MacBook Pro :: Transfer IPhoto And IMovie Files To External USB?
Feb 19, 2012
Our family has had a Mac for about a year and recently we started getting warnings about space and Startup Disk getting full. We have a 250GB drive and and have about 30GB free. Movies are taking up 121GB and Pictures 31GB. We want to move the iMovie files off the laptop after we create a DVD of our sons basketball season. Recently my wife deleted files by going to iPhoto and selected multiple files and then pressed OPTION + COMMAND + DELETE, to remove them. Afterwards iPhoto said it was updating library and was scanning like up to 84K of items. We only had a library of 6K items. Once complete it did finally show about 1k items left. I would really like to copy files to USB rather than delete them. Help, how do you move these files to USB?

I downloaded photos from my camera to iphoto which included some videos. The video files appear in iphoto but i want to transfer them to imovie. However when I tried to do this - a message in the imovie program says there are no video files to see. When I tried to transfer them through the share option, which opened my photo albums but only the photos appear not the videos. Can someone please tell me how to transfer the video files from iphoto into imovie.

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive

My MacBook Pro has run out of space. Now I want to "Move" all of my iMovie files to my newly purchased Time Capsule. (Guy in store said wouldn't be a problem) I already have proceeded with the standaard Time mashine backedup (Which took ages even through cable) and now I want to move stuff. So I have iMovie 09; Mac OS X 10.6.8; and a new 2T Time Capsule (and why is Time Capsule showing up as "Data" with yellow triangle in iMovie under Hard Disks)

Is there an easy way to transfer files to my external HD and have the files automatically removed from my Start Up Disk when it is done? Bottom line, all of my iTunes stuff, movies, is sucking up my Start Up Disk...I want them to be moved to the external Hard Drive and off the Start Up Disk. I just redirected my storage location for iTunes, but now want them off the Start Up disk but am obvously worried about losing them all..

I am going to get an MBP 17" in 1 month time (first Mac) and I would like to get an external hard drive for backup & media storage.
My media files are on a desktop PC and, as I am also about to move to a different country, it would be ideal for me to do the following:
1) get the external drive and transfer files from PC to the drive now
2) take it with me and connect it to MBP when I get the Mac
As mentioned, I have never owned a Mac and all the stuff I find on the internet relates to transferring files from PC to Mac. Is it possible to transfer those files to the Mac drive "in absence" of the MBP?

To make more space on my 2010 macbook air (OS 10.9.4) I purchased a Toshiba 1TB external hard drive (formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). To free space I placed a large folder onto it, and also set up Time Machine. When I plugged it in a few days later, I get error messages saying that time machine backups failed (but they seem to be there) and I get the following when trying to move any other file from the computer to the hard drive: Modifying “HARD DRIVE” requires an administrator name and password. which it seems to initially accept the one I have for the computer, but then I get: The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).

I have a quick question that maybe you guys can help me with. I used to store all my music on an external drive, but now that I got a Mac I decided to just save them on the internal drive. When I select the External drive and Copy the files to transfer somewhere along the lines it gives me an error and pretty much the transfer Stalls(the transfer window stays open but nothing is being moved) and it wont close or nothing unless I restart. I really don't know what file is corrupt or anything, Is there a software I can get to make this process easier? I am trying to transfer over 100gb of music Via USB.

My G5 is completely full. Can I transfer my iphoto contents to an external HD? Using Time Machine won't help because it only backs up my photos so I can't add more to my iphoto library.
Or, is there a way to make iphoto an external HD application so the photos are only stored ion the external HD?

How do I transfer image files from a MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.4) to an external USB hard drive? I do not see a way to create a new folder to put these images in first and I do not see an option to send them to the external drive when I right-click on the iphoto app they exist in now.

I am transferring my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and it is agonizingly slow.
I am attempting to make room on our iMac so am moving our 193 GB iPhoto library to our Seagate 2TB external hard drive. The drive is brand new AND is formated properly as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the current copy estimate is for it be completed in over 80 hours. I dont beleive the drive is broken as data is continuing to be transferred and not completely hung up.
When I transfer other folders/files the process is much much faster. Problem only seems to be with iPhoto library that I have found.

I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc. The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows. My mac will open it, but it is "read only." I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!

OS 10.5.8 and iMovie 8. From a Windows background and still learning the Mac OS. Have started loading movies in iMovie which is eating into disk space pretty quick so i want to move the uploaded and edited product to an external drive. Is it possible to have all my movie files on the external and the iMovie program set to read them from the external when required? If so how would i go about that?

I have an iMac that is rapidly filling up. I would like to move my iTunes and iPhoto library to my external harddrive (I currently use for Time Machine). Is this possible or even adviseable? If I were to do this, what would I need to do. Is it as simple as moving the folders that hold these files on to the external. Would the programs find them.

So, I have all of my imovie projects backed up on my external harddrive, as well as the imovie program. I accidentally deleted all of the imovie projects and events from the imovie application on my laptop. When I try to re-import the imovie files into imovie, it doesn't recognize the files. I have tried to convert them with iSkySoft Video Converter. That converter program does not recognize the files either. I also tried burning the files onto a disc and then pulling them off the disc with the Handbrake program. This doesn't work either. I also tried importing the files into iMovie HD, which I have on my desktop, but to no avail. Are these files alll useless now? I'm at my wits end because I have spent literally months compiling footage for a documentary.

About a month ago I bought a G-Tech 500 GB G Drive. It is formatted for a mac and has worked fine until yesterday. At first it would not stay mounted. I would have it connected and after a few min would disapear off the desktop and I would get a message saying it was improperlly removed and whatnot. Also when that was going on there would be trash in the trash bin whenever I connected it and it would not let me empty it. I then unplugged my power cord and turned it off for a good 20 min. Since then I haven't gotten those issuses again. At that point I was able to do stuff such as listen to music on iTunes, as I have ALL of my music on the external drive. However when I would try to move anything to the drive I would get one of a few errors. The first being along the lines of " file cant be transferred because the file name is too long". Another one I can remember was "cant be transferred because one or more of these files cant be read/written - error 36". I was using the firewire hookup so I tried the USB and got the same results. The only thing I did yesterday before all this was do a software update, since I hadn't in a little while, and I repaired permissions on my internal drive. I also fiddled with the security settings a little. Im thinking something I did there messed everything up? Im lost here I feel like I've tried everything. Losing all the files on that drive and reformating it isnt an option here since i would lose everything and pretty much have no use for the drive anymore.

My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified". So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?

I pretty much made the switch to all MAC a few months ago. I have a few external drives that i use with Media players and they prefer and work better when formatted to NTFS problem is, MACs can only read and write to FAT32. I have Windows 7 on my macbook ( though my movie collection is on my iMac ) via bootcamp, so that isn't a option. I heard and read about some programs and what not.. but what is the fastest and easiest way to transfer files from my iMac to a NTFS formatted HD? I have movies ( some over 4gb in size ) on my iMac.

I have an IMAC and I am having problems transferring video files I download to my external hard drive. I had trouble playing the files at first because it was not readable with Quicktime. I downloaded VPN and it played with VPN. I don't want to save those files on my computer so I would like to transfer it to my external harddrive. When I try to drag it over, it won't let me drop it in. I am new to the MAC world. Is there a way to choose where it will save itself right before you download like there is on windows. I click on it and it does not prompt you, it just starts downloading.
