Everytime I download a .dmg file to my downloads folder, a bunch of other .dmg files--and multiple versions of the same file--open up and place themselves on the desktop. So, for example, I try to install Silverlight, and a dozen Microsoft Office dmg files open up and show up on my desktop, and another dozen or so Flip4Mac dmg files do the same thing.
I am relatively new to the Mac. I have a Macbook Pro 2.2GHz. Today, a file keeps popping up on my desktop. It is named .DS_Store. The icon looks like a text document. I won't open it cuz I'm afraid of what it is, lol (Windows still clogging my brain). Anyway, I can drag it to the trash and delete the trash, but after a bit, it reappears.
I want to keep my school files on desktop two so they are all in the same place, and use desktop one as a place to perhaps save photos or other files not school related. When I swipe between desktops, the school files move between the desktops as I swipe but I want to keep them on one desktop all the time.
I'm getting my Mac in a week and I would like to know it I can drag files from my Leopard desktop to my Parallels desktop. All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Why does my mac stop downloading files, copying to clipboard, saving files to desktop, etc?
iMac g5 1.9 ghz 17" running 10.5.8. Had a hard drive crash and bought a new one. Loaded new OS leapord. Everything works fine at first, but after the computer has been on for a while, it will stop downlading files, disk verify doesn't work. I can't copy and paste stuff. It seems as if the hard drive is full, but I have only used 32GB of 300GB.
When I restart, it works again, then slowly not. Is it an overheating issue? How do I know if my fan is running? Is it a bad hard drive I put in it? Bought it new with three year waranty.
I have a problem with files and folders being "paralyzed" on my desktop. I can't move files or folders and I cannot upload a file from the desktop. Basically, the desktop is broken.
I just upgraded to Lion yesterday, but that has not fixed the problem.
I emailed a .wmv file from the desktop..when I moved the file to trash, it also got deleted from the Movies folder...if I move it out of Trash, it goes back into Movies but also stays on the desktop, which I don't want
My files are there if I look into desktop folder through the finder but In the real scenario of Desktop The files does not display on the Desktop although they are there. how do I make them appear on the desktop
I can't save files to my desktop. I have no problem saving the same file anywhere else. WHen I try through excel, for example, it tells me the file is read only. When I try to save it as a different file name, a pop up tells me I do not have permission to save to the desktop. The same issue occurs when I attempt to take a screen shot (default save to desktop)
I'm not sure what I should be doing, even when I look in the finder folder the desktop section is cleared out, so there shouldn't be anything on my desktop. The icons are still there though, I can't even click on them or anything!
How can i connect my laptop to my desktop to access its data- but work on my big dektop screen?
i know ive been told that there is a way to do this i just cant remember-somehting about connectine with a fire wire and holding down certain keys when my desktop starts up?I dont want to change the date on my main computer- just create a secont "desktop" and use my laptop for that( big imovie presentation with all my files and music software on my leptop)
Recently (in addition to other seemingly unrelated password problems), files on my desktop became locked. Finder asks for a password to delete them. I believe an Apple Genius said thought this was normal behavior, but we've never had that happen before on this computer (Mac intel core 2 duo v10.7.4) or anyother of our Apple computers, which are several years old.
So, is this suspicious activity, or is this a normal feature of the OS?
I have a Mac desktop computer, and I have about 4,000 songs on that itunes that I would like to transfer over to my new Macbook Pro laptop. What would be the easiest way to accomplish this?
I can't move any files on the desktop or put them in the trash. When I try to move the file it shows the circle with the loine through it. When I try to trash them it asks for a password, after I type it in it makes the typical trashing sound but it doesn't go into the trash. I am using lion.
MS Excel put two files on my desktop that cannot be opened, moved or trashed. They are not files I created, and are identified by a random series of 8 letters/numbers. When I try to open or move them there's simply no response. When I try to trash them I get the message: "The item 'xxxxxxxx' can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted." I had this same problem a couple years ago and I called Apple Care and they walked me through how to delete the files. Now my Apple Care is expired and I'd rather not pay $50 to resolve a rather simple problem. It's just that I can't recall the procedure for deleting these files. how to get these files off the desktop?
A few days ago, I tried to open iTunes, and I got an error message that iTunes could not open because of error 13024. I tried to open skype, and I had an error message that it couldn't open as well.
Confused, I decided to restart the computer. When I got to the login screen, I entered my password and hit enter. The login wondow closed, but the login screen (the purple space picture) remained. I waited and waited, but it still remained. The cursor wasn't showing that the mac was working on it.
Frustrated after trying and retrying to restart the computer and login with no success, I started pushing random buttons dejectedly on the keyboard. When I hit the play/pause button, and iTunes started opening. The same errror message came up, but with it came the top iTunes bar, complete with the little apple symbol in the top right hand corner.
With that, I was able to open firefox, pages, and other recent items. But I can't open finder, and the dock is still gone.
Other issues that have come with this: history items don't save on firefox, copy & paste doesn't work for any programs, i can't sage changes I've made to existing pages documents.
I should note that my startup disk is full. I was in the miiddle of finding files I didn't need to delete when this all happened. I've tried deleting files through the "open..." function in pages, with no luck. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the issue.
I have had two files to appear on my desktop. They appear to be Excel files but I cannot open them in Excel or with any program. When I click on my hard rive and highlight the desktop, these two files are not listed but they are there visually.
I have a macbook pro 13 inch late 2011. Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, all downloads generate an RTF file in the Desktop. If I'm not checking constantly and erasing these files, suddenly the desktop is full of useless RTF files.
I want to make the files on my desk top smaller with out having to move them into a compressed file. I just want them to look really small on my desktop.
How do I copy images from a photo memory card to my Mac Book Pro (Os x) ? I tried earlier and apparently removed the images from the memory card. I don't want to remove them from the card, only copy to my MacBook.
I just have a quick question for someone who may know a bit more than I do. I remember that usually when I pushed the latch release button on my Macbook Pro, the display lid would pop up so it was easy to open it. Now, however, when I press the release button the lid doesn't pop up at all. This makes it a little bit more annoying to open. Is this normal as time passes? Or should the display lid always pop up?
My concerns are that it might be too close to the screen and that I paid $1000 for a problem. Is there any way that I might be able to fix it without going to the Apple Store?
So I have had my new aluminum macbook for 2 weeks now and love it except for one issue. About once or twice a minute it makes a really annoying popping sound from the right speaker. It sounds like a crackle and then a pop. It happens if volume is up or muted, headphones plugged in/no headphones, music/video playing or not. Basically it happens all the time, nothing will stop the sound.
My question is should this be something I worry about, and get replaced/fixed? This is my first macbook and love everything about it except this popping sound. I have yet to contact applecare or take it to the store as I'm a busy college student and the store is an hour or so away. Just wanted to get your guys opinions on this issue first.
I have a problem with a "q" button on my 2.4 Alu Makbook. If I press (normal gentle) the button several times near the left edge, the right edge of the button would pop out.
To put it back in I would have to push the button hard until a little click.
I took the button out completely and there is nothing wrong with it visually. Reattached and it still keeps popping out.
The fanny thing is that I only use macbook connected to the external monitor and keyboard so I really used a built in keyboard one or two times.
Has anyone had anything like that? Is there a way to fix it? Should I take to Apple Store?
