View 4 Replies5870 Mac Edition, I was considering flashing a PC 4870 or 4890. I had been browsing through Cindori's first post in the 4870/4890 flashing thread, and noticed that the cards shown in the pictures are becoming very hard to come by.

Technology is advancing in rate that it is faster than we can obtain it. I am waiting for my mac pro with the ati 4870 GPU, & was suprised when I saw this article; [URL]
I will recive my mac pro after two weeks. I believe that I am going to upgrade when I recive it.
With the recent Steam for Mac release, I have been thinking about getting a new video card again, however I am looking for reasons to get it. So I am just wondering will I see any speed improvements if I used a better video card on Aperture 3 (running 32bit because I use nik software)? I also use FCP, Photoshop quite often.
View 1 Replies View RelatedApparently, Apple is seeding updated Graphics drivers .
Can any of our GPU gurus hazard a guess at whether these will benefit those of us with flashed cards, or will they more likely brick them, or do we just not know until we test them?
I don't want to get my hopes up for improvements that might never happen!
I like eMacs but the G5 looks sooo nice. I know I probably won't be able to use any for very long but whatever. What is the best?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI haven't seen anymore discussion on this, did we ever get the 4890 flashed and working as a native card in a mac pro? I'd really like to buy one and do this, I know there is the natit fix but that is a no-go for me as I need the boot screen on my mac. I also need dual DVI ports as I have dual 23" cinemas.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have read the 3 or 4 discussions on flashing the 4890. I just ordered one and plan on doing a clean install of snow leopard and installing the card at the end of the week. However, some of the links from rapid share don't appear to be working. Can some one point me to where these files have moved and are there an snow leopard specific files?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI ran some tests on my 2009 Quad Nehalem to try and determine what was up with the triple Vs dual memory "brouhaha".
I posted the results as a new thread because I think it will be useful information for a lot of quad owners, but it was originally going to be a reply to this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=735845
Here we go. Tesselator suggested 3 tests that could show the differences in speed between triple and dual channel bandwidth.
Quote:
As one idea I would maybe try creating a few very large images (16-bit, blank white, blank black, gradient fill) and then duplicating and deleting that layer repeatedly a few hundred times.
So I did them, 10 times each. I could have gone on, but the results were very very stable after the first 2 attempts.
Set-up: a 40Mpx, 16bit image (8000*5000). First test it was simply filled white; second test: black; and third test a black to white gradient. I added a fourth test, using a real (photo) 12Mpx RAW image from my Nikon D300.
I created (took a while!) an action with 350 repetitions of "duplicate layer" and "delete layer", followed by a red fill to let me know the action was done. The same action was used in all four tests.
The computer was restarted before each of the four tests, which may explain the irregularities on the first 1-2 attempts. Nothing else but PS4 was launched.
The results are interesting:
We can clearly see that the simple white and black fills show a speed difference of around 10%.
We can also clearly see that this difference disappears when a more complex image is used. The use of more complex images represents a much more realistical use of PS.
To make things even more realistic, I also tested RetouchActions's speed test on my own 12Mpx image. I use nearly all of the operations of that action on a daily basis, so it's a lot more representative of the work I do on PS.
Here are the results:
The results are clear: 11% increase in performance using 8GB of ram (Vs 6GB) when working on a 12Mpx image.
Added info: number of page-outs after running the 10 test series (after about 45 minutes of intense PS work):
-17K when using 6GB (1.7K page-out avg).
-10K when using 8GB (1K page-out avg).
For me the results are definitive: unless I plan on working only with full black or full white images (not even black and white!), having 8GB is better, even when working on smallish 12Mpx files. I imagine the differences would have been even greater using bigger file sizes of actual complex images.
What would now be interesting: someone with a 2009MP Octo doing the same tests at 12GB and 16GB.
I recently flashed my Sapphire 4870 1gb card and haven't been able to get dual monitor support working in Mac OS. Has anyone been able to get this working on a Sapphire 4870?
It works fine in Windows, not sure why it wont work in MacOS as I imagine the 10.5.7 drivers should be doing all the work.
I've been searching now for 2 days and i've read so many different things it's ridiculous. All i need is for someone to confirm that YES it is possible to run dual 24" LED cinema displays from a single 4870.
One would hook up to the mini display port, and the other thru the DVI port.
Also, anybody have pics of their dual display setup?
I have an issue with my 4870 (Mac edition) that has been occurring since day one (when I purchased it last month), but it's not something that happens every single time.
I've run into a problem that the 4870 has trouble recognizing one or both monitors plugged in. If I shut off power to my displayport-connected main monitor, it'll throw the menu bar, all the desktop items, and application windows onto the second monitor (DVI-connected). This also happens when I shut off the second monitor (desktop items and app windows get shuffled to the main monitor).
The other issue is that on startup, it may just be slow to recognize one of them, and the above screen-swapping issues happen anyway, followed seconds later by the screen once again being recognized.
I recently purchased a second 22" Dell 2209WA to go with my Mac Pro. They are both running from the ATI Radeon 4870 on my Mac Pro (2009 Quad) but the Expose performance seems to be really quite poor. Displaying all the windows is very juddery and not smooth at all. Is that what I should be expecting now? I wouldn't have on a 2000 Machine. Going into Spaces is fine, it's just Expose thats poor.
View 10 Replies View RelatedToday I just bought and installed an (Apple) ATI 4870 for my '06 Mac Pro. It's all gone pretty smoothly, however I have noticed that flash video playback from sites such as Youtube and Vimeo are jerky. Have I missed something about installing a 4870 into an older MP? I thought it was basically plug and play - even though it's not officially supported by Apple. Quicktime movies are nice and smooth. This is under Snow Leopard, so I'm not sure if the problem exists under Leopard but I could probably move my last bootable backup drive into an enclosure with firewire and check things out.

