Also I made sure when I bought the hard drive that it was both windows and mac compatible...

i have a macbook 2.0 unibody. i just bought 500Gb internal hard drive and i want to replace the stock 160Gb with it. how do i move all my stuff from my old drive to the new one? i don't have the cash to buy an external hard drive just so i can move my stuff back and forth, i will have no need for an external right now since i have a 500Gb internal. someone told me to get an HDD caddy and use the stock drive as an external. what i am wondering is, will i be able to transfer all my applications without having the install files (i deleted all my install files as soon as i installed them). is it going to be a simple "drag and drop" kind of deal and every file knows exactly where to go? i just don't know what complications might come about.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm in the "waiting for Arrandale" camp and am considering one of the intel SSD's. All of the reviews suggest updating the firmware. I'm not too experienced with computers and would like some information on what that process involves. Aside from that, I would also like to know the easiest way to transfer the files on the default HDD to the SSD. I will likely use the SSD as the main drive (i don't use too many files), and the HDD for additional storage. So questions...1. If anyone knows of any walkthroughs of how to update the firmware and get the SSD up and running, could you give me some links?2. What is the best way to transfer all of the default stuff on the HDD to the SSD? I've heard this being referred to as "cloning" the HDD and would appreciate the best ways to do it, any necessary programs, etc.

This might be a dumb question, but I will be selling my current 13" 2.4 GHz MacBook for the new 13" MBP. How can I transfer all of my pictures onto the new computer? Do I need an external hard drive or something, since I will be selling this computer?
Also, all of my iTunes stuff won't get deleted, will it?
I have just bought my first iMac. Superb - even though I'm only scratching the surface of what it can do at this stage. Is it possible to record stuff from a VCR onto the Mac? I've got some family videos from 20 years ago I need to get on DVD's eventually - but first need to get them transferred onto the Mac. If it possible - how do I do it?

I just noticed that I cant bring up my music/tvshows/movies from my itunes library (from my mac) on my ipad. I checked all the home sharing setting on the mac and on the ipad, restarted everything, to no avail! My apple tv works fine! I recently updated my OS on the iMac to 10.7.4, would this cause the issue? I am running 5.1.1 on the ipad.

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive

Is it bad for Macs to leave them on a long time when you're not using it?
My nephew once told me he puts his PC off when he goes to school for example, because it would be better for his pc.
Does this count for...
- My PowerBook, running on cable (not battery, whatever)?
- My (to buy) 24'' iMac?
Reason is I sometimes want to leave my stuff on to upload or download stuff...
Is there an easy way to transfer files to my external HD and have the files automatically removed from my Start Up Disk when it is done? Bottom line, all of my iTunes stuff, movies, is sucking up my Start Up Disk...I want them to be moved to the external Hard Drive and off the Start Up Disk. I just redirected my storage location for iTunes, but now want them off the Start Up disk but am obvously worried about losing them all..

I have an iomega external HD. When ever I try to transfer files from my mac internal HD I get the message "the Item could not be moved because "iomega HDD" cannot be modified." This HD works fine with windows, but is doesn't seem compatible with my mac. Any way to fix?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am going to get an MBP 17" in 1 month time (first Mac) and I would like to get an external hard drive for backup & media storage.
My media files are on a desktop PC and, as I am also about to move to a different country, it would be ideal for me to do the following:
1) get the external drive and transfer files from PC to the drive now
2) take it with me and connect it to MBP when I get the Mac
As mentioned, I have never owned a Mac and all the stuff I find on the internet relates to transferring files from PC to Mac. Is it possible to transfer those files to the Mac drive "in absence" of the MBP?

To make more space on my 2010 macbook air (OS 10.9.4) I purchased a Toshiba 1TB external hard drive (formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). To free space I placed a large folder onto it, and also set up Time Machine. When I plugged it in a few days later, I get error messages saying that time machine backups failed (but they seem to be there) and I get the following when trying to move any other file from the computer to the hard drive: Modifying “HARD DRIVE” requires an administrator name and password. which it seems to initially accept the one I have for the computer, but then I get: The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).

I have a quick question that maybe you guys can help me with. I used to store all my music on an external drive, but now that I got a Mac I decided to just save them on the internal drive. When I select the External drive and Copy the files to transfer somewhere along the lines it gives me an error and pretty much the transfer Stalls(the transfer window stays open but nothing is being moved) and it wont close or nothing unless I restart. I really don't know what file is corrupt or anything, Is there a software I can get to make this process easier? I am trying to transfer over 100gb of music Via USB.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Western Digital 1TB My Book Essential Edition external hard drive. I have a lot of videos, stored as disk images, from my HD camcorder on my MacBook that I want to copy onto the external hard drive for storage and also transfer to my other MacBook. The problem is that this hard drive is setup so that it will not transfer any file over 4 GB. A lot of these disk images are over 4GB and thus will not transfer. Is there any way to reformat this external HD to a system that will allow transfer over the 4GB threshold? If so, can someone please explain the process to me in as much detail as possible? If not, can someone recommend an external HD that does not have transfer limits?

I have been trying to figure this out all day and it has been driving me nuts. First of all I have a Macbook with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of RAM and am running Mac OS X Version 10.5.6. Also this is the last generation of the "white" macbook that came out in February I believe of last year.
My external HD is a 1TB Rock Mobile Disk. For some reason when I try to transfer files to or from the external HD to my Mac I am getting nowhere near the expected 480MB/s. I do use a Swiss Gear 4-port USB splitter. When I use the splitter I am getting a transfer rate of about 120MB/s and without it I am only getting about 300MB/s. This is of course if I am only trying to transfer one 800MB movie. If I attempt to transfer multiple seasons of television shows it will drop to as low as 40-50MB/s. Also, if I were to be transferring a single season of a TV show. The transfer speed is much faster to click and drag every episode from my HD to my Mac than it is to transfer the entire folder at once. The whole folder might take 25 minutes but one at a time it will only take about 5.
Our family has had a Mac for about a year and recently we started getting warnings about space and Startup Disk getting full. We have a 250GB drive and and have about 30GB free. Movies are taking up 121GB and Pictures 31GB. We want to move the iMovie files off the laptop after we create a DVD of our sons basketball season. Recently my wife deleted files by going to iPhoto and selected multiple files and then pressed OPTION + COMMAND + DELETE, to remove them. Afterwards iPhoto said it was updating library and was scanning like up to 84K of items. We only had a library of 6K items. Once complete it did finally show about 1k items left. I would really like to copy files to USB rather than delete them. Help, how do you move these files to USB?

I had to get a new hard drive put into my macbook pro because it was failing. So, I moved all my data onto an external hard drive so I would not lose anything. But now I cannot get iphoto or imovie back onto my computer. It says I cannot open it because it is a time machine back up. I don't want to have to purchase iPhoto and iMovie again just because I had to replace my hard drive.

I have a Belkin USB hub with 4 slots. I was trying to transfer some movies to an external drive. It said it'd take 7 hours. When I connected the drive directly to my laptop, it took 5 minutes. I'm wondering if there is a better hub to use or if this one is just defective.

Musics
Do I have to sacrifice my music library?
What if I transfer my musics to the external storage and download it into Itunes?
Does it mean I have to connect the external storage everytime I connect my Ipod?
Or I can only choose a certain amount of songs to put in?.
