IMac :: Google Desktop Using Excessive CPU Time

Jan 14, 2009

I bought my current imac in late 07, I have the 2.0 20" with 1GB ram (don't know why I have upgraded) anyway, it seemed my mac was getting slower over time and I didn't really think anything of it. Its my first mac and I figured it was just like a PC in that hardware wares out. But the problem with the slowness wasn't the mac, it was GOOGLE! I downloaded google desktop about 2 months after i got the mac and its been on ever since. I rarely ever used it, only when spotlight failed to do a good enough job. So I finally opened up activity monitor to look at my ram usage (I am thinking about upping) with all these apps open (FCP, PS, etc) and I notice my cpu is being 50% used.

So I change to view all apps and it appears googledesktopdae and MDS (spotlight) were using 20-30% of my cpu! I finally got rid of it after reading a bunch of forums. Apparently even if you uninstall GD, its process google desktop still stays on your mac and runs. Anyway I don't know how much it has been using while I didn't even realize but in the last 45 minutes since I fully got it removed my computer has been a "screamer!" Does anyone else have this installed? is it using much of your CPU? BTW to fully remove it follow these steps:

1. Delete the google desktop like you normally do any other program

2: add these files to your trashcan:
/Library/Google: delete entire folder
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins: delete GoogleGadget.webplugin and GoogleOneClikPluginDeluxe.plugin
/Library/LaunchAgents: delete com.google.Desktop.Agent.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons: delete com.google.Desktop.Daemon.plist, com.google.Desktop.StatUploader.plist, and com.google.GoogleML.plist

3. Then STOP the fallowing processes:
GoogleDesktopDae
MDS
MDworker

Then you can permanently delete the google files. Note that you must top the above processes before you empty your trashcan or else your mac wont let you permanently delete them.

OS X :: Excessive Data Time Machine Backups?

Oct 8, 2009

I have my Time Machine hooked up to a Time Capsule and it seems that Time Machine is backing up an excessive amount of data throughout the day. Normally the backups are just 5-10 MB, however it seems that once or twice a day it backs up 2-3 GB worth of data. I don't do much saving/creating/modifying of files during the day. just web-based programs, iTunes (no downloads), etc.

IMac :: Fan Runs Loudly With Excessive Rpm's?

Jan 17, 2010

I have been battling with fan speed on my iMac recently.

I installed iStat which shows normal temps, but the fan revs up to 4000rpm - for seemingly no reason at all. Sometimes its quiet for long periods. It sometimes helps for a while if I put the machine into Sleep mode, but then I hear the fan start to rev up again when I resume activity.

I have spent hours with tech support, who then upgraded me to a higher level of tech support. But still the problem continues.

IMac :: Excessive Hard Drive Noise Even With No Activity

Nov 16, 2009

I am getting HD noise like every 20 seconds. Even with no activity. Per the suggestions of another user, I typed this in terminal: iostat -w 1 disk0
And the sound seems to coincide with the output whenever the first column has a value other than 0. So it seems there is activity, it's just not user initiated. Is this some kind of energy saving feature that apple is doing or is it a logging application? Is anyone else having the same issues? Even if you're not, could you run the program and check for 1 or 2 minutes (without any other apps open or doing anything) to see if you also get a value other than 0 in the first column every so often and an associated sound?

OS X Mavericks :: Excessive Unauthorized Remote Access Attempts On IMac

Sep 5, 2014

This morning and throughout the day this is how my console looked:

My machine became unresponsive at times up to the point that I had to hard-restart it twice. Before today I hadn't noticed any weird activity like this, I looked up some of the ip addresses that appeared there and all of them were marked as malicious ip's.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this other than shutting down the vnc access? Is logmein a better/safer option? I need to connect to my machine remotely almost on a daily basis.

Why this started happening to my machine all of the sudden? is not like I keep highly classified info on that computer, is a common occurrence and I shouldn't worry? All the attempts are failed, but it got to a point where I'm getting more than one per second, so I guess that's what caused my machine to crash.

IMac :desktop Hd And Time Machine Backups

Sep 12, 2010

After having my 1TB G-Tech G-Drive Q desktop external h.d. crap out on me for a second or third time, this time for good, I give up on G-Tech. (I also had a faulty 500GB G-Tech portable which had to be replaced.)For many reasons, my iMac's Time Machine backups have to be stored on an external hard drive rather than on our Time Capsule. Two or three times in the past year or so, the external h.d. has become corrupted or something and has had to be reformatted, losing all the previous backups and starting all over again. This time, since the external h.d. is toast, I have no backups at all.

