MacBook Air :: SSD Failure - How To Remote Reinstall
Feb 17, 2008
while enjoying a beautiful, sunny day here I was outside with my MBA surfing the web. I had a few other apps open at the same time like iTunes, QuickTime and Mail. Safari all of a sudden beach balls and I wait a bit until I try doing a force quit on it. After a while I still have no response and I cannot close it. So, I hold my breath while forcing a shutdown with the power button. To make a long story short, I ended up with the flashing question mark on the gray screen. Now I'm doing a remote reinstall from my MBP!

Macbook Pro won't boot. Symptoms preceding failure included failure to open Firefox. When trying to cold boot I can get as far as the start-up sound, the Apple logo, and the spinning whieel (spins for a bit but not for very long) and then major failure. Not running Liom.

I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.Â

I've recently attempted to install 2 sticks of 2GB RAM into my MacBook Pro, but unfortunately had jammed one stick in the lower RAM compartment (Apparently I forgot to enter it at 45) and had a rough time getting it out.
The RAM stick is busted and had to replace it, but I'm quite sure the slot might suffered a bit.
What are the signs of RAM failure?

After trying several times to upgrade to Snow Leopard and finding out, per a post here to the community, that my MacBook had a CD reader instead instead of a CD/DVD reader (you can see the whole drama here [url]..
'AmazonBasics USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive (Black)' by AmazonBasics USB 2.0 External Slim DVD Writer
and tried to upgrade to Snow Leopard from that.Everything was going great - until the two minute mark. And then the external DVD reader kept spitting out the DVD. I kept putting it back in and trying it again.
After about 10 minutes of this, I restarted the computer. It started and got the flashing question mark sign. I started the DVD reader again, and after probably 20 minutes, it started installing SNow Leopard again. And probably at the two minute mark, I got the error message "An error occurred while installing Mac OS X."Everything is siting silently now. There's an error message and a spinning wheel on my screen. The reader is silent.
I'm convinced this is a power issue - the DVD reader/player is drawing power from the Mac, but obviously, it's not enough. A search of the house has found no power adapter that works with this DVD player. I'll be going to Radio Shack tomorrow and hoping against hope they have something. And I have an appointment at the genius bar at the Apple STar on Saturday.

My 2.33GHz C2D MacBook Pro running 10.6.3 has suddenly decided it doesn't have an optical drive installed!
If I put a CD or DVD in the drive it will pull it in, spin but fail to recognise the disc. It is impossible to eject the inserted disc by any means - except by using a piece of cardboard to stop it spinning after a restart. I have tried data, audio and video CDs/DVDs.
System Profiler says I only have a hard drive attached to Serial-ATA and have no Disc Burning devices installed.
Has the optical drive failed? If so why does it still spin up if the computer doesn't know the drive is there? Does the fault lie elsewhere?

Snow Leopard says service battery, and for the 3rd time the battery has dissolved into failure in exactly the same way. Stays high for a month (99%), drops to 8x%, climbs to 9x% and then finally dies... Now, this would be my fourth (yes 4th!) battery, and the 3rd time the Laptop will have to go into an Apple store, as the power circuitry in here must have something wrong. So... new MBP time I think [Applecare for 3 years, 26 months into my 36 month warranty!]

Just experienced a hard drive failure right now on my MacBook (2007). Everything had froze and I shut it down. When I started it again, the screen was dimmed and the Apple jingle went on a louder sound then before. Is this a sure sign of a MacBook hard drive failure or would it be related to something else, for example, the logic board?
Also, what should I do now? Last full backup was 3 weeks ago and I had worked on lots of things between that period of time and now.

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz with 2GB of RAM. I can't say it's ever been magnificently fast, but I always blamed it on the memory. I've always intended on upgrading it, just never got around to it. I've also been away for 6 months, so haven't been using my computer.
But today I've been trying to use Photoshop & it's hideously slow! Even the simplest task such as a desaturate command can take as long as 2 minutes! Admittedly on a large size document.
I have iStat in the menu bar. When performing these tasks I would assume it would display some sort of indication it's processing in the CPU. But it displays Photoshop only using at much as 16% CPU & the memory having 500MB of inactive memory? My brother had been using my computer away & was constantly complaining of the speed of it. He suspects it could be a CPU issue. Am I correct in thinking Photoshop should be using more CPU when processing a task?

