I have a Lacie External Hard Drive that I had been using with my Windows system.
Now, I decided to transfer some of my stuffs from my MBP to this Lacie External, however, it won't allow me. It keeps giving me warning that "Lacie External Hard Drive Cannot be modified".
I had tried to modify the "Lock" property from "Get Info" but its option is grayed out.. I am unable to change it..
New IMac user. When I bought my imac I explained to the guy in the shop that I'd always been a PC and didn't want to loose everything I had amassed in the past 20 odd years. He sold me a Seagate 1T external hard drive and told me to rip everything off my PC and transfer it to my Mac, so far, so good. The problem I have is that I cannot delete, modify or add to the external hard drive, I can only view it and copy items.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't really use automatic backup method, because I have a few computers in the network that I go back and forth. I used a Windows based syncing program to sync all computers of Documents, Music, Photos, etc., but it went corrupt. So I'm not gonna use that method anymore.
I don't like automatic backups because I need to access the only specific files from an external hard drive. When I modify a file and put it into an external hard drive, "Date Modified" section does not change. Which worries me that the drive is corrupt. (The drive was originally used on a Windows machine.) Before I go any further in backup my files, I want to format it based on a Mac since it's primary OS.
How should I go about this?
Is there a different format for Mac and Windows drives?
I want to start from scratch.
I still need to use it between two OSs.
I have an external 750GB hard drive that I previously formatted as FAT 32 because I wanted to be able to plug it into Windows computers as well. I was not very thoughtful at the beginning and I just created one big 750GB partition. I currently have 450GB used and about 300GB free.
I would like to create a new partition in the free space without losing the data I have in the disk, and format the new partition as Mac OS Extended to use it for Time Machine backups. Presumably Disk Utility can do it, but when I go to the "Partition" tab it says "This partition cannot be modified" and the "+" sign below it is grayed.
How can i modify(delete,paste) the contents on the external hard disk that has an NTFS partition?

Two years ago I installed Leopard on a pair of striped Fantom Hard Drives (3TBs) via Firewire 800, and have been running my 2007 Macbook Pro off it ever since. When Snow Leopard came out, I updated it with no problems. When Lion came out, again no problems. Last month I bought a CalDigit VR2 with dual hard drives (4TBs) specifically built for running OS externally. But no matter how I configure, install, or connect... it will not boot up my Macbook Pro, or my Macbook Air.Â
Last week I bought a new Fantom external hard drive (1.5TBs) and discovered the same exact issue, with one exception... the Fantom will boot the Macbook Pro via USB 2.0, but only when plugged into the left side port. Â
Has anyone else noticed this change? Â
P.S. I've talked to the people at CalDigit, Fantom, and Apple, and no one seems to have an answer.

I've bought a Seagate External Hard Drive, and want to copy my photos from the Macbook Pro to it. Every time I try and copy them, a message appears 'Unable to render file for export' followed by the drive details and a string of numbers. How I should be copying them? I've already accidentally deleted and appear to have permanently lost photos from iCloud, which is why I want a spare copy on an external drive.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWithout warning my iMac [OS X Snow Leopard] popped up an alert saying that I should eject a drive before disconnecting it. I had done nothing to generate this error message. I clicked ok to close it and noticed my 4 month old, external 8T Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 was no longer visible in my drive directory. I also noticed this external unit was making a looped grinding noise as if it was trying to write without success. I figured one of the drives failed and took it to the mac doctor. Other than a few directory errors, everything appeared to be fine, so I paid the service fee, brought it home and plugged it in only to find the same prob - obviously it's something with my iMac. Before I go spending more service fees, I wondered if anyone here could point me toward a method of discovering what might be wrong. I ran disk utility [verify and permissions] and fixed some directory errors, but don't know how to look further. iMac was home networked with a PC [Windows] and a laptop [Windows]. I did notice something wacky with the PC, but its very old and I expect it to die any day. I was running the network through the PC, so I direct connected the iMac to the router and modem but no change: still cannot see the external drives. What other info do you need to make an educated guess for me?

