MacBook Pro :: MiniDisplayPort - HDMI With Audio
Apr 14, 2010
Can anyone please confirm that audio is transmitted over the MDP and comes out of an HDMI adapter to a TV or A/V receiver on the new MBPs? A bonus would be to know that 5.1 and/or TrueHD/DTS HD-MA (from a Blu-Ray MKV created using MakeMKV) makes it out of MDP to an A/V receiver via HDMI. It would be great to get confirmation of this on the 13" and the 15"/17" before I decide whether to order.

Wondering if (using adapter), I could hook up my MBP in Bootcamp to a HDTV, use the MDPtoHDMI adapter, and have audio? Basically, use the TV as a monitor (for gaming), and have the MBP's sound come thru the TV's speakers?

Has anyone tried using their mid-2010 imac with hdmi and can confirm if audio (out) works? All the adapters seem to claim audio support with the refresh macbooks but do not mention iMAC. On the Apple store they sell a moshi adapter that lists iMAC support but specifies early-2010 models. Is apple deliberately crippling the new iMACs to *not* allow audio over displayport>HDMI or what is the real story? Some older support threads seem to talk about it working on their 2009 imacs until they upgraded to os 10.6.4. I have tried a few generic cables/adapters but they don't seem to talk audio to my receiver. Anyone had better success?

Here's the picture:
I have a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter, which I plug into HDMI-DVI adapter, which goes into DVI-VGA adapter to which I have connected VGA cable from LG LCD screen. MBP recognizes the external LCD LG screen fine, but the LG doesn't show any picture. I also tried with one other external VGA LCD screen. Same thing, no picture. I know 100% that VGA cable, VGA-DVI adapter and MiniDisplay Port-HDMI adapter all work. I cannot test the HDMI-DVI adapter anywhere though. Could it be the problem? Or is just that it's too many adapters?

Just got the email from MonoPrice that their MiniDP -> DVI and MiniDP -> HDMI cables are available (still no mdp->VGA). I was going to get one, but I am getting a monitor with full size Display port so I just got their MiniDP->DP cable instead. Thought this might interest anyone needing direct to DVI or HDMI. If I decide to get one I'll post up with details. seems interesting that they don't have a picture yet, but it is only $15 so I imagine it isnt something with a big bulky adapter. to DVI: [URL]

So I am thinking about purchasing 2 HDMI monitors to hook up with my iMac. I know that the iMac only has 1 MiniDisplayport so I looked and I found this:

I was wondering if I could use this for hooking up two monitors to my mac. If I can, would it be recommended that I upgrade my memory? I currently have 4 GB of RAM.

I want to hook my Macbook Pro up to a Sony Bravia (not sure of the exact model). I went to the Apple Store, and was given these two items to hook it up. Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support. Belkin High Speed HDMI Cable - 6 feet
We successfully hooked it up last night, and the video worked. I was told in the store that this setup would not transfer audio, so I already knew there would not be sound coming from the TV, rather from the Macbook instead. My Q is: What's the easiest way to get audio to come from the TV? I'd rather not buy external speakers to plug in, if I can help it.

With the new Mac Mini models, you can have audio out via HDMI or the line out. I am thinking to hook the mini up to an LCD TV/monitor via HDMI (sound on the monitor) and also to my other TV/sound system via the mini DP and audio out.
I assume when the mini turns on it'll activate both displays (if they are turned on), and from what I understand you can have two displays running. I'd only want one at a time so I'd have the other display switched off. But can the mini output audio to either both, or whichever system I am using? I've read a lot of posts but can't find a definite answer. I only want audio (and video for that matter, but can turn off other screen) to one TV at a time, but do I have to go into the OS audio settings each time I want to swap between the two?
I'm also thinking of using Plex and keeping it open at all times, just sleeping the mini when not in use. Can the mini only output to one source, requiring manual switching to the other (i.e. going from HDMI to audio out)?

I have a nice new TV with an HDMI input and a nice Macbook with Front Row. If I use a cable to convert the Macbook's DVI to HDMI, how will I get audio to the TV (given that audio would normally be on the HDMI cable)?

I bought the MDP to HDMI connector about a week ago, and yesterday I received my Asus VH242H LCD. Everything is just perfect. The monitor snapped to 1920x1080 on hook up, I moved the menu bar and dock to the 24" display and it's just beautiful. The Asus has some built in speakers, nothing special, but perfectly fine for Youtube and iMovie creations... I'm using a standard audio cable, since HDMI won't send the audio yet, hopefully it will later. Just thought I'd let everyone know that is considering a Asus LCD, I was very impressed. No dead pixels, very little backlight bleed that I can see, and the colors are perfect, then again, I'm not a photographer/photoshop guy.

I have an HDMI cord that connects to a mini display port and then to my mac. It plays the video on my tv but my TV won't play the auido. I can only hear the audio from my mac. Is it because my mac is an older model? Do I need to upgrade my OS or buy a new mac altogether?

Ever since the latest generation of MacBook/ Macbook Pro you can now send audio over the MiniDisplay Port output. The tech specs on Apples web site say no word about it. Any early adopters out that that can prove me wrong? 2 Cables (power, MiniDisplay Port to HDMI) is much better than 3 (power, headphone jack, DVI to HDMI in current Old MacBook Pro Setup). With the nice Graphics card the MacBook Air works great as a portable Media player, I just hope it has this feature.