got a problem with my Optoma projektor, since i?m using a OPPO HM-31 hdmi switch that doesn?t support Dual-link DVI, so my macpro can?t display anything and just keep switching between desktop and blue screen. I?m connectting from 2600xt via dvi-hdmi through a hdmi cable. Without the switch there?s no problem.
Q: Is it possible to by bypass Dual-link DVI, so that my hdmi-switch only receives a Single-link DVI signal?

Im looking to buy on of these adapters from apple and I'm not sure which to purchase. I know the single link adapter would be good for the 24in monitor ill be hooking it up to about half the time, but the other half of the time ill have it hooked up to either a 40in or 52in HDTV. Will the single link be able to handle this or will I need,or am I at least better off with the dual link adapter? On a side not, what does the dual link actually offer over the single link, and what is the usb adapter on it for?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking about buying the mac pro 2.26GHz model and it comes with the nvidia gt120 card. Anyways, I noticed that it has 1 mini displayport and 1 dual link dvi port. My question is, can I connect a regular dvi-i into the dual link dvi port?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 8x2.93 with 2 x 30" apple displays & the ati 4870.I have the displayport to dual-link dvi adapter to use both monitors. The monitor connected to the dvi port on the card is fine. The monitor connected via the adapter occasionally 'flickers' or kinda turns on/off very quickly. It's very intermittent. Often will go hours without doing it, but regularly does it 3-5 times a day.
I've tried swapping monitors around, and the problem follows the adapter.I've also got a 2nd adapter here spare (that I sometimes use for my laptop) that I swapped in as a test and the same happens.Smells to me like a firmware bug.I rang apple and amusingly they told me to run the vga firmware update. I told them it was not vga and they told me I still needed to run it. When I ran it of course the updating program said "no vga displays connected". Real smart advice there. They are looking into it and said they might be 5 days.
I just bought a Dual Link DVI to HDMI cable. From what I know I will be able to get sound out of of this set up. However, I cannot fingure out how to get sound via HDMI.
There is no such option when I went to sound preference, unline when I was using a minidisplay port to HDMI adapter where I could hear sound on my HDTV via HDMI.
If I could get sound out of dual link dvi to hdmi cable, what do I need to do in order to get the sound working via HDMI instead of Analog Line Out.
I was frustrated because the minidisplay port/adapter does not work for bootcamp, so I went out and bought dual link dvi to hdmi cable instead. Graphic is as great as HDMI, but I could not figure out how to get the sound via hdmi while using this setup.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I connect a display via a Dual-Link adapter (tested original Apple and Dr.Bott) to the external Mini-Displayport of my Macbook Pro 17" 2009 I don't get full 8 bit per channel color depth (or at least it's seriously messed up with heavy banding), neither in native resolution (2560x1600) nor in non-native (1920x1200).Running the same display via the same cable over a passive Single-Link adapter works perfectly well (all 256 shades of grey present).
I tried two different cables (both a Dual-Link and a Single-Link cable, both of which work with the Single-Link adapter). So either both Adapters are bugged the very same, or the 9600M GT does something wrong when a Dual-Link adapter is connected. It could also be a driver issue, but at least the internal display doesn't show any banding when running in Clone mode.Same happens on OS X with both the 9600M and 9400M. So either both adapters ain't working properly or there's something wrong with the combination of NVidia 9x00M and Dual-Link DVI.
And I tested three more single-link displays (1x 1920x1200, 2x 1680x1050) and only one works (the 1920x1200 Viewsonic VP2330), the other two show the same problem with both Mini-Displayport to Dual-Link DVI adapters. Then I tested connecting a current ATI based IMac 21.5" to one of the not working displays (a Samsung) and there worked with both adapters. So it seems that the 9400/9600M in the Macbook Pro output a signal of lower strength (compared to the ATI based Imac), which leads to signal degradation once coupled with a Dual-Link adapter. The reason why the VP2330 works probably is because it can work with weaker signals. That doesn't help me at all with my 30" display though and only 1 working display out of 4 is rather disappointing.
I just got my crazy new DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter in the mail today, 2 months late. I must be one of the first. It's a pretty crazy adapter. 5 feet long with a sizable box on the end, requiring power via a vestigial USB connector. It works fine visually on my 30 inch Cinema HD display, but now my mouse cursor is jumpy. Every few seconds as I drag my mouse, the cursor jumps 5-10 inches, making it hard and frustrating to use.