Specifically, I currently have an older (white) iMac hooked up to two 2TB external hard drives. One if for backup but the other one has all my iPhoto and iTunes content on it, including about 1.5 TB of movies and TV shows that I have ripped. None of this material is on the computer's internal hard drive - it is all on the external hard drive.
Because my new iMac has a 2 TB internal hard drive, I want to transfer all the iPhoto and iTunes content currently on the external hard drives onto the internal hard drive of the new iMac. Will Migration Assistant handle this and will it be clear what I need to do?
I was wondering how much external memory an iMac G3 1999 will accept! And I'm looking for an external Hard Drive that uses the built in Firewire 400.

I have a macbook and I am connecting an external hard drive via USB 2.0.
When I want to delete a folder it gives me "error 1407". There is nothing in the folder and it is not protected in any way. It was a folder created by me only a month or so ago. ALL of the folders on my external hard drive are like this. No files are effected with this issue.
Supposedly, the external is in use and cannot be ejected, but i don't think it's in use. I've only recently been encountering this problem, and i have no idea why. I've tried quitting every application, but it still claims to be in use.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have OSX leopard as a disc image on my desktop. When I try to copy the .dmg file over to my external hard drive it copies for a while, then an error message says it can't copy it over and stops. I'm really confused as this sort of problem doesn't usually happen.
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 and I want to install Leopard. The Leopard disc image is 6.66GB.
I can't burn it to a DVD either because the discs I have are 4.7GB & the .dmg is 6.66GB. Do I need to buy a bigger DVD blank disc?
Another question is how I should burn the disc. Should I simply burn the .dmg file straight onto a DVD (if I can get one that is big enough!) using Disc Utility?
I have a Toshiba 250GB external hard drive to back up pictures. I can write to it just fine. I also have a Fantom Drive 1TB external. I could write to it last week, but I turned it on this week and I can't write to it. I can still pull stuff off of it, but I can't write to it. What can be causing this? I have already installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G. It doesn't make sense to me that I can't write to it all of the sudden.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI'm praying someone can give me a miracle cure here but im pretty sure its a terminal case. i have a 24inch iMac 2.66ghz core 2 duo and a western digital 1tb external usb hard drive....this hard drive was bought a month or so ago with the sole purpose of store years and years of media to free up valuable space on my iMac hard drive....tonight without any warning at all the drive icon disappears from my desktop with an error message and now refuses to load, when i click initialise on the error dialogue box it takes me to disk utility.
in disk utility i have tried repairing disk and i get the message "invalid node structure". it then tells me it cannot be repaired and i need to re-format my hard drive.
as i said there is literally YEARS of info on this drive that i really really dont want to lose, is there anything i can do, or anything worth trying. as a side note on the front of the drive it has a capacity gauge and has gone from 3/4's full to not showing anything.
I'm using a 1.42ghz Macmini running 10.4.11. I've been using a Lacie 500 G firewire external hard drive for over a year to store and retrieve files. I have several movies in the mp4 format stored on the Lacie external hard drive. I recently opened one of the movies in full screen (quicktime). It ran for about 10 minutes before freezing up. I watched the spinning beach ball for about 5 minutes. Unable to force quit Quicktime, I pulled the plug on the Macmini. After restarting the computer, the icon for the Lacie external hard drive no longer appeared on the desktop.
I tried several different things to get the icon back, including: repairing the permissions and shutting down the external drive and unplugging the power supply for several minutes before reconnecting the external drive to the computer. The external drive doesn't show up in either the System Profiler or Disk Utilities.
I bought a WD My Book Essential to do Time Machine backups. It is formatted for a PC but I was told I need to format for my IMac before I can use it. How do I do that? Is it a complicated process? I have only been using a Mac for about a year now and am still learning about them.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 100gigs of music so I successfully transferred my iTunes media to an external hard drive, and identified this new location within iTunes/Preferences/Advanced/Location. Everything worked great until I had to shut down and start up.
Now, it no longer recognizes the media library. When I try to play a track in iTunes, iTunes says the original file could not be found. It prompts me to locate this one track, which I do, and that one track will play. All of the other tracks have the (!) sign next to them in my iTunes library.
I have double checked the settings in my iTunes preferences, everything appears to be configured as when I first made the successful transfer (identifying the external hard drive as the location).
I've made sure to restart once the external hard drive is connected.
One of my important external hard drives recently died and I was wondering of there was a way to see a list of files that were on the drive before it crashed, maybe the spotlight index?
Before sending the drive in for recovery (and not attempting to change the logic board myself) I would like to see if there is any private data on the drive that I wouldn't want to fall into the wrong hands.