My laptop is MBP 13" early 2011, after using a usb bluetooth adapter( built-in bluetooth had compatiblity problem with my mobile phone) and unplug it, and then found the built-in bluetooth is not working any more, it can search devices, but it won't establish connections or pair with other devices. At firs I thought it was the bluetooth driver or configuration problem, I try to reset factory setting using the develper tool Bluetooth Explorer, then reset kext file, even tried installing a new lion, but the problem remains. So I think it's not driver/configuration problem now, it's hardware failure, but wait.. just caused by using other usb bluetooth adapter? I really can't understand why apple will let such thing happen....

Just got my new Macbook Pro Retina. Migrated my applications and data from my Macbook Air. Everything worked great. Apple Update advised that new updates were available. I accepted and ran the updates. Now it gets a kernal panic at boot. Can boot into Safe Mode however. I used Command R to reinstall OSX but that did not correct my problem. Same kernal panic persists.

I have a white mb 2.4 250 GB SD. Purchased new in late feb. The hard drive went bad in september. Then in october it happened again. My question is how many time does the hard drive have to go bad before i can get a new computer? If apple updates the macbook how do they determine which config i would get as a replacement? How would it affect apple care? i have registered it already.

As I am in the process of replacing a hard drive on a Macbook Pro, I begin to notice that there are MANY posts and experiences of individuals having to replace a dead hard drive at some time or another in their Macbooks. Is this typical? Should this be something I'm prepared to endure? Would it make more sense to buy my own hard drive in addition to a new MBP?
It's ridiculous that I even have to worry about something like this on a new purchase but I'd like to be prepared.

I wanted to reformat my mbp. In doing this, I used the 'erase and install' method in my leopard restore disk then installed bundled applications dvd that was included with it. I then installed/upgraded to snow leopard then used software update to download the updates. Before this, there seemed nothing wrong with my mbp. After downloading all the available updates (~990mb), it asked for a restart to which i agreed . i watched it while it was installing the updates but for some reason before it was able to end, stated that an error occurred thus it restarted. Now i get stuck with the startup screen (the one with the apple logo in the middle with a rotating circle of lines just below it). It wouldn't stop so i hard reseted it but to no avail, still stuck with the startup screen.

2008 mac-book pro, started having these warning screens come up by which it states that i have to turn off/ restart ( only option as no other controls work). These became more frequent until yesterday i turned it off as per warning to then restart but now it wont turn on at all.
All that happens now is that when press the power button the fans come on for about 5-10 seconds and then it just all abruptly turns off, the screen stays blank and there is also no start up sound either.

I take a chainsaw to my Mid 2009 Mac Book Pro.It had been pretty faultless until recently when it started being slow to boot and generally just hanging for a short periods, and then carrying on as normal. Then I had major errors on the 500gb hard disk, which prevented the machine from booting. Using disk utilty, I decided that I needed to wipe and start again. Fortunately much of the data was backed up. I re-installed and all was well for a short while. However, about 3 weeks later I had the same issue, and so I decided to replace the hard disk, even though it did not seem to have any errors or SMART warnings.I put in a new 750Gb disk, and all was well for a few months. Last week I was working abroad in Norway. I rebooted into boot camp to run some software and then back again into OSX and then disaster struck again. (Strangely my boot camp partition has had no issues at all on either hard disk). I couldn't boot into OSX and the emergency recovery (I'm on Lion) came up. Disk Utilitiy told me that the it couldn;t repair the drive.
Now after two hard drives I am a little stuck. The incovenince is massive as I am a working all over the place and rely on the my normally trusty MBP. I am almost ready to replace the MBP, but in truth I can't really afford to do so (in these economic times). Can anyone point me as to why this may be happening. I am hoping it may be bad Ram (easier to replace than a board), but can anyone point as to how to diagnose it. The apple hardware test program I remember for the pre-OSX days doesn;t seem to available now.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), 15" top of the line late 2013.Â
Problem: When running computer in clamshell mode, it will often log me out automatically and/or crash the computer and/or cause an auto restart.Â
I've run a hardware test by holding down D during restart and it didn't show any issues there.Â
I've run a sleep/wake test in Terminal using a command I found on Google:
pmset -g log|grep -e " Sleep " -e " Wake "Â

My primary MacBook is suddenly now powering up - Tried the power management reset....removing battery/power and attempting restart after 12 hours and so forth. Does this sound like Logic board? Is there a chance the HD data can be retrieved if it would be installed in another MacBook or...if Logic board is repaired?

