MacBook Pro :: Not Handling Vmware Well?

Jun 23, 2010

I have been using Vmware just for some MS Office stuff, and the i7 processor runs it fine it doesnt get hot, fans arent running too loud but after looking at the memory info it seems there is none left? OSX also becomes laggy too.

I am running WIndows 7 Standard, 1.5 GB Allocated and 2 Cores allocated.
But the memory for some reason reaches up to 26mb left?

I have 4GB Standard, is this just common when virtualising as the wired ram reaches 2.5 GB and i thought wired ram was just ram allocated to osx?

MacBook Air :: MBA Handling HD Content?

Apr 9, 2010

I have Rev B 1.86 SSD MBA.

It doesnt play 720p HD youtube smoothly. Jerky not coz of internet connection as I have 10 Mbps and up.

My question is 2.13 MBA able to handle 720p?

If the next MBA uses i7 (according to Scottdale), will that handle 720p? How about 1080p?

Or maybe 1.86 can handle HD, but I need to optimize it?

MacBook Pro :: Optimal Battery Handling?

Apr 19, 2010

I'm just wondering on how you handle the charging cycles of MBP batteries in practice. I think I read somewhere, that it should be best to work unplugged and to charge the battery as soon as the level reaches 10%. In practice, this seems to be cumbersome.

How do you handle this? Is it a problem to have the cable plugged in all the time?

MacBook Air :: Handling Storage Of ITunes Libraries

Jul 28, 2010

I recently got a used MBA and everything is great, although I am still adjusting to the 80gb hdd. So my question is how do you guys handle the storage of your itunes libraries. My options right now seem to be: Keeping the entire library on my server and using a script that allows me to download music on my MBA but have it moved to the server then deleted off the MBA.or Keeping all my music on the MBA and accepting a low amount of free space.

MacBook Air :: When Handling The Machine It Makes Creaking Noises?

Oct 23, 2010

I bought a 13" Macbook Air yesterday. I had a 2009 MBP before and have been waiting on the refresh to get this. The machine is great. Quick, responsive, light, But one thing Ive noticed is that when handling the machine it makes creaking noises.Sounds like the body is flexing. I took it into the genius bar and the guy took it in the back, said he heard it and then said that it is normal even for the previous gen because of the thin body design.

Applications :: IE 7 Tab Handling In Firefox?

Jul 19, 2007

I was forced by evil powers to use a Windows machine for a few days, as I sold my Mac Mini and I'm waiting for my new MacBook. Right now I'm writing in Firefox on a PowerBook that I borrowed, and I'm ashamed to say that I miss a feature from Internet Explorer 7's tab handling.

I love tabs, I have 10 or 20 of them opened at a time, IE7 is really slow with tabs, but it has a feature that I liked: When you have, let's say, 10 tabs open, and you are on tab #1, and a new tab opens from a link inside #1, it won't go to #11 like in Firefox, it opens between tabs #1 and #2.

I'm embarrassed, but I like it. Any extension that do that in Firefox?

OS X :: Snow Leopard / Better FONT Handling ?

Feb 18, 2009

I know. I know. It's been done to death.

But it's such a shame that fonts are SUCH a pain in OSX (auto activation, system fonts, conflicts, etc etc)... and then Leopard's "updated" FontBook was no bueno.

So sad.

Since then I've been TRYING DESPERATELY to love FEX, and now Fusion2 (which is a tad better, i think?).

So the question begs:

Will SnowLeopard do anything to help with the OSX font madness?

Applications :: Keynote 09 Graphical Capacity/handling?

Nov 11, 2010

So I'm doing a presentation about Playing Cards for a contest. I design a full deck of cards on Photoshop and them convert each card to .png to insert them on keynote one by one to arrange them like a spread deck, I put 40 cards in one slide with some object animation as well as slide animations The problem is: when I run the "view test" to see who the slides looks like, it takes FOREVER to jump to one slide to the other, and the animations barely play, I tried to make a QT video to try to see, and Keynote doesn't handle it and crashes.

I looked up to the Activity monitor, and it told me the keynote was using almost 800mb of memory (out of 4gb), to be fair I quit all the apps running just to make keynote "feel better", no progress.
The only solution was to delete the slides with the 40 cards and just work on the slides with less than 10 cards and add those 40 cards slides back when the presentation is done.

But it is so inconvenient as some objects animations on some slides are related, including all the slides with the 40 cards, furthermore I have to present it, the solution would be convert to QT movie but again keynote doesn't handle it.

I'm very disappointed with keynote, I wasn't expecting this malfunction at all.
What should I do?

Any bad experiences with keynote as well?

Windows On Mac :: Handling Maxed Out Screen Resolution

Oct 29, 2009

This morning I installed Windows 7 Upgrade ($30 student price) from XP running via boot camp on my 2007 24" iMac. I had to do the clean install, but it worked flawlessly. I ran the bootcamp setup from the Snow Leopard disk (3.0) and it installed fine. My problem is the screen resolution. My resolution is maxed out at 1280x1024. Windows 7 handles this nicely, though, by simply putting the desktop in the middle of the display with black space around it (it could have stretched it out and made it really bad). I'm not sure what to do, since the driver is installed properly (ATI, RadeonHD2600). I'm also trying to run dual-screens, and that doesn't seem to work either. All these things worked perfectly on XP.

