MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive - Unable To Appear

Oct 21, 2009

My powerbook froze up yesterday and I was forced to shut it down. Upon restarting it, I received the flashing question mark folder. I restarted again holding down the option key.

When the blue screen came up to select destination the hard drive icon was missing. I am attempting to reinstall the startup OSX disk but have ended up at a dead end, there is no destination for the program to go.

I am beginning to really worry now, does this mean my hard drive is gone. If I purchase a new computer will there be a way to retrieve what was on my powerbook?

MacBook :: Unable To Locate My Hard Drive / Unable To Rename Or Create Partition

Jan 7, 2009

After my macbook hard drive kindly failed on me, I ordered a new Seagate Momentus 5400.5, 320gb hard drive. I popped that sucker in this afternoon and began to start up my macbook with the OS X disc 1. Everything was going smoothly, except that it can't find the hard drive. It is recognized under my disk utility, but when I click to partition it, select options, select GUID, click 'OK', I can neither Name it 'Macintosh HD' or do anything else.

I can't proceed with anything because when it asks me to select a HD, the HD does not show up. Again, everything works except that the hard drive is not found. I pulled the hard drive out. Made sure the screws were alright. Made sure everything was all snuggly, and yet it still won't work.

Hardware :: Recover Data From Dead Lacie Hard Drive / Unable To Mount Hard Drive

Sep 6, 2009

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.

Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.

Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.

I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Not Working / Logic Board Unable To Communicate With Hard Drive

Sep 9, 2009

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.

The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Boot Off External Hard Drive?

May 4, 2012

Two years ago I installed Leopard on a pair of striped Fantom Hard Drives (3TBs) via Firewire 800, and have been running my 2007 Macbook Pro off it ever since. When Snow Leopard came out, I updated it with no problems. When Lion came out, again no problems. Last month I bought a CalDigit VR2 with dual hard drives (4TBs) specifically built for running OS externally. But no matter how I configure, install, or connect... it will not boot up my Macbook Pro, or my Macbook Air.

Last week I bought a new Fantom external hard drive (1.5TBs) and discovered the same exact issue, with one exception... the Fantom will boot the Macbook Pro via USB 2.0, but only when plugged into the left side port.

Has anyone else noticed this change?

P.S. I've talked to the people at CalDigit, Fantom, and Apple, and no one seems to have an answer.

MacBook Air :: Unable To Restore Internal Hard-drive?

Jun 6, 2012

I have the Macbook Air, purchased last year, the version that did not come with any USB or disk containing the OSX software. Apparently in this version, the solution to restoring Mac OSX lies within the actual mac, there being a partition or something for this purpose. I saw this online, and if this really is the case, i'm quite sure i accidentally deleted it. Sigh.

I have an external hard drive i have copies of all my data on it luckily with 500gb that i use as a start up disk a lot because of the extra memory. I created this using the disk utility method. I was trying to get the boot camp program running on my internal hard drive, and ran into the ol' "need atlas 10gb of free memory space" no matter what i deleted. I copied and pasted all the important things onto my external and restarted my Mac on it. I heard the solution was to simply back up your data, wipe it, download boot camp, then restore everything. Unfortunately i simply wiped my Macintosh HD internal hard drive, and my computer no longer recognises it as a start up disk! Whenever i try to start up using it, i simply get a blank screen with a question mark. When i look at its contents using my external, theres absolutely nothing there. I was up all night online looking for a way to fix this, and nothing seemed to be working, I can remote install it, but i can only get hold of another computer to do this next week and i'd like another alternate solution.

I'm pretty sure i removed Mac OSX from my internal hard drive. The thing is, my mac runs off of my external just fine, so this must have OSX running ok. I'm wondering if i can somehow use this to fix up my internal. The solution i want is to simply be able to run my mac book with out my external hard drive; this being currently impossible.

MacBook :: Unable To Copy Video Larger Than 4gb / Hard Drive Not Allowing

Sep 14, 2010

I'm trying to put a 10gb sized video onto my hard drive but it won't allow me. I don't want to format it for 2 reasons.

1) i don't have space to back up and

2) the purpose of putting it on the hard drive is so I can watch the video through my blu ray player's usb port.

in disk utility, if i erase and use a volume format other than ms-dos (fat), the blu ray player doesn't pick p on the drive.

