OS X :: Won't Use Optical Drive In Place Of Macbook Drive

Jul 7, 2010

So I have a Macbook (late 2008 model), and the optical drive essentially went bye bye. If I put a disc in, it will have trouble recognizing it and then it will eject out. Anyways, last night, I did some maintenance on OnyX and it said that my volume needs to be repaired. Even Disc Utility failed to finish and said that the "filesystem verify or repair failed."

The short of it, I need to put the Leopard disc in there and do a disc repair. However, is there a way, via firewire, where I could actually use my iMac's optical disc drive in place of the Macbook and connect via firewire, then do the disc repair? If so, what would be the specific way to do this?

IMac :: Second Internal Hard Drive In Place Of Optical Drive?

Feb 5, 2010

I did a search but couldn't find any specific info as related to the 20" (late 2006) iMac. Basically, I do a lot of audio work with Logic and DP and I'm interested in replacing my 20" iMac's optical drive with a second internal hard drive. If anyone has any experience or insight regarding this, I would greatly appreciate your input. About 6 months ago, I did a DIY replacement of my iMac's internal hard drive (upgrade to 1 tb), so I'm pretty sure I'd like to DIY an optical drive / hard drive swap - that is, if it's 1) Proven to work stably (thermally and otherwise) 2) Not going to require the iMac's fan to be running faster/louder than normal Looking at my iMac's system profiler, the DVD drive is on an ATA bus (which, as I remember it, is slower than S-ATA). What kind of transfer rates do you think one could realistically expect with a hard drive on this ATA bus? Also, would I have to be careful about new hard drive compatibility, or are S-ATA and S-ATA II backwards compatible with ATA?

Hardware :: Won't Work With Optical Drive Or Hard Drive Failure

Mar 12, 2010

We have i-Mac 20" with built in i-sight Power PC, one of last ones I think before the intel. We have had a few problems before with it powering down and going to sleep. Used to hoover dust out and that seemed to fix it.

Now it won't start at all. I have tried all the PRAM and various commands to re set various things but none of these work. We had a wireless keyboard and I have just tried a wired one but I do not think either are connecting as the tab key light does not come on, which it does when I tested the wired on on my lap top.

When it died it crashed with a cd in drive. I have removed this and replaced it with the mac install disk to try and run the disk check but the optical drive is not starting at all either.

All that happens on start up is the sleep light comes on, then after a few moments fan starts to whirl. I can't hear the hard drive - have tried to rock hard drive to get it to spin but nothing.

Just wondering whether worth trying to replace optical drive or is this being controlled by hard drive - hence its not working nor hard drive. is there any way to recover data if it is the hard drive that is dead? anything else I can try and replace to fix it? could I use an external optical drive connected via USB to start?
I have tried to firewire but not joy their either!

Mac Pro :: SSD On Optical Drive Bay Or Hard Disk Drive Bay - Difference In Performance?

Sep 19, 2010

I just bought a new Mac Pro 6-core and an OWC 120Gb SSD drive. My question is putting the SSD on optical drive bay or Hard disk drive bay, is there any difference in performance? My understanding from my old PC is never to share the SATA cable with the optical drive as it will take the transfer speed of the optical drive, because they are running in the same "channel"?Is the 2 SATA cable in the optical drive bay 2 separate distinct ports/channel?

Hardware :: Won't Get Hard Drive Screws And Optical Drive Standoffs

Jul 7, 2006

I am wondering if anyone knows where I can get the screws that go in the side of the hard drive and the standoffs (screws) for the bottom of the optical drive for a Power Mac G5.

The hard drive needs screws so it will slide into and sit in the case properly.
I bought a Pioneer DVD drive to replace the original Sony SuperDrive. Apparently, there are different sized standoffs for Pioneer and Sony drives. With the Sony standoffs on the Pioneer drive, the tray scrapes the case when it ejects.

Mac Pro :: Hard Drive Will Not Mount After Optical Drive Upgrade?

Feb 23, 2012

I recently performed an optical drive install. Had to remove the hard drive bays (I use three hard drives - Luckily, 2 run OSX).  I carefully removed all three drive bays and the empty bay. When I inserted the drives into the computer I had changed the position, swapping one OSX drive with a different one and reversing the drive bays. On restart, the computer started on the drive I had not selected for startup and I received an error message stating the other drive could not mount and it gave three options (Initialize - Ignore and Eject).

I can see the drive in Disk Utility and repair the permissions (it's also located in the System Profile).

I tried a few things I read in the community using various Terminal commands but was unsuccessful.

(Let me point out that I recently switched from a PPC G5 to MacPro and swapped the drives from PPC into MacPro and all has been fine until I removed changed their positions in the bays)

MacBook Air :: Won't Work / With Or Without Optical Drive

Mar 16, 2009

My next Mac will be a laptop, and I will NEVER need the Macbook pro's power. I just web-surf and listen to music mostly. I only use the optical drive to watch dvds. But I have a separate player for my much larger TV now. So for say 99 percent of the time, an optical drive would be unnecessary. But I would buy apple's separate optical drive; which I think is a good idea. On my present computer, a first generation Mac Mini, the DVD drive is obviously obsolete now, especially when it comes to Blu-Ray. But what if a like in 2 years a new optical format comes out, or at least a much faster version? If I had a Macbook I would be stuck, never being able to upgrade the internal drive. If the Macbook's optical drive was easily upgradable, then this would be a no brainer.

MacBook Pro :: Booting Off USB Optical Drive?

