my HDD in the HDD bay and put the optical drive back in. I then started up the macbook using a firewire drive (HDD has no OS on it, only the SDD does). Bootcamp then tells me it can't partition an external disk and I have to boot up using an internal disk (even though I WANT to partition the internal disk... bootcamp wouldnt let me get to that option running off a firewire drive). It seems like the only thing left is to just install windows on an SSD partition.
Anyone install Windows 7 via bootcamp on the 2010 Air? [URL]. Be interested in hearing your comments, on disc space used, boot times into windows, memory usage, and any other things worth mentioning, does bootcamp allow you to choose the partition size?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed snow leopard, the GM version, and after getting nice and settled I wanted to install windows 7, in bootcamp. So I create the partition, and then thats the end of it. None of the start up buttons will work, I tried holding down the X button while the mac starts up, but nothing will happen. The apple logo doesn't show up either. Right now, I booted off of ubuntu, and I'm on firefox. It seems the buttons don't work and I don't know why. Also, when I put in the windows 7 dvd, it just read:

Before I installed Parallels 5, I had a 2.4ghz 13" MBP w/ 4GB RAM that was dual-booting Windows XP. I then installed Parallels, and instead of installing an OS from a CD (I have Win7 fresh install CD), I decided to instead install Windows XP onto my VM from Bootcamp since my specs aren't as fast and I heard Win7 may lag a bit more than XP.
My question is, in the future if I want to install Win7, what would happen in these 2 scenarios:
1. I install Win7 onto my bootcamp partition (would my parallels copy of windows become corrupt/unusable?)
2. I install Win7 onto VM via Parallels
I just bought a Macbook pro a few months ago and I love it. However, I do need windows for some things and I am pretty set on installing Windows 7 with bootcamp. A relative of mine bought a dell and was sent the free upgrade discs. He got an oranage disc that says Operating System on the front. It also says Windows 7 Upgrade Option as well as This DVD supports 64-bit edition only. Lastly it says For Use Only as an Upgrade to a Qualifying Dell Windows 7 Upgrade Option PC.
My question is are the setup files on there and everything I need to successfully install Windows 7 on my mac? My guess is yes, but I really do not want to mess anything up so I wanted to make sure! It came with a gray disc that has a product key on it and is labeled Upgrade Assistant and says Insert this DVD before upgrading to Windows 7. Not sure if that matters or not. Can I use this disc or these discs to get myself Windows 7 on my Macbook?
New to macs here actually new to apple also. I had a few questions regarding installing windows 7 on my late 2009 macbook pro 15". What is the difference in bootcamp and parallels is it? Does one run like a virtual windows in the background while bootcamp let's you boot in either osx or windows? I have a xps desktop from Dell that has windows vista pre installed. Now I bought a copy of windows 7 when it was released fro newegg. Now I assume I cannot use that disc and serial, is that correct? Since I use it on my xps desktop? I would need to purchase another copy of windows correct? With that said, which version do I purchase? 32 or 64 bit? My Macbook pro is pretty much already setup (apps, pics, music, etc) can i still install windows 7 or will it format my HD and i would need to then reinstall everything on the Mac side? What are the "major" cons to installing windows 7 on a mbp? So far I have gathered battery life being the biggest con, any others?
View 2 Replies View Relatedso i just installed bootcamp windows 7 ultimate 7600 x86 retail on 100gb partition and for some reason when i try to install the bootcamp drivers off the install OSX cd it brings up a installer assistant for remote macOSX install and macbook air cd/dvd sharing (it looks like as if its recognizing my mbp as a mba). so that didnt work. im trying to install boot camp update 2.1 for windows vista 32 bit and thats not opening up to install....the only things ive installed so far are the nvidia 9M series drivers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to partition my hard drive on my macbook in order to install Windows 7, but upon doing so I was greeted with a message informing me that some files couldn't be moved and that I would have to reformat my HD. I created a backup disk image using disk utility and proceeded to erase and reinstall my OS. My OS is now reinstalled but I don't know how to go about using my backup to add all my old preferences, files, and applications. I've tried using restore through the disk utility but it isn't allowing me to do so. All I want are my old files and the ability to partition my drive!

-Win7 Upgrade: I currently own a valid copy of XP and a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disc. Is it possible to install the XP, then upgrade to Win7 on my MBP? If so, are there any guides/tricks I should know of before attempting?
-Timing: Can I install the windows after I've played around in OS X and installed/saved a couple of things there? Will installing windows wipe out my stuff in OS X or is it completely unrelated? My concern here is that I will be getting my MPB before I can get my copy of windows back, and during that time I need to do some work.
-Partitioning amount: this kind of ties into the previous question. How much should I partition (% wise) for the windows, and when should I do it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble updating from bootcamp 3.0 to 3.1 in windows 7 PRO 32-bit. Both windows OS and MAC OS X are fully updated. I've tried running the apple software update program and I don't get any error messages, it tells me to restart and after the restart Bootcamp is still 3.0. I've tried downloading the file and running the file. But when I go to run the file nothing happens! I've tried to re-download the file again but still no luck.

I have download and installed what Apple is calling BootCamp 3.2 x64 but when the app crash message comes up it say 3.1. I am out of ideas why the bootcamp manager will not run.

I'm not having any luck; the sliders are grayed out and I can't make any changes with system tools 6.06. I've also got errors when trying to install Nvidia drivers other than the ones included with Bootcamp. What driver/system tools version are you using to OC? And what settings have you tried? I've been wanting to partition my startup disc on my Emac (which is running Tiger) so I can have a Panther partition and a Tiger partition. I have many reasons for doing so, but I don't really want to go through that right now.
I tried going to Disk Utility, but apparently, the startup disk cant be partitioned while I'm on it. I'm a new mac user, so I am having difficulty figuring out how to partition my 40GB harddrive to have one 10GB volume that Panther can go to. From what I hear, I have to partition using an OSX disc, and then reinstall Tiger and then I can install Panther. Please tell me there's a simpler way. I really don't want to go through reinstalling Tiger again.
I've been trying for days to get bootcamp to work on my 2010 MBP and it freezes every time. When I say freezes I mean, it locks up my entire computer to the point where my only option is to do a hard restart with the power button. Is there any way to get it to partition my hard drive or use another program to do it?

I tried to use Bootcamp to install Windows XP Professional. When trying to partition through bootcamp I got this error:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Backup the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume. Restore your info to the disk and try using bootcamp assistant again."
I tried to create a journaled partition after using the disk utility to fix any problems which it found none. The problem was that the partitioning never stopped it went on for hours till I finally canceled it. I also have a problem with VMware Fusion which you can find here: [URL]
Here's the problem. I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate through bootcamp and the problem is, that when it restarts to boot and install from DVD, the screen goes black with the tickling white underscore and it won't load.
every time I start OSX, a box appears saying that the latest firmware for the EFI 1.4 or something has been successfully updated. Could it be related or is it something else?

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256MB
Noticed with a Win7 bootcamp install the SSD is not detected and scheduled disk defragmentation would best be turned off manually. You may also want to turn off hibernation to save from 2-4GB of disc space. A full install of Win7 takes about 10GB and runs excellent.