I've been searching high and low and cannot find a MDP-to-HDMI cable (not adapter) that supports audio out for use with my MBP. Does such a cable exist, or do I absolutely need to use an adapter? Looking for the cleanest solution possible. Looks like I found a cable on eBay. They do exist from individual cable-makers, but it looks like they don't exist from cable manf's like Monoprice and Blue Jeans Cable.

I have an early 2009 unibody 17-inch MBP and a new 2010 LG 50" LED HDTV (model PJ350). I got a mini displayport adaptor that allows me to connect the MBP to the TV using an HDMI cable. The video display is great but there is no sound, and I am aware only the new 2010 allow sound to go through to the TV and not my 2009 MBP. So I connected an AV cable through my MBP headphone port to the AV connection on the TV, but I get sound only on the AV menu. So if I select the HDMI mode I can only see video with no sound, or if I go to the AV mode I only get sound and no video. Is there any way I can see the video through HDMI while getting sound that is coming through the AV at the same time?

I recently purchased and received the new monoprice HDMI adapter with USB audio. I have now had the chance to fully test it and use it several times, and have made the following observations(1) This adapter is extremely easy to use. Just plug MDP and USB into your mac, hook up the HDMI cable to both ends, and you're ready to go, no software or drivers necessary.(2) The video is of high quality, and unaltered by the adapter. Images are crisp and clear. Full 1080p is supported.(3) Audio is also of high quality, although this adapter only supports stereo and not 5.1/7.1. The audio is as good or better than DVD quality, depending on the audio source.

I just tried using my Monoprice mini displayport to HDMI adapter with my 2010 MBP connected to my TV. Audio did not work.So I'm wondering if I'm missing a setup step on my MBP or if maybe the monoprice adapter is out of date (according to Apple only adapters with VESA 1.1 or higher are compatible w/ the 2010 MBPs audio out feature and I bought the adapter a year ago).

I've connected my macbook 6.1 to my HD TV via a mini display port to HDMI cable. The picture is fine however I don't have any sound! Will I need a separate connection for audio on the macbook version I have (I know the newer ones are able to transmit picture and audio through the HDMI connection). Or this this a fault with the cables I have?

I have a (little) problem with my new MacBook Air 2014 (13 inch.) running on 10.9.4 : when I connect it to any HDMI device (Philips monitor or Sony TV through Marantz amplifier) through a mini DP-HDMI adapter, I can't set audio output to HDMI because this option does not exist... However, I have video signal.
I've tried lots of "solutions", but nothing is working :
- Shutting down, restarting, sleeping with and without the cable connected
- Change HDMI cable
- Reset PRAM
Finally, I think the problem come from the Macbook because I have an other laptop (a Thinkpad with a mini displayport, with Ubuntu 14.04) and the video and sound are working normally.

I just got a new MBP, and I like to use my notebooks connected to my HDTV for movie watching and some occasional gaming. I was looking around at cables (mostly at monoprice) and no one seems to have a mini displayport -> hdmi cable that will carry the audio signal.
Has anyone seen them available online?

I would like to run a Macbook Pro Retina (2014) with the lid closed and all video and audio via HDMI routed to an external monitor (Samsung Syncmaster from 2010). Is this possible? When I try this, no sound is transferred to the external monitor and I cannot operate the Macbook Pro with the lid closed. As soon as I close the lid, it cuts the signal to the external screen. I’ve tried looking for previous posts but they’re about MCP’s connecting via Thunderbolt or DVI.

I would like to connect my Macbook Pro to my hometheatre via HDMI. Normally no problem with the mini display port and an HDMI adapter, but the port is already used for the 27" cinema display... Is there another adapter available that let`s me connect both, an HDMI device and the cinema display to my Macbook? I only care about the sound - I want to get digital sound to my receiver. (I am not interested in the solution via airport express and then connect via analogue audio cable - I am looking to get a digital sound signal all the way through...) about Macobook Pro: mid 2010, 17", Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB)

So while at a gig last night with my band, we ran a video from my computer to screens on stage. The chain looked like so:
MBP -> Mini-DisplayPort -> MDP/HDMI converter -> 4-way HDMI Splitter -> LCD Monitors
Now sometime during takedown, someone just decided to unplug something from my computer without consulting me or taking any proper precautions. Now my audio is stuck on Digital Output (type digital optical out). Here's what I know, and what I've tried.I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM?I have killed coreaudio a few times with no luck?I have deleted without progress:
1) com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
2) com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
3) com.apple.systemsound.plist
I have restarted my computer?I have attempted to use Audio MIDI Setup?I have googled:
1) com.apple.systemsound
2) macbook pro stuck on digital out audio no red light
3) force resetting to internal audio osx
4) force reset coreaudio osx
[code]....

I have a 13" mid 2011 MacBook Air and a new ViewSonic VX2453 monitor. I used the Monoprice mini display port to HDMI converter with audio and connected the monitor to my computer's thunderbolt port. The video works perfectly, but the sound isn't working at all. I set my computer's sound output in settings to VX2453 series (type: HDMI), and I set my monitor's audio input to HDMI. Nothing. I also tried changing the frequency in Audio MIDI Setup, which someone recommended on amazon for the monoprice adapter, but that didn't work either.
I tested the monitor's sound by switching audio input instead to "audio in" and connected to my headphone jack, and that worked so the monitor's sound is fine.