Applications :: Aperture Handling Large Amount Of Files

Sep 1, 2010

If in aperture i have a folder/album with say 60GB of pics in (from one event, RAW pics). Then i have say 10 labelled with 5*.

If i load the folder only showing 5* pics, will it load immanently, or will it have to scan through all 60GB to find the *ed pictures.

At the moment, using Adobe Bridge on my old PC, it takes ages (hence why i separate them into 2 folders once sorted). I was hoping that aperture would just load the *ed ones if you tell it to and not have to look through all the files each time. (Bridge loads them, then sorts them).

Also, about stacks. i take lots of time lapses (frame by frame) so i end up with lots of similar pictures. If i had a stack with a few thousand pictures in, would aperture handle this well? If i had an album with 3 stacks in, each with 5000 pics in, will the album load quick, and only when i open a stack it take longer to load.

ITunes 10.6 Handling Of 'Prefer Standard Definition Video'

Mar 9, 2012

Setup:iTunes 10.6 on a MacMini3,1iPhone 4S 64GB VZW1st Gen iPad 64GB WiFi only..In iTunes, on the summary screen for both my iPhone and iPad the checkbox for "Prefer standard definition video" is selected (enabled). Under Movies I have Sync Movies and manually select which movies to copy to my iOS device.Under TV Shows I have "Automaticly include [the 3 oldest] episodes of [selected shows]" enabled. With any version of iTunes prior to 10.6 this presented no problems. If I had only a SD version of a movie of TV Show, that was copied. If I had both a SD and HD video of the same movie or TV show, iTunes would select the SD version and copy it to the device. If I had only a HD verion of the TV Show iTunes would happily copy the HD content to the device. After upgrading to iTunes 10.6 I noticed that a lot of my TV shows went missing from my devices. After a lot of poking around what I found is that with the "Prefer standard definition video" option enabled, iTunes will no longer sync any HD content to either device. It would only select SD material to copy.It would appear that Apple changed the way that iTunes handles the "prefer standard definition videos" to mean "only include standard definition videos".

MacBook Air :: VMWare Or Parallels - Best Option To Go With?

Dec 25, 2010

I've just got a 13" 1.86GHz with 4GB RAM. I'm wondering which is the best option to go with. I've been using VMWare up until now as my Hackintosh does not support intel-VTx or whatever. I think parallels looks much better, but don't know how it is with performance. So does anyone have experience using both on their machine and can recommend either one? I'm looking for best performance mostly as I run in single window and not Unity.

MacBook Pro :: VMware Performance Boost With More RAM?

Sep 18, 2009

I run a late '08 15" UMBP. 2.53, 4 gigs of RAM.

Would upgrading to 6 gigs of RAM increase the performance of my machine when running VMware with Vista? I can't get any answers in any of the other threads.

I know about Bootcamp, that's not my question. I have another pc.

I use Windows for Lectora Publisher, which is an authoring software for online learning modules. It's basically interactive PowerPoint. It's not a super heavy software, but the content can get heavy with video, sound, animations, etc.

My Activity Monitor says I'm using nearly 4gigs when I open VMware and a few of my Mac apps, but don't actually load those apps with content: (Keynote, audacity, acorn, draw it, quicktime)

Would upgrading even help since I'll lose dual channel? I know nothing about how RAM benefits machines aside from higher numbers = good.

MacBook Pro :: VMware Fusion Take The Battery On The 13" ?

Jul 13, 2009

I fire up VMware fusion to run Outlook 2007 -- I originally thought this was the greatest thing since sliced bread. What I've noticed, however, is the MBP gets noticeably warmer on the back left quadrant, and battery levels drop significantly. As soon as I close the VM, I can tell the machine cooling off and battery performance looks better. Is this just me or are other people noticing this? I do think the overall VMware fusion + outlook integration is awesome, but I think it might just have to hold out until Snow Leopard.

MacBook Pro :: SSD And TRIM Command Possible With Bootcamp/VMWare?

Jan 23, 2010

Im not quite sure if this has been mentioned before, but I was wondering if the TRIM command would be functional if I was to run Windows 7 via VMware or bootcamp?

I know Snow Leopard does not support TRIM and Windows 7 does, so I was hoping as a workaround to this issue, I would run windows 7 on vmware and maybe reap the benefits of TRIM support in Windows 7? I do on occasion use Windows 7 via VMware, so I'm not only considering installing it for just the TRIM command function.

MacBook Pro :: Using 13" - Best Spec For VMWare Fusion 3?

Apr 19, 2010

Am keen to get a 13" MacBook Pro, but not sure which spec to get. There is quite a price jump (250 GBP) between the basic spec and the high spec, and the only difference is the processor speed (2.66Hz vs 2.4GHz) and a larger HDD. Is the difference in performance really worth the price jump?

I want to run Windows XP via VMWare Fusion 3, specifically to run software for academic work, namely Windows MS Office 2007, Endnote, SPSS and GraphPad Prism. I will use Mac OS X for everything else, namely internet, email, iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie.