OS X :: Unable To Partition Hard Drive

Jun 30, 2010

I just bought a new Western Digital 750GB laptop drive for my 13" macbook pro. I have a transcend external enclosure, to hook it up as an external via usb, and I had planned on using CCC to clone my existing 250gb to the new drive, and then swapping them.

However, at first plugging the drive in, my MBP didn't see it at all. The lights came on, and the drive sounded like it started... but it didn't appear in disk utility.

I unscrewed it from the enclosure, and then re-attached everything, and the 2nd time around, this time my MBP saw the drive. So it's possible (I guess) that something wasn't fully connected in the enclosure.

My first action was to open disk utility and try to partition the drive. But when I chose the "1 partition" route, I got an error when it attempted to unmount the drive, and wouldn't let me continue. So I then opted to "erase" the drive, and it did that no problem.

Then I did a "verify" on the disk, and it again reported no problem. So just for giggles, I then attempted to "partition" the drive again, and voila, same error.

OS X :: Unable To Mount Lacie 500 GB Hard Drive?

Jul 26, 2009

I am new to this forum and hoping for some advice with this hard drive issue.

I opened a brand new Lacie 500 GB Hard Drive. It is connected to my macbook via usb. I selected it as my hard drive destination in Time Machine and ran the backup option.

The hard drive did mount. About 5 minutes in the backup option failed - a time machine error: time machine backup failed.

I ejected the drive and unplugged it/turned it off and rebooted my laptop. Now the hard drive does not mount on my desktop however will show in disk utility. It lists with the Lacie name and another subdivision under the name.

When I try disk repair, erase or partition..I always get the same message: resource busy. After the error, the hard drive subdivision disappears leaving only one name on the list in disk utility. (It does not have the name underneath it).

I apologize for my semi technical description. I am new to mac and appreciate any advice on how to fix this issue. All I want to do is backup my laptop using the new hard drive with time machine.

When it came time to choose the destination drive, none showed up. I then went to Disk Utility. The drive and the volume showed up in the left panel but I could not Erase or do anything else - all the options were grayed out. With no firewire port I am also unable to use target mode.

OS X :: Unable To Change Hard Drive To GUID

Oct 4, 2009

I am trying to install the Snow Leopard upgrade on my MacBook (Mac OS 10.5 Leopard), and I can't seem to do it because it tells me to change my partition scheme table to GUID. I went into disk utilities and clicked on the "partition" tab, but I can't click on the "options" button. I cannot erase my hard disk either. What could be the problem?

Just in case this is important: I changed my 160GB original HD to one of those WD passport HDs. So now my internal HD is the 500GB WD passport HD.

I already backed up my HD onto an external HD using Time Machine, but I cannot erase my internal (WD) HD

Desktops :: External Hard Drive Unable To Mount

Jan 20, 2010

Without warning my iMac [OS X Snow Leopard] popped up an alert saying that I should eject a drive before disconnecting it. I had done nothing to generate this error message. I clicked ok to close it and noticed my 4 month old, external 8T Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 was no longer visible in my drive directory. I also noticed this external unit was making a looped grinding noise as if it was trying to write without success. I figured one of the drives failed and took it to the mac doctor. Other than a few directory errors, everything appeared to be fine, so I paid the service fee, brought it home and plugged it in only to find the same prob - obviously it's something with my iMac. Before I go spending more service fees, I wondered if anyone here could point me toward a method of discovering what might be wrong. I ran disk utility [verify and permissions] and fixed some directory errors, but don't know how to look further. iMac was home networked with a PC [Windows] and a laptop [Windows]. I did notice something wacky with the PC, but its very old and I expect it to die any day. I was running the network through the PC, so I direct connected the iMac to the router and modem but no change: still cannot see the external drives. What other info do you need to make an educated guess for me?

IMac :: Unable To Transfer From External Hard Drive

Jan 12, 2011

My new iMac is arriving tomorrow and I need to transfer everything over to it. I know about Migration Assistant, but I want to know if there will be any complications due to the data I have on an external hard drive.

Specifically, I currently have an older (white) iMac hooked up to two 2TB external hard drives. One if for backup but the other one has all my iPhoto and iTunes content on it, including about 1.5 TB of movies and TV shows that I have ripped. None of this material is on the computer's internal hard drive - it is all on the external hard drive.

Because my new iMac has a 2 TB internal hard drive, I want to transfer all the iPhoto and iTunes content currently on the external hard drives onto the internal hard drive of the new iMac. Will Migration Assistant handle this and will it be clear what I need to do?