I've had my iPhone 3g 8gb since June 2008 and loved every minute of it. It's been through it all. Even dropped out of a helicopter last week. Ok it was only a fall of around 6ft but still, it sounds epic. I've recently gotten a hold of a Macbook 2.1 2ghz 13" white. It's a late 2006 model and the drive has failed. I planned on replacing the drive myself and apple have kindly sent me the recovery dvds free of charge. Tiger 10.4.11. I read on here about the extended replacement scheme for failed drives on here last night and I think I qualify, however I may still put my own drive in it. Out of my stick just to get things moving along. Once that has been done I plan on upgrading to snow leopard 10.6. I'm curious to find out what drives this machine will support and how much ram it will take and benefit from.

white 2007 macbook has been acting up a lot lately.
- it shuts down when the you close the lid (ie. doesn't sleep)
- every 5 minutes or so it makes a sound as if it was loading a cd/dvd
- now it takes about three attempts to actually turn the computer on (and takes ages to boot up)
- freezes when you try to restart the computer
- we just tried to attach an external harddrive, however it is now not being recognised (just in the past couple of minutes). Nothing is being recognised as being attached to the usb slots.
It is still in Applecare warranty so I will take it into hopefully tomorrow, but just wondering if there is anything I can do now to help it, or what the problem may be. I checked the hard drive in disk utility and the SMART status said 'verified'. The harddrive was replaced in the macbook about two years ago (the first one just died suddenly). Does this mean another HD failure is imminent? (I'm a bit concerned because now we can't back it up since it won't recognised any usb/external harddrive). It's running Leopard 10.5.8 (i hink).

My macbook was running at basic, normal speed, nothing too serious for a year-old laptop, but suddenly one day, my performance dropped sharply, to the point where it would take up to ten minutes to attempt to get to a page, and songs would freeze for about a minute about 3 times per song in iTunes. It all started when I attempted to import a CD into iTunes (it was downloaded onto my HD, not imported directly from a CD), and I got the message "attempting to copy to the disk macintosh hd failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." About this time, my computer started acting unusually slow, (the problems mentioned above).
I did some looking into this, and did both suggestions listed here (Disk permission repair, then manual iTunes folder permissions change):
http://discussions.apple.com/message...623410#7623410.
After this my problems were eased for a little bit, I was even able to import the folder I had been unable to import earlier. But I tried then to import the very next CD (it was an 8-CD set), and then I got the same error. Thinking it was possibly a problem with a corrupted/infected file, so I ran a scan through my whole computer (using McAfee), which didn't return any problems. Then, on top of this, my mac suddenly stopped burning CDs, saying that the CD failed because of a "medium write error."

I got a 2008 MacBook that has a misbehaving backlight. Just recently, the backlight refused to go on for any amount of time.Toggling the brightness from (0) to (1) bar turned it on for varyings amounts of time lower than one second.I continued to toggle the brightness in this fashion to use the computer for a time.Occasionally, the screen would remain lit for a little over a second and dim again.I changed the power settings from power saving to performance and back to power saving. Then, I opened up Chrome and the backlight remained on.It still remains on, as I am somewhat unwilling to test opening and closing the screen.I can, however, now vary screen brightness fully.tl;dr - Backlight was finicky, but is now functioning normally.I suspect the backlight is going to malfunction completely in the near future.

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch, and the Messages application has been installed and functioning well for the past year. A few hours ago, my MacBook ran out of battery and died on me. This caused a number of applications to function incorrectly, however, after a restart all of the applications EXCEPT Messages work correctly. Now whenever I start up the messages app and try to send a message to one of my contacts, their name appears in red and I receive a message that says "###-###-#### is not registered with iMessage." This occurs even though the contacts DO have iMessage and were working in the past. None of the contacts work currently.Â
I tried signing out of Messages, restarting my computer, restarting iMessage from my phone, deleting my plist file, but none of these seem to alleviate the issue.