Hardware :: Hard Time Selecting Good Desktop Speakers For IMac

May 4, 2009

I'm looking at getting some good quality speakers for my new iMac. My budget is up to about $250. So far I've auditioned the following speakers;

1. Logitech Z2300. These sounded boomy and mushy to me. They are a good value though at around $150.

2. Bose Companion 3. I like the little hockey puck remote unit. They sounded very weak on mid-range. Surprisingly good low end output though.

3. Audio Engine A2. I really, really, really like these speakers. Until I play something with a lot of low end in them, then they just start farting because they can't handle anything under 100 hertz very well.

What I would really like to do is get the Audio Engine A2 and pair them up with a subwoofer at a later time, but in their short sightedness Audio Engine didn't put line outputs from the A2 so from what I can see there is no way to get them hooked up to a subwoofer.

IMac (Intel) :: Time Machine / External HD And Copying Backup To Desktop

Jun 5, 2014

I've recently starting having problems with my external HD that I use for my Time Machine backups. I'm not able to repair the drive using Disk Elements, so I want to copy some of my backups stored therein onto my Mac HD before I try reformatting the external HD. However, I get the error message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup" when I try dragging the backup folders onto my desktop. Is there any way to salvage the backups before I try reformatting?

Safari :: Google Maps Has Worked Only 1% Of The Time On MacBook Pro?

Apr 10, 2012

why Google Maps has worked only 1% of the time on this MacBook Pro ("MBP")  - either before or after I have undertaken 'Empty Cache' and 'Reset Safari'?All I get is an empty Google maps screen with markers (if I had requested a search). This has been true ever since I had this MBP two years ago and IS UNACCEPTABLE Apple! So that means Google Maps has not worked properly the whole time I have had this MBP I assume this is an attempt by Apple to dissuade us from using Google services because they are a major threat to Apple.

However, I have never split anything on my laptop nor has anyone else. I carry it around with me all the time. IMac :: Key Chain And Google Notifier

Jun 22, 2009

I'm a recently converted PC user and so far we love our iMac. The only issue we're having is with Key Chain and the Google Notifier. On my account I use the Gmail Notifier with no issues what so ever, on my Wife's account every time she logs in the Gmail Notifier asks her for her account information, when she inputs it, she is then prompted to input another password for the Key Chain. Every time she logs in it happens. The odd thing is that when I search for the Key Chain program in her profile I find the program, and I'm able to access it, however when I search for it in mine nothing comes up. We both have admin accounts, and the first account created was mine. Is Key Chain a separate program or does it come as part of OSX?

Software :: Mac Mail - Excessive Incoming Messages

Sep 8, 2009

I use Mac Mail at home and at work. At home everything works fine. At work, in general everything is working, but every time I start up Mail, it says there are over 1500 Incoming Messages and proceeds to "download" them. Of course there aren't these messages. My two email accounts are .Mac IMAP account and a business IMAP account. These 1500 messages don't seem to be put anywhere, and I can't seem to figure out which account these messages are coming from. The problem is downloading all of this makes my computer slow down a bunch (old mac) and it takes a long time. The problem does not affect my home Mac or my iPhone.

I would expect plenty of free space and that used to be the case but no longer. I am tired of an unresponsive machine and spinning beach-balls.

Previously the solution was to install Safari plugins Inquisitor or Glims but Apple have removed the interfaces from Safari 4 that these plugins used - and there is still no built in Safari Preference to set the locale of the Google search. Effectively this renders the Safari Google Search field pretty well useless - at least for UK users. If you're searching for UK-based businesses or individuals, for example, the thousands of USA results that come up first are just not relevant - (that's an example of British Understatement. by the way

Software :: Why Need Excessive HDD Space To Import Photos To IPhoto

I've been trying unsuccessfully to import 8gb worth of photos directly from my DSLR (a Canon 40D with CF card) to iPhoto and it keeps telling me I've run out of HD space before it's finished even though I've over 15gb to start with. I tried again tonight after freeing my HD up to 29 gb and it got to about 90% of the files when iphoto crashed, but I was monitoring it in finder only to see my free space go from 29gb to 10gb. Why do I need more than twice the memory card capacity to import these photos?

MacBook Air :: Storage Reporting Photos Are Taking Up Excessive Space

Aug 24, 2014

I can't seem to find out why my Mac is reporting such excessive storage use for "Photos". My iPhoto library says it's only about 1.47GB. Earlier today, I unchecked the option of importing photos from other locations to the iPhoto library, since we have an external hard drive that we use to store photos.

Why it's reporting such high usage? In the screenshot is OmniDiskSweeper, which shows sizes of each folder. They definitely aren't adding up to the 92GB that it says is in use, unless all that extra data is coming from some folder I don't have permission to.
