MacBook Pro :: Conflicting & Wrong About Cycling & Discharging?

Mar 1, 2010

In anticipation of picking up a MBP when they're eventually refreshed (though I'll wait a couple weeks to see if there are any reported problems, as I went through 4 defective 27" iMacs recently), I was reading about battery use/care in a forum thread. Then I just checked the Laptop Battery Guide ( [URL] listed at the topic of this forum section and found 2 issues I'm curious about:

1) There are 2 differing explanations of what a battery cycle is. In the "What is "full cycle"?" section, it says that a "cycle is when the total battery power is less then 50% before it is recharged." But in the "What this means" section, it says "every time your fully deplete the power equal to one maximum charge, your battery has gone through one cycle." Which one appropriately describes a full cycle?

2) The guide also says that "it is best to fully drain the battery before you charge it up again." However, this site ([URL] says the opposite. That lithium ion batteries prefer "a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible." Is the forum guide incorrect?

MacBook Pro :: Battery Slowly Discharging While Off?

Oct 5, 2010

Funny thing happened today while I took out my MBP and tapped it to the charger. The battery indicator shows one dot not being light up while my MBP was fully charged while the computer was turned off by the way. So I was wondering if over time, like say a week or two that even though your MBP is turned off can it still discharge at a slow rate.

MacBook Pro :: Battery Discharging During Standby?

Dec 15, 2008

I have a MBP which I purchased in August of 07. I have never had a problem with it. However, recently I have noticed that the battery is discharging when the computer lid is shut and the laptop is not plugged in. This weekend I left the laptop unplugged with a full charge and when I arrived home, the battery was around 17%. Also, the health of the battery is 75%.

MacBook Pro :: Battery Fully Discharging While Plugged In

Jun 15, 2010

So today I was using my MBP that I got about a week ago and all of a sudden I got a low battery message. My MBP was plugged in at the time, and had been plugged in for about the last two days. AC adapter was plugged in and very hot i might add. MagSafe never got disconnected. After I clicked ok on the low battery message my MBP just started charging like I'd been using it on battery power and just plugged it in. I know there was no power outage or anything like that, all my computer stuff is plugged in to a UPS that beeps if it looses power and switches to the UPS battery power. I shut my MBP down when I went to work and when I came back it took a good min before it made the powering on noise and the apple appeared. I checked my battery health and capacity through the system profiler and the condition is normal and it has 7 cycles on it.

MacBook Air :: Cycling The Battery 1.6/80?

Is this normal for someone who hasn't cycled it yet? I also can't seem to find the battery cycling tutorial,

OS X :: Finder Keeps Cycling Me Out Of Apps

Feb 17, 2009

Why finder keeps cycling me out of whatever app I am working in. It does not close the app, but no matter if I am typing or clicking it goes to finder then I can click back in my app and continue. 20-30 seconds later it does the same thing. It started about 2 weeks ago when I was surfing the web. I got a message about a dangerous site. Is it possible that I got a virus?

Software :: Cycling Windows Using The Keyboard?

Dec 25, 2010

I HATE Apple's way to do macros and keyboard shortcuts (preferences -> keyboard -> keyboard shortcuts). It's ackward, non-intuitive and inefficient.

** C'mon Apple*! **

So I'm now looking for an utility (a prefs pane ?) that define keyboard shortcuts to cycle through all open windows in OS X. I didn't found any yet.

Hardware :: External HD Rapid Cycling?

Dec 24, 2010

I have a 500GB LaCie external HD, about two years old, with two partitions. It continually fires itself up (whirring noise as if transferring) and off every 5-10 seconds. Oddly, when I demount it, the problem goes away. presumably it's not just the HD - something on the Mac is winding it up.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: What Apps Are Open Without Cycling Through Them

Jun 16, 2012

I do not get the Mac OS which I am have to use part of the time. I'm not hostile to it I just don't get it. I also have to use various versions of Windows in other settings. When one works with multiple applications, which for me is all day,  they overlap in a jumble on the screen unless manually configured. The icon bar/dock at the bottom is sort of useless because it does not tell you, at least I do not see how, what apps are open once they stop bouncing around or, if using a program like Word, which documents are open. The only way to check what apps are open that I see is to manually cycle through apps with the keyboard, which is sort of quaint but ineffecient and annoying On one machine which has Parallels installed with Windows 7 the Windows app icons give you far more information about Windows programs than any of the Mac applications give about Mac apps.

IMac :: IMac Airport Conflicting Hardware Specs?

