If I replaced the optical drive in a MBP with an SSD and used that as the boot drive, and used the HDD to keep data on would there be a noticeable speed boost. I'm just confused cause if the data is on the HDD, then it wouldn't really matter if I had an SSD cause the machine would still be constantly reading from the slow drive.

It seems as if many people on here use dedicated boot drive with faster read times for applications. I was wondering if partitioning my boot drive would be beneficial in anyway. My boot drive in Bay 1 is a 1TB, it stores everything except my iTunes library, then in Bay 2 I have another 1TB drive that I use CCC weekly to mirror the data from drive 1. If I was to partition the boot drive to use store my applications, and system software and moved all my data (documents, pictures, videos) to the partitioned part of the drive would there be any benefit?

View 17 Replies View RelatedI run SSD/HDD, my HDD in the optibay is broken, I stuck it in a external and it makes finder freeze, it got bumped around too much so I want to put a new one back in the 'correct place' for a spinner, and stick the SSD in the optibay.(I figure the extra 2% of shock protection offered by the orange rubber circle things is worth the trouble of moving everything).
I am also going to buy a WD 3 platter 1TB laptop drive, and I read that they fit fine in the regular spot in MBP's (I'm going to open and measure in a min.)Anyways, there's no BIOS, only EFI, so how to I pick what drive to boot from? with 10.6 is it as simple as holding option down on boot, and picking my 'OSX' HDD, and then it will auto boot from that until I specify otherwise? (I ask because before 10.6 people on here were always talking about how to switch boot drives.)
I've been hearing good things about the Spinpoint Drives and the 750GB ones are coming down in price.Here is my current setup1 - 500MB Drive - Leopard2 - 320MB Drive - Vista 643 - 500MB Drive - FAT32 (Shared, Irrelevant)I plan on replacing drives 1 and 2 with 750GB Spinpoint drives.My question is, can I boot off of the Leopard dvd and put in Drive 1 and NewDrive1 and just clone it, and do the same for Drive2 and NewDrive2 and clone it? And then go into Leopard and resize the HFS partition, and go into Vista and resize the NTFS partition?

What are the main advantages of dvorak, and how long does it take most people to learn? Would it be worth me mastering, even though I am pretty fast on a regular keyboard?

We use Exchange 2007 and change our passwords every 90 days.One concern is when the user is out of the office the cached password can become out of sync with the domain password.

I am thinking of getting a new iMac and would like to know the whys and wherefores of a solid state drive. The one that is sold with the iMac is 250 gig. Does that mean it's storage capacity is lower than a normal 1TB hard drive?

I have the base model 15" MacBook Pro from January 2008 (2.4 GHz Santa Rosa, if I recall correctly). My wife's MacBook just died, so she needs a new computer. She uses hers for checking email, surfing the Web, iPhoto, iTunes, etc. I use mine for the same, but also for hobby-level photography, music recording (GarageBand now, but eventually Logic), and art programs. We're considering two options: 1) She gets a new MacBook, and I keep my current MBP. 2) I get a new 13" MBP (the base model has the same size hard drive and amount of RAM as my 15" MBP) and she gets my old MBP. 95% of the time, I keep my MBP connected to an external monitor, so the extra portability of the 13" would suit me fine. My wife never connects an external monitor, so she'd be thrilled with my old 15". My question is whether the current base-model 13" MBP has any performance or feature benefits over the 2008 MBP that would warrant spending the extra $200 over just buying a new MacBook for my wife.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.

Last week I finally upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7, but now my Mac Pro (2008) won't boot properly. It'll start to boot with the gray screen and the Apple logo, but then the entire screen goes gray and it just locks up there. However, if I reboot and hold down the Option key to bring up the list of bootable drives that works fine. I've checked my Startup Drive settings and the proper drive is selected. why it won't boot on it's own anymore? Holding down the Option key is getting old.

I decided that I couldn't wait for Gainestown and ordered a 2.8x8 MP today. I'm going to get another 8GB of RAM (I assume 10GB in matched pairs will still perform at full speed). My real dilemma is a Boot/Storage solution-I'm moving from a Dual 867 G4, so all my current drives, both internal and external are IDE, which basically means I'm starting over as far as internal drives goes. The G4 power supply gave out so I'm getting this external enclosure to put my old drives into for file recovery. As far as new drives go, I can't figure out what to do. I'll spare you my million iterations of drive configs I've sketched over the past two days.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.

I am curious as to the benefits of of the following:
Drive 1 (640)
partition 1: 150gig for OS
partition 2: Bootcamp
remainder: Offline storage
Drive 2 (640)
partition 1: Applications
remainder: music/photos
(scratch disk here?)
Drive 3: (500)
Time machine
Would there be a noticeable benefit to having the applications being separate from the OS boot drive? What if anything else should be split across multiple HDs to increase speed? I've heard of moving the swap file from elsewhere on the forum but I am not sure as to what exactly that is nor the benefits of doing it.
My final question(s) is how exactly I could go by moving my application folder to another drive separate from the OS drive? Just drag and drop? What is this deal with making an alias?
My internal 1TB hard drive on my iMac is dead and I don't have the money to replace it at the moment. I have everything backed up on an external 1TB drive using Time Machine. As a workaround for the time being,Is there any way I can install the system on the external drive and use that as the boot drive without erasing the Time Machine Backups? It seems to me I would have to have two partitions for the external drive, one for the system, and one for Time Machine. But is there any way to add a partition without erasing the existing one with Time Machine only on it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a second HD in my Macbook Pro via Optibay.1st drive is SSD and second "normal" HD for data.When I boot I get a strange loop with the apple logo appearing and disappearing. It looks like my Mac does not know which of the two drives to choose for booting. Only when I press the options button before booting do I get the Bootcamp selector for Mac or Win which are both on the SSD.
As I use the second drive only for data, I want to make the SSD drive the "primary boot drive" without me having to press the option button on startup every time.
Ok I connected my Air to a LG drive GSA-E50L USB DVD drive. It seems to work fine in Windows and OS X. For booting it does work with the OS X dvd's.
However, it refuses to boot from a Windows XP installation disk.
I've tried different boot disks aswell. No luck.
When I boot pressing the option key, the DVD drive is one of the options. It says "Windows CD". I then choose it. It starts reading the CD and then the apple sign is displayed. The apple sign changes into a stop sign and goes back to the apple sign again.
Does anyone know what is going on?
Has anyone been able to boot from a Windows disk with a non Apple USB drive?
I had to cold boot my macbook after a freezeup. Everything runs fine except disk utility showed a verifying disk result of "needs repair." Unfortunately my dvd drive is broken. Is there anyway for me to boot it from the CD with a broken DVD drive? I have a iMac at home to if there is anyway to use its drive to bootup my macbook....

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a previous generation 13" macbook with the aluminum case but no graphics card. Anyways, it recently started not going past the grey screen and it wont stop thinking. I tried booting from the CD drive, and once selected, it just restarts rather than booting into the CD drive. I did all of the resetting of the Pram, holding down the power button for 10 seconds, etc. So, I tried removing the hard drive and putting it into an external enclosure, then with my Macbook Pro, loaded Leopard OSX onto it after erasing the drive.
The method I used for loading the OS was simply putting the Leopard CD into my MBP drive, and then going through the normal install process after restarting but selecting the external drive rather than my MBP to install it on. It appeared that it went well, and even restarted, booting into the external drive. It wanted me to go through the setup process. However, when I put it back in the Macbook, it now just constantly restarts before you see the apple logo, and refuses to even give me the option of booting from CD.
