For security reasons I would like to have as few open TCP ports as possible on my iMac, leaving open only those that I feel are worthwhile having enabled. How can I go about to
a) identify which TCP ports are currently open on the system
b) identify the processes that have opened the ports and understand the origin and purpose of those process
c) disable the processes that have ports open, if I feel that there is no good reason for having them open
I'm running OS X 10.9.4.

I have a 13" Retina Macbook Pro and I'm connecting it to 2 Asus monitors that I will be getting soon through thunderbolt to HDMI. The 2 monitors have built in speakers and I would like to have them both pick up the audio from my computer. Is there a way to do that? I know in the preferences I can't choose more than one audio output. Is there perhaps a software that can tweak that? I'm not looking to get a sort of hub that will pick up audio from the audio jack on my laptop because the monitors only have an output jack (green jack) and therefore, I assume, you can't insert audio into them that way.

My newish Canon LBP 6000 printer periodically stops working. I've always managed to get it going again by reinstalling it. This time, nothing I do is working. Here is a screen shot of what I get.
When I try to print, (first window, top left), the "sending data to printer" message goes on endlessly. I tried unplugging the printer USB from the computer, and then got the second window ("the printer is not connected"/"the printer is offline"). If I try to get supply levels, through System Utilities, the information is not available. Does that mean the computer can't read/send data to the printer? When I try to open Printer Utility, I get the "Printer Error" message (last window) saying "there are no registered printers. Add a printer..." But I've added the printer several times, after downloading the proper software.
I reset the printer system. When I added the printer back on, it came up with the old information:
P.S. From the first time I set up the printer, about a year ago, it always took much longer to read a document and start printing than our almost identical printer at work. That one invariably starts printing (on a PC) within 2 or 3 seconds; mine, on the Mac, takes at least12, often more.

Using Mail 7.3. In response to the piling up emails on all devices I went into advanced setting under Mail preferences and set it to removed emails from the server. I immediately realized this wouldn't work bc now I can't get my email for that email account on my iPad. It goes to my desktop and then no other devices.
When I go back to reset that so it doesn't delete from the server I get this message: Invalid Directory
The account path /Users/emma/Library/Mail/V2/POP-Info@movementsofthesoul.org@mail.movementsofthesoul.org is already being used by the account “cmos”
It won't let me Save the change. Apparently it doesn't like that I have two email addresses (accounts) with that domain.
I would like to "reset my finder windows positions".
View 14 Replies View RelatedUpdated to OS X Mavericks last week. Ever since, it has been experiencing boot problems.
- If I restart my Macbook Pro (2011 13", lowest model), it will sit at the grey screen with apple logo and spinning grey wheel forever. I notice that my HDD is NOT running (no clicking / writing sounds)
- If I restart with a PRAM reset or holding down option to select Macintosh HD boot, the hard drive starts to run (I can hear it) and it boots successfully... it takes 5+ minutes to boot up. The grey screen with apple logo is presented on my screen for about 4 minutes, then the login screen shows up but I cannot move my mouse or select a login user for 30 seconds. After this, I can log in succesfully.
-Also, switching users takes 1+ minutes. Clicking "switch user" freezes my screen.

If I reset Safari, it will often crash if TOP SITES is the first window Safari reopens with.
The crash may also be aggravated by my attempt to type something in the search bar, right after I reset.
I have now set Safari to open with a homepage, and now I can reset Safari at will and it no longer crashes after a reset.

Some of my automatic logins that the mac remembers are incorrect and my issue is that when updated, are somehow not retained in the autologin. This means the feature is often useless and causes ultra frustration as I rely on it heavily.
How do I reset the disfunctional logins, or will I have to clear them all and start over, gah? It does not happen on all of them

I edit the view options for the Applications window. I make the icons bigger, and I put a photo in the background. The window looks fine until I do a reboot (I don't know about logging out - I only have one user). Then when I open the Applications window I find it has reset to smaller icons on a white background. Doesn't matter what I do when I edit the options. It always looks the same after I restart. I can't say for certain, but I think this problem has been going on since before Mavericks. I thought the cause might be a 3rd party app but I just bought a brand new iMac and the same thing happens.

I have the microsoft arc mouse and keyboard and each of them have seperate transrecievers. The macbook air only has two ports. If I bought a usb hub would this enable me to plug the transrecievers into the hub so I would have 1 usb port free? Im considering returning them and getting logtech's unifying transreciever, but they have no small keyboards that are compatible with it.