Feb 17, 2010

So I have a 2.2GHz SR MBP, and the superdrive just went out on me. It will read and write to CDs, but won't recognize any DVDs that I insert into it. I bought a USB enclosure and DVD drive, and it works fine to read and write to DVDs when in Snow Leopard, but I am unable to boot from it (specifically so I can install Windows 7, but I can't boot SL either). I reboot and and hold down option, and only see Macintosh HD, not the disk I'm trying to boot off. I've cloned SL to my flash drive and I can boot off that fine, but unfortunately I'm unable to do that with Windows...

Any ideas? I've googled it and it seems like booting off a USB optical drive is supported, so I'm unsure why it's not working for me...

MacBook Pro :: Replacing Optical Drive With SSD?

Apr 20, 2012

I have a time machine backup on external drive.

I would like to:

1. clean install Lion on the new SSD (120 GB)

2. restore apps from my backup on the SSD

3. keep only data on the existing HDD

My questions:

What is the best way to make it?

Can I just keep the existing system on my non-SSD HDD, and after having Lion on SSD keep just data and delete the system libraries? Or is it better to format the whole disk and restore data from time machine backup (so it is not fragmented..

MacBook Pro :: Keep The Optical Drive Spinning?

Jun 5, 2012

I want to keep the optical drive constantly spinning. I am running music for a dance recital, and all their music is on CDs and I would prefer not to rip it in. My problem is that for the rehearsals, every time they rehearse a new song, I have to wait minimum 10 seconds for the drive to spin up and load the song. Is there any way I can keep the drive spinning until im done with it? Or a way to temporarily load the CD into RAM?

MacBook Pro :: Swapping Optical Drive For SSD - How To Set It Up?

Jun 14, 2012

I'm going to purchase a Crucial M4 128GB SSD for my Late 2011 13" i7 Macbook Pro. I don't use my optical drive at all, so I figure I may as well swap that out for my current 750GB HDD, and put the SSD in the main harddrive bay. I know full well how to physically install the respective drives, but my confusion comes when cloning the current HD onto the SSD, then moving all your media files (music, movies, documents etc) over to the HD, while keeping your system files and applications on the SSD.

So what I really need, is a PROPER in depth guide from the start of the setup process (First boot after installation of physical drives) detailing how to copy my system files and applications over to the SSD so I can boot from it, while keeping my data & media files on the HD and being able to access them all as I normally would through finder.

MacBook Pro :: How Many GB/s Is The Optical Drive Bay For A Mid 2009 (5,4)

Jul 4, 2012

I've installed a Crucial M4 256GB SSD into the traditional hard drive bay of my Mid 2009, Macbook Pro (5,4). I started getting beachballs immediately after the least bit of intensive CPU usage and pinpointed the problem to be the faulty EFI 1.7 firmware update. I then downgraded to EFI 1.6, and the beachballs ceased, but the problem now is that the Hard Drive controller now only allow for up to 1.5 GB/s interfaces. With that, I'm now only using 25% of the speed potential of my SSD, which is quite frankly a waste of money.

I'm thinking of installing an optibay, in place of the optical drive and installing the SSD there, leaving my original hard drive in the original hard drive bay. The problem is, I don't know if this alternative will be worthwhile, as I have no idea how fast the Optical Drive's GB/seconds are.   how fast the optical drive connector's GB/seconds is? If it's anything faster than 1.5, I'm definitely purchasing an optical bay for my HD.

MacBook Pro :: Optical Drive Not Reading All The Disc?

Dec 5, 2010

My friend is offering me his 2008 macbook pro for 650 should I do it here are the specs

Model Family: MacBook Pro
Display: 15"
Processor Type: 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo
Model Number: A1260
Color: Aluminum
Factory: China
Production Year:2008
Production Week:22 (May)
Production Number:774
200 gb hd
4gb of ram
also apple care til jun 11

OK so I bought the computer for 650 from my friend and soon after buying found a problem. The problem was the optical drive not reading all the disc that I put in the system. So I took the macbook pro to apple they installed a new super drive. I get home today and try to install snow leopard and have a issue. The way I went about was starting up holding the option button and waiting to boot from the disc for a fresh install. First time I tried I got a symbol that look like the restricted sign you see when you cant smoke in a area ect... So I restart and try again this time I get to the install screen click does the estimation ect.. 34 minutes than goes to 28 minutes pretty much has frozen there now, and after waiting all this time about 20 minutes I get the spinning beach ball. Also forgot to say that the super drive is now super dooper annoying loud and make odd sounds too with vibration. So I guess make another apple gen bar apt? And have them possible replace the super drive again?

MacBook :: Optical Drive Noise After Drop

Jan 4, 2011

My macbook (2.0 13" unibody) got dropped from a height of only about 10 inches. it fell on side with the optical drive(closed) there was nothing in it, but when I opened it up and woke it it made a bunch of noise like it was trying to read a disk. It now does this every time I wake it up. When I put a disk in it winds up and appears to work normally, but if I move the laptop it makes a buzzing noise, like the dvd is spinning fast and touching something inside when I move it around. Did something come loose? any ideas as to wha tthe issue is, how to diagnose it, or fix it? Also, I recently bought this macbook, and the screen says macbook pro at the bottom. However, I know they never made a 2.0 macbook pro. does it seem like maybe the screen just got replaced at some point? is it a direct replacement with the pro's? every thing seems to fit fine, but there is a small scratch/dent in one corner indicating a drop (which maybe cracked the screen?)
