Hardware :: Create Folder In Root Directory Of Time Capsule
Jun 3, 2010
I use my Time Capsule to back up my laptop (Time Machine) and also as a networked hard drive. In the root directory of Time Capsule a folder called 'Data' is created to store the Time Machine backup. I can't seem to create folders next to the Data folder? I can't only create new folders within the Data folder. Is this normal?

I have a strange "/private" folder in my root directory (Macintosh HD) after a Time Capsule restore today. The folder is ~5GB in size, and appears to have been created during the restore process. The files in the folder have strange-appearing "system" file type names. Can I safely delete this folder? Not sure why its there, but given its size, I'd prefer to delete it.

I recently upgraded to Lion and now I see some strange test.txt documents on the lowest level of my hard drive. They are filled with some xml and soap stuff. Last one is made nearly a year ago. What frightens me is that it contains passwords. The documents are found by spotlight so a password search on my mac will come up with those documents. Were are they coming from? Can I safely remove them? an example:

I begin uni next month and have been offered accommodation. My room won't have WiFi but will have a wired connection. I'm wondering, is it possible to - rather than connect my MacBook - connect the Time Capsule to this connection and create a wireless network? Also, is it simple to switch from one connection (my current WiFi at home) to another (the uni connection)? Finally, is it easy to switch from being connected via Ethernet to using WiFi (after initial backup for example)? The lack of WiFi would really be rubbish when I have an iPhone and Time Capsule.

I have a Time Capsule providing a wireless network in my home. I would like use my Airport Express to create an additional network, and have it get its internet from one of the wired ethernet ports on the TC. Can you daisy chain them like that? I tried it and so far I haven't been able to get it to work.
Hopefully that makes sense. I'm not trying to set up a WDS with the TC and the Express, I'm trying to plug the Express into one of the ethernet connections on the TC so the Express can share that internet connection as a new, separate network (like what you would do if you had the Express in a hotel room, etc).
I have the Express set up to create a network, and my computer can connect to it, but the internet's not available for some reason. Should I expect this to be able to work?

I have a folder of important graduate school documents (essays). TC has been backing up stuff no problem, including those essays for some time. Somewhere along the line a file became corrupt and I could no longer transfer files to/from my usb drive, so I went through each essay, copy/pasted everything in each document into new word documents, saved and named each new file and saved them to the desktop. Basically I copied all my documents without actually copying them, but rather by copy/pasting and creating new documents. Fixing the corrupt file was verified by my ability to copy the new folder of identical grad school materials to and from my usb stick again, so I went to backup knowing all my stuff was intact again. All of the backing up I've done shows as being successful, no errors, etc. However, when I go into time machine to verify the backup of that grad school folder, that new folder of essays is nowhere to be found, i.e. its not backing up.

Im currently backing up my MacPro to a 250gb external drive via USB. Im about to purchase an Apple Time Capsule 1TB to allow for backing up the additional HDs that Ive installed in my MacPro. Can I just copy the existing TM folder from my external HD to the new Time Capsule and continue to do updated backups or do I have to start a new backup from the day I install the TC ?

I've recently upgraded to Mac OS Lion Server, and I'm having a big problem that's keeping me from finishing my last bit of work on a project. I've been trying to create network users so that they can sign in on any computer, and access their files via the server, but I've been told time and time again to create a Directory Administrator.
When I try to create one, I get this error

I have been unable to create an open directory replica from an open directory master.I have created an open directory master in Mavericks and added DNS, file sharing and users etc. I can connect, log in, all is good.I now want to create a replica on another machine for redundancy, yet I have been unable to do so. I have been able to diagnose through the terminal on each machine and get no errors except the following from the intended replica machine: Both Machines are Mac Mini servers, raided drives.
Replica has 8Gb RAM, Master has 16Gb macsvr1:~ admin$ sudo /usr/sbin/slapconfig -preflightreplica 192.168.0.11 diradmin+0000 Error; Unable to determine the master’s software version The rest of the terminal looks like this. Open Directory Master Primary address = 192.168.0.10
[Code] .......
I can verify each machine version and all DNS is fine. Both machines are in identical OS systems. 10.9.4 Server 3.1.2. Network is good as I can ping each machine from the other. ssh is enabled on both yet still i'm unable to create a replica.

When I connect my MP3 player (not an iPod ) to the Mac and delete some files, Mac OS X creates a folder .Trashes in the volume root and just moves all the files I intended to delete there. The only reason to delete files is of course freeing some space... and to free it I have to empty the system trash (which is not good). Is there any way to tell Mac OS X that it should not create a .Trashes folder there and remove the files permanently or at least move them to the trash on the local disk?

I would like to create a Smart folder that only has applications & utilities in a sub-folder.
This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?

I must have done something to my installation of OS X. When I go to create a new folder, it automatically creates the folder with the name "untitled folder". The problem is, the name isn't selected. Normally, when you create a new folder, you can just type the name immediately. For me, I have to create the new folder, then click on the name to select the text and then type it. Also, when I do go to type in the new name, the text "untitled folder" doesn't disappear. I just type over it.

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

I am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.
I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?

This is fine. When they open Microsoft Word e.g. and do a save you can't see this 'Work' folder in the Finder tree. Do I have to set up some kind of script - I just want a shortcut to this 'Work' home folder in Finder....how can you put one there automatically? Is there any easy way so if they save to their mac 'Documents' folder it just get's re-routed to their 'Work' folder?

With the update to OS-X 10.7.3 did anyone lose the entire Library folder from their user directory? I didn't notice until I started working on the installation of an application (beta version) and found the my entire ~/Library/ folder gone, all 57+ GBytes of it. I'm restoring it from Time Machine two days ago, but I wonder what happened with the update to completely remove it.
