MacBook Pro :: Change Automatic Updates In Time Machine From Hourly?
Jun 12, 2012
Is there any way to change the automatic updates in Time Machine from hourly?I am a home user and backing up every hour for me is overkill. Is there any way to change the intervals to say monthly?

In exploring my new macbook pro, I've somehow set it to say the time every hour. How do I get it to stop this annoying feature! I forget which menu I turned it on from.

No hourly backups to an external USB2 drive. It did the initial backup and manual backups fine. Just no hourly. Says it's going to do the next backup, that time passes and it does nothing. No errors reported, just no backups. Click to "Backup Now" and it does so happily.

I am having this problem since may be a week. I am suspecting that it started after updating to 10.7.4 Lion. Every hour, in my case at 47 minutes of the hour, I get a spinning beach ball and my MacBook becomes (sometimes completely) unresponsive. This happened in several programs including, Safari, Word, PowerPoint, Mail, Address Book etc etc.
Once I noticed that when this was happening my Time Machine icon was spinning (preparing backup). So I thought it might be related to that. Especially since time Machine tries to backup every hour. Now I usually backup every couple of days by connecting my USB drive, and have never had these problems before. I am guessing that every time Time Machine tries to make an hourly backup my computer for some reason becomes unresponsive.
I kept an eye out for it and indeed every time it happens it is at minute 47 of the hour in my case. And it happens every hour. Although I usually do not see the spinning Time Machine icon since my MacBook usually becomes almost completely unresponsive and reacts to almost nothing. I am guessing that's why I only noticed the time Machine icon spinning just once.

I just bought my time capsule. It works doing backups manually but the button is in 'on' and the next backup field always says 'automatic backups off'.

When it says it has to re-start the computer, does that mean restarting VMware, or actually restarting the Mac?

Ever since I upgraded to Lion my iMac freezes or nearly freezes for 5 - 10 minutes every hour while Time Machine updates the back up. What to do? I have tried everything I can think of but its only improved from total freeze while Time Machine backs up to freeze with an occasional few seconds of activity.Â

I am no longer receiving scheduled automatic security updates and unable to find the latest on the Apple site. I understand there are threats out there and am very reluctant to link onto any diagnosis' and cures unless through the Apple site.

How can I change time machine settings? I only want Time Machine to backup my Home Folders and the items on the desktop. Currently, it's backing up more files which overwhelm my backup drive. How do I get it to back up Home/Desktop ONLY?

Has anyone figured out how to change the time machine backup interval in SNOW LEOPARD?
i don't want a third party app or anything, i just want to go in terminal or textedit and set a new interval.
for any of you who are going to tell me to modify the com.apple.backupd-auto.plist file. i cant find one, and i believe this is unique to 10.6. there is a regular backupd.plist file, a -wake.plist, and -attach.plist, but none of them list the "start interval" key that i saw.

I just got a new external hard drive (500 gigs), and already backed up my mac once. Now it does it every hour. But I want it to back up like once a day, not 24 times a day. How do I change the back up schedule?

How do you change the name of the Time Machine backup drive? I'm backing up to an external hard drive with name "untitled." I'd like to change name of the drive, but if I physically change the name on the desktop, Time Machine tells me that it cannot find the backup drive.

how you change these icons as the usual method of just copying and pasting the image in does not work. Would also like to not have to download an app to be able to do this if possible.Â

My 9 year old son has a severe visual imparement. As a result on my 24 inch imac he finds it best when the resolution is set to 1280 x 800. I on the other hand find that the highest resolution works best for me.
He has a hard time finding the menu to change the resolution when its in its highest resolution mode without my help, so I would like to set it up that when he logs in as him the resolution is automatically set. I can not seem to figure out how to tie that setting to his account.

I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

I recently moved from Illinois to Ohio. Now, when I go to either google maps or the time zone settings on my Macbook Pro, it thinks I am in Illinois. Google maps will update eventually to the correct location, however the the time zone in OS X will not. I have tried deleting .plist files and rebooting.

Is there any way to set up one of my external drives to clone the behavior of my main drive? For example, I have a mac mini with 2 main drives, and I have 3 external HDs (one of which is for Time Machine). However, Time Machine is a bit annoying to have on all the time, so I am looking for a different option. Â
Here's what I need to do: I use one of my main HDs as my music drive (I'm a musician). I end up creating my music projects there and then back them up by manually transfering them to my xHDs. This process takes a long time because the files are huge and I don't do it after every project, so I move over a lot of GBs when I do this. Â
Is there any way to set things up where when I create a project (or any file) in my main HD that it automatically copies in real time to one of my xHDs?

Had a problem with finding back files I just worked on. E.g. I was preparing an email with attachment. I would amend or create a file, save it somewhere. Then when I wanted to insert a file the dialog box would dump the file frustratingly right down below under the 'No Date' heading. I tried disabling the automatic time zone setting and it appears to have resolved the problem for now.

This evening I some how accidently "restored" a document I had been working on to a version I started about a month ago. I honestly have no idea how this happened since I hadn't even opened Time Machine when noticed the document was the old version (the program and document had been open on my laptop for days). Anyway, I thought maybe I could just go back to the version from yesterday or a few days ago, but it seems that once today's version is restored to March 28th's version, all subsequent versions are also restored. If there is any way to find a previous version of this document (that is not the March 28th one!), I would be estactic.

I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage. So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

I have 3 email accounts that I have added to my Mac Mail. It seems to have chosen my school email account as the default email so every time I send an email, it says it's coming from this school account. I have a primary gmail account that I would like to use as a default. Is there a way to stop this automatic selection every time I compose a message? Even if I select the account I want to use when I compose a new email message, it still sends it out showing the wrong account as the sender.

At the time it seemed very practical to use a Time Capsule to share files between the members of the company (we are just 4) and this way use it as backup and server.
As we use it as the company file server to share file between member, we found out that it would be needed to make backups every now and then (preferably on monthly basis).
I bought another normal external hard drive, plugged it into the time capsule and made the backup.
