MacBook Pro :: Optical Drive Scratching Discs

Jun 28, 2009

I've noticed that recently my macbook pro drive has been severely scratching DVD's now and then (doesn't always happen but when it does it renders the DVD unusable). At first I wasn't sure if it was the drive or not but now I am sure it is. The laptop hasn't been moved or dropped in anyway and its just started happening for no apparent reason - laptop isn't on a tilt either it hasn't been moved from the desk in weeks.

Is this an issue with the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 drive? It's still in warranty and i'm going to take it into a authorised apple service provider tomorrow and see what they can do but I just wanted to check about this drive as I don't really want a replacement of the same drive if its just going to do it again. Also is there any chance apple could offer some form of compensation for the DVD that was just destroyed by it? It was a part of a boxset so kind of ruins the collection.

IMac :: I5 Scratching Discs Drive?

Nov 23, 2009

I've noticed that every time I eject a disc, I see some scratches. I put in the Star Trek Digital Copy disc into my iMac disc drive and when it ejected, I found a lot of scratches on it. My Sims 3 and Spore discs also have similar type of scratches. Is anyone having this problem or am I taking out the disc wrong causing the scratches? This is my first iMac and I'm a bit sad about this as I do not want to lug this computer back to the store to get a replacement... And if I return it, do I have to bring it back to the same store or can I go to one that is closer to me?

IMac :: Scratching Discs While Burning?

Aug 12, 2009

I was burning a few discs the other day and noticed that my iMac is leaving ~1cm curved scratch marks around the middle of the disc (ie, about equal distance between the hole in the middle and the edge). It won't do it every time, but I'd say about 50%. Anybody have any clue what's causing the scratches?

MacBook :: CD / DVD Drive Won't Read Discs

Feb 14, 2009

First, my MacBook is a little more than a year old and is no longer covered under warranty, so I would like to try any possible fixes (like cleaning the drive) before having to buy a new drive. Here's my problem: when I put a CD or DVD into the drive, it spins around and clicks a lot but never seems to really catch, and after about a minute or so of this, it ejects itself. It never shows up on my desktop, so the computer is unable to read anything from the CD or DVD. I know the problem is not the CD or DVD, because I've tried the same discs on other machines and they work fine. This problem came up on me gradually. It started happening a few months ago, and maybe only 1 out of 10 or 20 discs would it do this. Then it became a third of the time, then half of the time, and now it's about 99% of the time I try to insert a disc. I was able to get one disc to work a few days ago, but when I ejected it and reinserted it, it didn't work the second time.

MacBook Pro :: DVD-CD Drive Won't Accept Discs?

Sep 21, 2009

I have a 15" unibody Macbook pro

The last time I used my cd drive was a couple months ago to burn a cd.

The cd didn't come out so I followed the steps to eject it and it came out properly. Since then I haven't used the drive until recently. When I went to enter a cd to burn some songs onto it, the drive wouldn't accept any discs. As if there was something in there but there is nothing.

some steps to get my cd/dvd drive to accept discs again please?

OS X :: Won't Use Optical Drive In Place Of Macbook Drive

Jul 7, 2010

So I have a Macbook (late 2008 model), and the optical drive essentially went bye bye. If I put a disc in, it will have trouble recognizing it and then it will eject out. Anyways, last night, I did some maintenance on OnyX and it said that my volume needs to be repaired. Even Disc Utility failed to finish and said that the "filesystem verify or repair failed."

The short of it, I need to put the Leopard disc in there and do a disc repair. However, is there a way, via firewire, where I could actually use my iMac's optical disc drive in place of the Macbook and connect via firewire, then do the disc repair? If so, what would be the specific way to do this?

MacBook Pro :: Its Still Scratching Cds After Repair?

Jun 4, 2012

I went today to get my macbook pro fixed in Genius Bar, cause the superdrive was scratching cds, and the display (hinges) made some noise when closing, due to the misplaced display. Well ! So, now the display is well placed, but still making a bit of noise (that's not that important), but my superdrive, now scratches more severely my cds ! Tried a cd, and it ejects scratched in form of L more or less. The superdrive is "brand new", and makes very strange noises when inserting the cd or turning on the laptop...

MacBook Pro :: Super Drive Failing To Read The Discs And Ejecting Them Within 30 Seconds

Dec 7, 2014

The Super Drive on my MBP seems to be completely busted, whenever I try to read a DVD or CD it takes the disc in, spins it around a couple of times and then ejects it again without ever coming up with any options as to what to do with the disc. Discs don't appear in Finder either. It's obviously failing to read the discs and ejecting them within 30 seconds.

Now I've searched for a solution and as a result I've reset the NVRAM to no avail, and also tried using a CD lens cleaner but that seemed to have no effect either, I guess maybe as it got ejected within just 30 seconds as every other disc does.

