MacBook Pro :: Dual Link DVI - MiniDisplayPort Adapter With 22" Screen
Sep 25, 2009
Long time reader and my first post. Apologies in advance if there's a real basic answer, but I've tried Google and searching this forum too but couldn't find a specific answer. Basically, I'm planning to upgrade to a 30" monitor eventually. I currently have a Samsung 226BW and I use the MiniDisplayPort -> DVI adapter.
I was wondering whether if I purchase the MiniDisplayPort --> Dual-Link DVI adapter ($99), can I still use it to connect to my 22" Samsung? I'm thinking of giving my cousin my current Mini-DisplayPort -> DVI adapter, buying the Dual link adapter and then eventually swapping out the 22" for a 30".

When I connect a display via a Dual-Link adapter (tested original Apple and Dr.Bott) to the external Mini-Displayport of my Macbook Pro 17" 2009 I don't get full 8 bit per channel color depth (or at least it's seriously messed up with heavy banding), neither in native resolution (2560x1600) nor in non-native (1920x1200).Running the same display via the same cable over a passive Single-Link adapter works perfectly well (all 256 shades of grey present).
I tried two different cables (both a Dual-Link and a Single-Link cable, both of which work with the Single-Link adapter). So either both Adapters are bugged the very same, or the 9600M GT does something wrong when a Dual-Link adapter is connected. It could also be a driver issue, but at least the internal display doesn't show any banding when running in Clone mode.Same happens on OS X with both the 9600M and 9400M. So either both adapters ain't working properly or there's something wrong with the combination of NVidia 9x00M and Dual-Link DVI.
And I tested three more single-link displays (1x 1920x1200, 2x 1680x1050) and only one works (the 1920x1200 Viewsonic VP2330), the other two show the same problem with both Mini-Displayport to Dual-Link DVI adapters. Then I tested connecting a current ATI based IMac 21.5" to one of the not working displays (a Samsung) and there worked with both adapters. So it seems that the 9400/9600M in the Macbook Pro output a signal of lower strength (compared to the ATI based Imac), which leads to signal degradation once coupled with a Dual-Link adapter. The reason why the VP2330 works probably is because it can work with weaker signals. That doesn't help me at all with my 30" display though and only 1 working display out of 4 is rather disappointing.

I might be purchasing a 30 inch cinema display and currently have a mid-2009 unibody MBP. I know I need the cable to power it, but do I need to drop the 100 dollars for the apple one or are their any alternatives?

I have a 8x2.93 with 2 x 30" apple displays & the ati 4870.I have the displayport to dual-link dvi adapter to use both monitors. The monitor connected to the dvi port on the card is fine. The monitor connected via the adapter occasionally 'flickers' or kinda turns on/off very quickly. It's very intermittent. Often will go hours without doing it, but regularly does it 3-5 times a day.
I've tried swapping monitors around, and the problem follows the adapter.I've also got a 2nd adapter here spare (that I sometimes use for my laptop) that I swapped in as a test and the same happens.Smells to me like a firmware bug.I rang apple and amusingly they told me to run the vga firmware update. I told them it was not vga and they told me I still needed to run it. When I ran it of course the updating program said "no vga displays connected". Real smart advice there. They are looking into it and said they might be 5 days.

I have a couple end users who have the newer MBP's with 30" monitors using the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. A number of them are experiencing issues with small, roughly 1" long by 1 pixel high, horizontal lines that flash intermittently. Has anyone else experienced this? Know of a solution?

I just got my crazy new DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter in the mail today, 2 months late. I must be one of the first. It's a pretty crazy adapter. 5 feet long with a sizable box on the end, requiring power via a vestigial USB connector. It works fine visually on my 30 inch Cinema HD display, but now my mouse cursor is jumpy. Every few seconds as I drag my mouse, the cursor jumps 5-10 inches, making it hard and frustrating to use.

I have a new MacBook Pro with Miniport connected to a Cinema 30 using the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. I upgraded from the previous version of the Macbook Pro w/built-in DVI and never had a problem.
From the moment I started using this new miniport adapter with the Cinema 30, I noticed intermittent graphic anomalies. Most of the time, discolored lines will start rapidly popping in and out across the screen - especially noticeable with dark backgrounds. Here are a couple of quick videos that visualize the problem.

6 weeks ago I bought a Mac Pro Dual Quad 2,66 with an ATI HD 4870 graphic adapter. System is OS X 10.5.7. I try to get an Eizo 30" display (SX 3031W) working with this configuration. Using the signal connector #1 on the Eizo , the display will show up to 2560x1600 resolution (as it should be) but after selecting this option will fall back to 1600x1200 pixel. I tried installing on the DVI plug of the card and also on the minidisplay-port using the "Mini Displayport to Dual Link DVI adapter" from Apple but up to now it does not work.