View 6 Replies View RelatedYesterday I reformatted my Macintosh hard drive, partitioned it, installed Snow Leopard on one partition and Windows 7 on the other. I installed all the drivers for Windows 7 from the Snow Leopard disc.
When I plug in my 1TB Seagate external hardrive it's not showing up in Snow Leopard or Windows 7. Not even in Disk Utility. I tried plugging the external drive into my Windows laptop and a pop-up comes up saying "USB Device Not Recognised. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it." I think that this may just be because it's formatted to Mac OSX?
The hardrive had all of my photos, videos and music on so I hope it's salvageable. I find it hard to believe that the hard drive malfunctioned at the same time I reinstalled the software onto the iMac.
I have looked at a ton of posts on this site and others and find similar problems but cant figure out what is wrong. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I have an Imac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo 3 gigs of ram. I have an Iphoto library that is 190gigs . I have been trying to transfer the library to an external 1 tb hard drive so I can get my computer to run normal again. When I try and transfer the Iphoto library to the external I get a really lame error code. The transfer will start perfect it will get to about 142 gigs complete then the message :"the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "iphoto library" could not be read or written. (error code -36). I have looked up the error code and it seems to be one of those codes that doesn't really tell you anything. At first I thought it was a problem with the external, maybe it was not formatted correctly. Then I tried with an alternate drive I had and the same thing. Just to make sure I took back the original drive. Re formatted the drive only one partition, and mac os extended journaled using GUID partition as suggested by many posts. So I don't believe it is the drive at all I can transfer other files no problem. I have not tried to transfer something as large, but everything else, photos, movies, ect seem to be no problem at all. I really do think now there is something wrong with the library but I don't know what to do. I would love to try and make a copy on the computer itself, but there is not enough room. I think I may need to rebuild the Iphoto library but do not want to lose everything.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having problems ejecting the external hard drive that I use to back up my laptop. It is a 2012 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5. My external hard drive is a WD 2 TB My Book Studio. I use it to back up my laptop with Time Machine. Every time I try to eject my disk now I am told that "The disk (Diskname) wasn't ejected because one or more programs may be using it." I have tried some solutions like to stop Spotlight from indexing the disk and to try and turn off TimeMachine, but neither of these worked. The only thing that has worked so far is to log out of my user name and log back in with a guest user and eject it from there. This takes up a lot of time and is ultimately not really a sustainable way of working on my computer.Â

I have a G5 Imac and a G4 ibook. i want to use time machine, and have one external hard drive connect to both. I could get an external with more than one input (ie, usb and firewire)--does that work? Could i use a usb hub to connect the 2 computers to the HD, and set up different partitions?
And what of NAS? i do not want to set up a whole network (we already have one at my office, and i want this to be independent).
I've got my iTunes Library on an external drive, but for some reason all of my Apps download onto my internal hard-drive, and if I move them onto the external drive they all corrupt.Any suggestions? The music/videos work perfectly.

I received an Acomdata 2Tb external hard drive today from Amazon and plugged it in. Time Machine popped up and I declined to link the hard drive to it. I went into Disk Utility and chose the new hard drive on the left column and went to erase. I chose Mac OS Extended. I named it and hit erase. It started going, and going..... and going... and a half an hour later I knew something was wrong.
Disk Utility was not responding and I eventually had to Force Quit. Now I cannot format the hard drive. I starts and then it stops with a disk error. I tried to run the First Aid verify and repair and both stopped after a few seconds with an error. What do I do?
Recently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.
