I have a G3 Blue. It has been upgraded with a new hard drive and memory. I am currently on 10.4.9 I think. This morning the computer was making an odd noise and I had to reboot it. When it came up the old hard drive from 3 years ago was the only one I could access. How can I get to the new hard drive again?

I'm using a 1.42ghz Macmini running 10.4.11. I've been using a Lacie 500 G firewire external hard drive for over a year to store and retrieve files. I have several movies in the mp4 format stored on the Lacie external hard drive. I recently opened one of the movies in full screen (quicktime). It ran for about 10 minutes before freezing up. I watched the spinning beach ball for about 5 minutes. Unable to force quit Quicktime, I pulled the plug on the Macmini. After restarting the computer, the icon for the Lacie external hard drive no longer appeared on the desktop.
I tried several different things to get the icon back, including: repairing the permissions and shutting down the external drive and unplugging the power supply for several minutes before reconnecting the external drive to the computer. The external drive doesn't show up in either the System Profiler or Disk Utilities.
Okay. So I had an Imac G5 (white) running 10.4 This one crashed and I got a new iMac G5 (Silver). Since then I have removed the old hard drive. Today I connected it to a Serial ATA - USB Converter. It powers up and sounds to be working fine (hums, spinning) but my new computer says "Disk is unreadable". It gives me the option to format, but I want to recover my old files first.
Important: I also have a similar Lacie external drive that I hooked up the same way and it worked fine. I was able to take the files off of it.
My guess: I believe when the drive is connected, it is trying to start up the OS (this was the start up disc). It has that click sound like it's trying to make the chime and then spinning like it's working. Can you change the drive to a "Slave"? Or is my disc corrupted?
I cannot believe I am actually in this position, but I accidentally reformatted my lacie 1TB external HD. The files were not overwritten as it was the most basic and quick format option, but they are not accessible.
Can anyone recommend a good data recovery app that works for OS X?
Anyone know what the best course of action would be?

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.
My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?
I know this is going to be an incredibly easy fix, but I can't find it. The Hard Drive on my new iMac is not appearing on my desktop, nor is it appearing in the "Device" menu in Finder.
When I sold my old desktop PC i took out the SATA hard drive (WD1600JS). My question is how can I access that drive without buying a external drive enclosure? What cables will I need? I just want to hook it up and see what's on it and completely erase the drive so I can give it away. I don't even have to see what's on it, i'm more concerned with erase the info. I have access to a PC at work if this has to be done with a PC and not my MBP
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro that used Lion. The computer's software crashed and wouldn't start up, so I took it to my local Apple repair store to get it fixed. They said they could pull all my files and data from my computer, since the hard drive was fine, and that they would reinstall it on my hard drive when they reset my computer. When I got my computer back and when through the initial set up and start up steps, I selected the option to retrieve data from a disk on my computer. My computer spent seven hours just searching for the disk, so I finally decided to ignore the data that's supposedly located somewhere on my computer, and just set the machine up again.
I set up my computer and realized that the Apple repair store reset or reinstalled Snow Leopard instead of Lion. I'm not sure how much a difference the OS makes, but now Migration Assistant can't find the other disk in my hard drive that has all my old data on it. I'm in a country that doesn't have actual Apple stores or Apple support systems in place

I was partitioning an external storage drive with iPartition and ipartition stopped and said it couldn't complete its task and now I am stuck with a drive I cannot access, or rather I cannot access the data that is on it. Drive is greyed out in disk utility. It was not written over however, which I am hoping is a good thing.I have little to no experience with data recovery so some advice on what app to use would be swell.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter my macbook hard drive kindly failed on me, I ordered a new Seagate Momentus 5400.5, 320gb hard drive. I popped that sucker in this afternoon and began to start up my macbook with the OS X disc 1. Everything was going smoothly, except that it can't find the hard drive. It is recognized under my disk utility, but when I click to partition it, select options, select GUID, click 'OK', I can neither Name it 'Macintosh HD' or do anything else.
I can't proceed with anything because when it asks me to select a HD, the HD does not show up. Again, everything works except that the hard drive is not found. I pulled the hard drive out. Made sure the screws were alright. Made sure everything was all snuggly, and yet it still won't work.
Is it possible to lock my second internal hard drive to only allow myself access. I use it as a back up but don't want the second user to delete any files from it.

I installed a 128MG SSD, which is too small for storing my iTunes library. My iTunes library is on a second hard drive (my Mac Pro has four internal hard drives). I went to iTunes Preferences. Under Advanced Preferences "iTunes Media folder location" I selected my second hard drive and found my iTunes folder. But iTunes continues to show only the (few) songs on my SSD, without the (many) songs or playlists from my second hard drive. How do I get iTunes to shows the songs and playlists from the iTunes folder on my second hard drive?

Up till 9 months ago I was using a PC where I stored my iTunes library on my external drive to save space. Since getting a MAC I have been able to direct my library storage to the external drive. I can play the tunes individually but cannot access them.

I have a good deal of sensitive data and files stored (and aliased) on my second internal drive that I do not care for 'guest' users to stumble upon. How can I restrict access to the secondary storage hard drive from my Guest login account, and/or just plain hide it from it? Surely, there is a need for this that has brought about a solution.
I recently bought a MacBook Air (my first Mac) - love it. Also bought a time capsule and have backed up onto it. I can't however access the hard drive on the time capsule, no matter how I try. It doesn't even allow access to the sparsebundle file that I see people describe.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEverytime I try to click on my external hard drive it closes the window. I have two identical WD MyBook 250GB drives. Both are FAT 32 formatted. I can access one of them fine from my Macbook. The other displays its icon, but as soon as I click on it, it opens a window, then closes it again. I can access the drive via a PC. I purchased a replacement hard drive (LaCie mobile disk 500GB) which worked fine until I transferred the data at which point the same thing started happening with the new drive.
I ran a Bit Defender scan on the hard drive and the only thing that turned up was an "Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen" file buried inside Adobe Acrobat. Bit Defender couldn't quarantine or disinfect the file so I deleted the copy of Acrobat but the drive still won't mount. I have a Macbook running OS X 10.4.11 and a 2 Ghz Intel processor.
I purchased a first generation 15'' MacBook Pro. My hard drive had crashed, so I backed up all my information and installed a new hard drive. Everything worked fine for about two weeks until the contact area between my power cord and the computer started to smoke. I've no longer been able to turn on my computer. I've had strange issues with my non-warrantied MacBook--including having to replace the battery four times over my three years of owning it and twice having to replace my power adapter (as it literally caught fire twice).

This morning the computer was making an odd noise and wouldn't move off the screen saver mode. I rebooted. When it came back up, the odd noise was there for a minute or so and then stopped. However, it will only access the original hard drive, which I haven't saved anything on for 3 years. How can I find my secondary hard drive? Incidently I wasn't able to access the old hard drive for about 2 years. Sure it would be nice if i could access the both of them but i just want my new one back!! I live in a small town where no one is mac proficient. I replaced the power unit a year ago myself.