Both monitors work perfectly on the dual dvi card in my old macpro which is still here.

I know apple says you need two GT 120's for a dual screen, but couldn't you have a MDP for the first screen, then get a DVI to MDP adapter for the second screen? or would OSX not recognize it?

Im looking to buy on of these adapters from apple and I'm not sure which to purchase. I know the single link adapter would be good for the 24in monitor ill be hooking it up to about half the time, but the other half of the time ill have it hooked up to either a 40in or 52in HDTV. Will the single link be able to handle this or will I need,or am I at least better off with the dual link adapter? On a side not, what does the dual link actually offer over the single link, and what is the usb adapter on it for?

got a problem with my Optoma projektor, since i?m using a OPPO HM-31 hdmi switch that doesn?t support Dual-link DVI, so my macpro can?t display anything and just keep switching between desktop and blue screen. I?m connectting from 2600xt via dvi-hdmi through a hdmi cable. Without the switch there?s no problem.
Q: Is it possible to by bypass Dual-link DVI, so that my hdmi-switch only receives a Single-link DVI signal?
Macpro:
octo 2.8 w, 2600xt, 20" ACD

I just bought a Dual Link DVI to HDMI cable. From what I know I will be able to get sound out of of this set up. However, I cannot fingure out how to get sound via HDMI.
There is no such option when I went to sound preference, unline when I was using a minidisplay port to HDMI adapter where I could hear sound on my HDTV via HDMI.
If I could get sound out of dual link dvi to hdmi cable, what do I need to do in order to get the sound working via HDMI instead of Analog Line Out.
I was frustrated because the minidisplay port/adapter does not work for bootcamp, so I went out and bought dual link dvi to hdmi cable instead. Graphic is as great as HDMI, but I could not figure out how to get the sound via hdmi while using this setup.

I've been searching the net for a Multi Format Switcher (MVX) that's compatible with dual-link DVI. Minium additional connections required are Componet Video and two additional DVI Sockets.
Does anyone know which out of the sea of MVX's will work with the ACD30?
FYI: I don't mean display splitters.

I'm in the process of replacing my MBP with an early 2k9 iMac as my DAW machine. I'm shopping around for external monitors, and I'm leaning a 27" monitor that natively displays 2048 x 1152. My question is, if I get a dual link dvi cable- will my iMac be able to display this resolution on an external monitor?

I've been trying to connect my MacBook to my Dell monitor. So, first I bought a mini DVI-VGA cord, but realized that I had a DVI not an AVI connection. In order to save time and money, I bought a DVI (female)-VGA (male) adapter. Everything fits in and connects perfectly. The problem is: when I turn on my Dell monitor nothing shows up. It says it's on safe mode and all I have to do is press a key on the keyboard or move my mouse. I do that, but it doesn't detect anything.
I know my laptop detects the monitor because when I go to display --> arrangement, I see there are 2 screens and display --> Gather Windows, a window for the Dell does pop up. From my understanding that once you plug in all the cords from your Mac to your monitor, it should work right away. So whats wrong with my dual screen? And how can I get it working?

Here's the picture:
I have a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter, which I plug into HDMI-DVI adapter, which goes into DVI-VGA adapter to which I have connected VGA cable from LG LCD screen. MBP recognizes the external LCD LG screen fine, but the LG doesn't show any picture. I also tried with one other external VGA LCD screen. Same thing, no picture. I know 100% that VGA cable, VGA-DVI adapter and MiniDisplay Port-HDMI adapter all work. I cannot test the HDMI-DVI adapter anywhere though. Could it be the problem? Or is just that it's too many adapters?

The Mac Pro people seem to have trouble with their computers hooked up to monitors using a MiniDisplayPort to DisplayPort connection. There might be issues both with cables and adapters:

I'm trying to figure out if it's a problem specific to the Mac Pro video card or if it's a general issue that affects MacBook Air users as well. If you're connecting your MacBook Air to a monitor using a MiniDisplayPort to DisplayPort connection, could you please post which adapter+cable or cable (brands, links if possible) you are using with which monitor?

Can anyone please confirm that audio is transmitted over the MDP and comes out of an HDMI adapter to a TV or A/V receiver on the new MBPs? A bonus would be to know that 5.1 and/or TrueHD/DTS HD-MA (from a Blu-Ray MKV created using MakeMKV) makes it out of MDP to an A/V receiver via HDMI. It would be great to get confirmation of this on the 13" and the 15"/17" before I decide whether to order.