Jun 30, 2010

I bought an older 17" white iMac G5 for my work shop (not taking my newer aluminum one out there!) and it is a 1.8 ghz 80gb white 1st or second gen (I have not determined if it has the ambient sensor or not as of yet). I have read conflicting specs on whether or not this unit takes airport or airport extreme cards. Does anyone know for SURE? It will be a few days until I have this in my hands to look and I'd like to pre-order the card to expedite getting it set up.

I SHOULD be looking to an Apple A1126 Airport card if I am reading right.

Power Mac G5 :: Frequent Required Power Cycling Of Dsl Modem?

Nov 18, 2007

I have the problem that I need to frequently power cycle (shut off and on) my dsl modem to maintain a reasonable speed with my internet connection. It is making the internet experience pretty user unfriendly. Does any one know whether there is a way to optimize my internet connection such that this is not required so frequently (couple times a day)? I am on my second dsl modem, and the same problem has occurred with each of them. ATT simply advises me that my solution is to power cycle the modem to sync the system, whatever that means.

MacBook Air :: IStat Menus Are Wrong?

Oct 25, 2009

Just a strange occurrence this evening: I just watched a DVD on superdrive: when it finished, I ejected it and glanced at my Finder menu bar. IStat Menus gave me a temp of 135 and rising (went as high as 140 degrees a few minutes after ejecting and shutting down DVD Player). But the fans aren't on at all--never came on, as far as I can tell--and the MBA feels cool to the touch. Now it's maybe 20 minutes later and iStat reads temps as still at 115 degrees. But my laptop feels totally cool to the touch. I restarted, hoping to reset iStat, but no change. Any idea as to what's going on?

MacBook Pro :: It Is Showing The Wrong Colors?

Mar 18, 2012

My Mac Book Pro Mid 2009 (nVIDIA M9400) is showing the wrong colors. Some grey colors are displayed brighter then they should be displayed. They look whiter. If I take a screenshot and display this picture on another screen, the colors are displayed correctly. The I've tried to calibrate the colors. That didn't solve the problem. I also tried to reset the PRAM with pressing CMD+ALT+P+R while booting. No effect. Also I installed the drivers from nVIDIA again. The only method, that worked right now is starting a game, which changes the screen resolution etc. After closing the game, the Mac is showing the colors correct.

MacBook Pro :: A Bug Or By Design: Locked Out In The Wrong Language?

Mar 7, 2012

I was writing an email in Russian when I had to leave my computer - so I locked it. When i came back, I tried to log back in. A shocking surprise: Mac was using a Russian layout and I have found no way to switch back to English to type my username and password (which are in English). I tried:

- resetting the PRAM (booting while holding option+Command+R+P)

- booting in single user mode and adding an admin user with empty username/password

- booting in single user mode and messing around with /var/log/CDIS/.custom (turned out it was set to "English" anyway)

I booted in a normal mode and started trying all random key combinations in hopes to switch to English. I frustration, I typed my password in the password box -- while using the Russian layout -- and voila - I was logged in. What happened was: when I added another layout, I had no idea that I needed to check a box to "Show input method on login screen" in a menu that is completely different from "Languages and Input" menu (in the Accounts-> Login Options). So when computer got locked, it wanted me to use the language I used last to login without providing an option of switching. I argue this is not user-friendly.

When I did select that box to show languages at login, I discovered something else: the username box wants you to use the language you used last by default (i.e. Russian), but the password box wants you to use English (that's why I was abke to login at all). Also: when focus is on the password field (and the language box show an American flag), when I go to switch the language, it shows a list of three Russian layouts of which only one is enabled -- and no English at all!

MacBook Pro 10.6.8 [url]I need someone to explain this to me...RAM usage of all open programs together amounts to approx 1.5 GB..so there should be over 2.0 GB left...why is there only 203 MB left? I'm getting so sick of this.. my computer is incredibly slow.. it's amazing how no matter what you do computers always become slow eventually, no matter what you do.. (mine is about 1 1/2 yrs old) I thought with a mac this might be different, but no dice...4 GB really should be enough, certainly for the programs I have open that show in the screenshot..(I have plenty of free room in HD, by the way, so that's not the problem)

Could it be a faulty DVI to HDMI cable? even though the lowest resolution works?

MacBook Pro :: Wrong External Monitor Resolution - Right Settings

Aug 3, 2010

I currently have a MBP1, 1 running 10.6.4 on an external monitor with the ideal resolution at 1920x1200. From time to time, when I wake my MBP from sleep through external keyboard/mouse to have it run solely on the external monitor, it sets the display at 1600x1200, so everything seems squished vertically. After a fresh reformat, the problem persists, though it is less frequent. It's just a minor annoyance that I can't seem to find a solution to fix permanently. I usually have to go to safe mode and adjust the resolution back to normal. Alternatively, only sometimes if I put it back to sleep and wake it up again with the external keyboard, it will detect the right settings.
