MacBook Pro :: Fast Processor To Watch 1080p Movies?
Jul 9, 2009
I want to buy a new MacBook Pro. I was wondering how much profit I would get out of bumping my processor speed. I do a lot of movie encoding or however you call it. (How much faster would it go with a new processor?) How fast a processor do I need to be able to watch 1080p movies natively on the screen (or what other specs)? And on a 24" external display? I'm wondering because on my current build I am not able to watch a 720p movie without the movie jamming every five seconds.

Basically I want to watch high definition videos on my 42" hdtv so I bought the mini display port to hdmi adapter. When I play the videos with VLC I notice choppiness when things move too fast across the screen. Is this a limitation of the hardware (the integrated GPU?) Anyway I can perhaps smooth it out?

Is this normal? When watching a 1080p movie on my mbp, in order for it to play smoothly with no dropped frames etc, I have to close everything except for VLC. I have to close mail, itunes, I mean everything except for VLC. Is this normal? otherwise I will get many dropped frames every 5 min or so.

if anyone here knows the answer reply:
1) Is it theoretically correct the 13'' can't display 1080p hd movies because there aren't enough pixels available?
2) Are 720p movies more suited for the 13''?
3) I'm currently using XBMC and AVS Video Converter, does XBMC perform better on certain video format? I still don't know which video format should i play HD movies on my mac
4) Can the current mbp 15'' play full HD movies (1080p)?
My current convert output setting: HD Video 720p H.264/AVC.

I attempted to google this however I got some mixed results. However I do think that most of the reviews that I was reading was from older Mac Mini models.
I want to get a Mac Mini for a Media Center for my TV. I have alot of iTunes HD TV shows and movies, as well as various Blu-Ray and Downloaded 1080p .mkv rips. I play them fine on my Mac Pro w/ VLC... was wondering how the Latest Gen Mac Mini handles it?

I was wondering if such software exist. I have a mac pro in my home office and would like to also plug a second monitor (HD TV) in the living room. Is there a way for me to see what is showing on the TV? I want to use that instead of streaming to my apple TV in the living room which is unable to play 1080p movies. Of course I don't want to mirror both monitors, I would like to be able to look at my emails in the office while my girlfriend watch a movie.

Apple when they did their press conference for the new Apple TV - specifically stated that previous purchases of movies from iTunes could be updated to 1080p. There was no charge involved, I just needed to redownload them. I wish that were the case. What am I missing? All my preferences state 1080p. Viewing my purchases shows all my movies I can download and pretty much all of them are available in HD. Yet, they are still downloading in SD (720p). Why? Online support/itunes sends me in a loop as far as downloading in 1080p. It never answers the question.
Do I need to re-buy (not going to happen) all my movies in HD to get HD? That wasn't what was stated by Apple.

Basically I can't decided between the 11 inch or 13 inch Air and thats due to the fact of not having any idea if the 11 inch will be capable of handling the tasks that I need. I have a ton of 1080p/720p mkv movies that I always watch on my current early 2006 macbook, that's a must do for my upgrade to an Air. The second part of what I will be doing is having a dump site for my pictures.
I have a T1i and take a ton of photo's nothing professional or anything, but as a poorly touched hobby. I have been considering using iphoto/Aperture since its only 79.99 in the new app store. I am just slightly concerned if the little 11inch can handle simple aperture photo edits, to fix crappily taken photos. The ability to play my movies is the most important issue, the whole picture thing can be sorted out on the Quad core Pc in the office.

I have lots of DVDs, movies, games...that I want to watch on the 21'5 iMac. There will be any problem or bad quality for playing in 720p (HD Ready) instead of Full HD. It will also make a great increase of FPS performance with 4670, no?

I'm thinking of either going for the new 24" LED display or a 32" 1080 television primarily to watch blu-ray movies. The television would be larger but the cinema display would have more utility. From what I've read, the cinema display under bootcamp passes the HDCP test so watching blu-ray movies works. I've noticed that the screen has a 14ms lag though, which seems quiet high when compared to typical lcds, but manufactures calculate this differently. So how is the motion blur on the set? Does anybody here watch blu-ray movies on it? If so how does it compare to a nice television set?

I know this is kind of a weird question but is there a software that will allow me to watch multiple movie files at the same time in the same application. Right now if i want to do that i have to use VLC, Movist and Quicktime all at the same time to do what it is i am trying to do. Wondering if there is an easier way.

I have an emac 700 mhz power pc g4 with 512 mb, running 10.4.11. I cannot watch any video or movies on line. When I play these movies the playback is slow, so the sound is faster than the movies. It looks like I am watching in slow motion. I have everything up to date on this computer.

My wife loves to watch Thai movies and tv shows online. Unfortunately we have had to settle for watching everything in very small windows, as the "full size" options never work. I assume this is because these websites are set up for windows. We currently need to use Flip4Mac to watch these sites. We are using Safari as our browser. Any one have any idea if we would have better luck with another browser, or another video player? I could just install different browsers and video players and try them out, but I was hoping someone may be able to point us in the right direction so we don't have to install, then try and un-install a bunch of stuff, and I certainly don't want to install windows!

I've got a softmodden XBOX (1) with a 500GB HDD wich I mainly use to watch movies on my tv (XBMC). I've got an MacBook and an iPhone wich syncs with the MacBook. Is there any way I can tell my MacBook iTunes library that the mp3's and movies are on a shared map of the XBOX?
What I want is this:
- Watch movies and listen to mp3's on my XBOX with XBMC in the livingroom (already doing that)
- Sync my iPhone with the iTunes on my MacBook with mp3's/movies from the XBOX
- Use an Airport Express in my studyroom with the mp3's on my XBOX
(I'm also planning to use a part of the 500GB XBOX HDD for Time Machine, but that's a different story)