The next solution I've found online is to delete Finder's preference files. The files I'm supposed to delete are "com.apple.finder.plist" and com.apple.sidebars.plist", however neither of these files appear to exist on my computer.

I remember discovering the fault while my MBP was still in warranty but I rarely use the Super Drive so totally forgot about it and it's now out of warranty

MacBook Air :: Won't Work / With Or Without Optical Drive

Mar 16, 2009

My next Mac will be a laptop, and I will NEVER need the Macbook pro's power. I just web-surf and listen to music mostly. I only use the optical drive to watch dvds. But I have a separate player for my much larger TV now. So for say 99 percent of the time, an optical drive would be unnecessary. But I would buy apple's separate optical drive; which I think is a good idea. On my present computer, a first generation Mac Mini, the DVD drive is obviously obsolete now, especially when it comes to Blu-Ray. But what if a like in 2 years a new optical format comes out, or at least a much faster version? If I had a Macbook I would be stuck, never being able to upgrade the internal drive. If the Macbook's optical drive was easily upgradable, then this would be a no brainer.

MacBook Pro :: Booting Off USB Optical Drive?

Feb 17, 2010

So I have a 2.2GHz SR MBP, and the superdrive just went out on me. It will read and write to CDs, but won't recognize any DVDs that I insert into it. I bought a USB enclosure and DVD drive, and it works fine to read and write to DVDs when in Snow Leopard, but I am unable to boot from it (specifically so I can install Windows 7, but I can't boot SL either). I reboot and and hold down option, and only see Macintosh HD, not the disk I'm trying to boot off. I've cloned SL to my flash drive and I can boot off that fine, but unfortunately I'm unable to do that with Windows...

Any ideas? I've googled it and it seems like booting off a USB optical drive is supported, so I'm unsure why it's not working for me...

MacBook Pro :: Replacing Optical Drive With SSD?

Apr 20, 2012

I have a time machine backup on external drive.

I would like to:

1. clean install Lion on the new SSD (120 GB)

2. restore apps from my backup on the SSD

3. keep only data on the existing HDD

My questions:

What is the best way to make it?

Can I just keep the existing system on my non-SSD HDD, and after having Lion on SSD keep just data and delete the system libraries? Or is it better to format the whole disk and restore data from time machine backup (so it is not fragmented..

MacBook Pro :: Keep The Optical Drive Spinning?

I want to keep the optical drive constantly spinning. I am running music for a dance recital, and all their music is on CDs and I would prefer not to rip it in. My problem is that for the rehearsals, every time they rehearse a new song, I have to wait minimum 10 seconds for the drive to spin up and load the song. Is there any way I can keep the drive spinning until im done with it? Or a way to temporarily load the CD into RAM?

MacBook Pro :: Swapping Optical Drive For SSD - How To Set It Up?

Jun 14, 2012

I'm going to purchase a Crucial M4 128GB SSD for my Late 2011 13" i7 Macbook Pro. I don't use my optical drive at all, so I figure I may as well swap that out for my current 750GB HDD, and put the SSD in the main harddrive bay. I know full well how to physically install the respective drives, but my confusion comes when cloning the current HD onto the SSD, then moving all your media files (music, movies, documents etc) over to the HD, while keeping your system files and applications on the SSD.

So what I really need, is a PROPER in depth guide from the start of the setup process (First boot after installation of physical drives) detailing how to copy my system files and applications over to the SSD so I can boot from it, while keeping my data & media files on the HD and being able to access them all as I normally would through finder.

MacBook Pro :: How Many GB/s Is The Optical Drive Bay For A Mid 2009 (5,4)

Jul 4, 2012

I've installed a Crucial M4 256GB SSD into the traditional hard drive bay of my Mid 2009, Macbook Pro (5,4). I started getting beachballs immediately after the least bit of intensive CPU usage and pinpointed the problem to be the faulty EFI 1.7 firmware update. I then downgraded to EFI 1.6, and the beachballs ceased, but the problem now is that the Hard Drive controller now only allow for up to 1.5 GB/s interfaces. With that, I'm now only using 25% of the speed potential of my SSD, which is quite frankly a waste of money.

I'm thinking of installing an optibay, in place of the optical drive and installing the SSD there, leaving my original hard drive in the original hard drive bay. The problem is, I don't know if this alternative will be worthwhile, as I have no idea how fast the Optical Drive's GB/seconds are.   how fast the optical drive connector's GB/seconds is? If it's anything faster than 1.5, I'm definitely purchasing an optical bay for my HD.

MacBook Pro :: Super Drive Unable To Read Discs / Makes Clicking Noise

My Super Drive isn't reading discs at all, and, it's making this scary crackling noise. I uploaded a video on youtube of me putting 2 discs in it, 1 with content (World of Warcraft: The Frozen Throne) and the other without content (Just a blank CD).

Before I link the video, I'd like to note that I am apparently amazed by the laser seeing as how I point to it and make a note of it ._. URL
