Aug 21, 2010I am finally buying my first Mac (as well as my first laptop) and need some advice as to what I truly need (as opposed to what I covet) - not just for school but for professional internships as well.
I will be using Adobe Creative Suite (CS5), with Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator, but I am also an interior designer and use drafting and modeling progams such as AutoCAD and Revit or similar.
I have settled on a 15" Macbook Pro because I wish to be an ambidextrous platform user, but here are a few things I am undecided about:
-Intel Core i5 or i7 processor?
(I believe the i5 is packaged with NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics processor with 256MB GDDR3 memory and the i7 with 512MB GDDR3 memory)
-4GB of RAM or 8GB?
(should I start with 4 and add modules later if I need them?)
-500GB Hard Drive: 5400rpm or 7200rpm?
-the standard 1440 x 900 display or the Hi-Res 1680 x 1050?
(after reading other posts here, it seems that the gloss screen will be better for me than the anti-glare)
Anything else I should be considering?

Jul 3, 2010If you try configuring a new macbook pro through the education store, I get all the usual student discounts and stuff. Now, like usual, they also have the option to get microsoft office preinstalled on my laptop too. However, clicking on it, does not add to the price at all (like its free....) but I can't see any promotion of this being free. Is this just my browser being weird or is this legit?

Jun 3, 2010I'll be starting college this fall. I'm not a major gamer. The extent of my gaming is The Sims series. I also enjoy a good free online flash game here and there. I love surfing YouTube, using iTunes, uploading my photos to iPhoto, using Skype, etc. Basic computer tasks.Now that I'm heading off to school, I'm ready to switch computers. I've had a MacBook Pro my last four years of high school (the Core Duo model). It has been a tried and true workhorse. I rarely moved it around, though when I had to, it was a cumbersome addition to my ever-growing book bag.Am I a fool for truly considering the air? An iPad isn't going to cut if for college (I don't want an iPad and a Mac laptop) and would love something ultra-portable that's easy to pull out on the desk and have another piece of paper to the side. I don't mind using Bootcamp for virtualization.
Are there still quality issues with the Air like the revision A? I wouldn't touch one of those with a 5-foot stick. It's been a long time since I played around with one. The lack of CD-drive does not bother me at all. Basically, I want a reliable machine (e price-point of the Air is fine) that doesn't stutter on YouTube, will last my 4 years of college surfing the web and doing Microsoft Office apps like my MacBook Pro Core Duo has, and is an overall portable machine. I envision taking this machine across the globe with me. Yes, I have big dreams.

However, I'm having a problem deciding between the macbook or the macbook pro and what configurations would be best. Aside from writing essays, spreadsheets and presentations, I'd primarily use my laptop for internet surfing and instant messaging. I have a ton of music and photos and will be doing light photo editing. I already have a 200gb external hard drive so I shouldn't be needing any extra space. I also tend to run a lot of programs at the same time. Which mac and which configuration makes most sense for me?

Oct 26, 2009I successfully performed a clean install using VMWare Fusion and the Windows 7 ISO. The installer accepted by serial as well. I restarted in VMWare and it ran fine, but when I try to boot in Bootcamp, it flips to a blue screen for a second and then it shuts down and restarts.
Anyone had this problem and know a fix for it?

As a pc user looking for an upgrade and to try something different, i have now come to the crossroad on what to buy for word processing and the works. Now i have been using office 2007 for the past year and a half and have rehabilitated to the new format. Since the pc version of office 2007 will not run on a mac and i will be forced to pay $150 for the one for the mac. Which is better.
