MacBook :: Constant Restarts And Not Boot From CD Drive
Mar 26, 2010
I have a previous generation 13" macbook with the aluminum case but no graphics card. Anyways, it recently started not going past the grey screen and it wont stop thinking. I tried booting from the CD drive, and once selected, it just restarts rather than booting into the CD drive. I did all of the resetting of the Pram, holding down the power button for 10 seconds, etc. So, I tried removing the hard drive and putting it into an external enclosure, then with my Macbook Pro, loaded Leopard OSX onto it after erasing the drive.
The method I used for loading the OS was simply putting the Leopard CD into my MBP drive, and then going through the normal install process after restarting but selecting the external drive rather than my MBP to install it on. It appeared that it went well, and even restarted, booting into the external drive. It wanted me to go through the setup process. However, when I put it back in the Macbook, it now just constantly restarts before you see the apple logo, and refuses to even give me the option of booting from CD.

I run SSD/HDD, my HDD in the optibay is broken, I stuck it in a external and it makes finder freeze, it got bumped around too much so I want to put a new one back in the 'correct place' for a spinner, and stick the SSD in the optibay.(I figure the extra 2% of shock protection offered by the orange rubber circle things is worth the trouble of moving everything).
I am also going to buy a WD 3 platter 1TB laptop drive, and I read that they fit fine in the regular spot in MBP's (I'm going to open and measure in a min.)Anyways, there's no BIOS, only EFI, so how to I pick what drive to boot from? with 10.6 is it as simple as holding option down on boot, and picking my 'OSX' HDD, and then it will auto boot from that until I specify otherwise? (I ask because before 10.6 people on here were always talking about how to switch boot drives.)

I've been hearing good things about the Spinpoint Drives and the 750GB ones are coming down in price. Here is my current setup1 - 500MB Drive - Leopard2 - 320MB Drive - Vista 643 - 500MB Drive - FAT32 (Shared, Irrelevant)I plan on replacing drives 1 and 2 with 750GB Spinpoint drives. My question is, can I boot off of the Leopard dvd and put in Drive 1 and NewDrive1 and just clone it, and do the same for Drive2 and NewDrive2 and clone it? And then go into Leopard and resize the HFS partition, and go into Vista and resize the NTFS partition?

When I travel I would generally take a small travel drive that is clone of my white MacBook as a rescue drive. Now that I have the MBA I am wondering if I could just clone my 11.6 MBA to a 64 GB flash drive and then if the worst happened I could reverse clone from the flash drive to the MBA.

My macbook sometimes reboots while I am using it. I may be running 2-3 programs and it randomly restarts but no other problems as far as I can see occur. Does anyone know why it randomly restarts? It does not happen that often but every once in a while.

So I recently purchased one of the discontinued unibody MBPs from my local Apple reseller, got the warranty reset to the proper date, etc etc. However, I have had this thing randomly, without warning, restart on me. There's no real rhyme nor reason to these restarts. It has happened twice now. Once while I was opening World of Warcraft and another just while the computer was sitting idle. The only warning sign is that my USB mouse goes all wonky and jumps around then BAM restart. Currently I'm running the Apple Hardware Test on it and typing this from my iMac across the room, it hasn't failed anything yet, but then again it's only been running for a few minutes. Does anyone else know of a possible fix? Is this something I'm going to have to ship off for repairs? I'm a little unhappy that one of my speakers sounds as though it is failing as well, so I should probably just buck up and send it off anyway while it's still under warranty. Ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came up with nothing. I performed the extended test so as to be certain, no failures.

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I recently updated to 10.9.4. The computer randomly restarts every once in a while and gives me an error when it reboots saying that there was an issue. When I log in, I choose to report the issue to Apple and it shows me what it will send. I see that it says there was a GPU Panic, which I have seen on other mid-2010 MacBook Pros after updating to 10.9. The computer now is restarting within 10 minutes of me logging into it, rendering it completely useless.
I will not tolerate a $1,500 computer restarting every 10 minutes because of an error on Apple's part. They allowed me to upgrade without giving me any sort of a warning that bad things could happen.

If I have iTunes on an SSD drive (the boot drive in my Mac Mini), can it read the music library on a second rotational hard drive? I'd like not to have the large music library on a 120GB SSD drive.

This is bad and old, and full of lessons about backing up. Anyway, internal boot drive crashed a week ago, and internal optical drive is busted. New external LaCie dvd burner works fine, but all attempts to start up from Tiger, Leopard and Diskwarrior installation disks just end up back in OS10.3 on my external LaCie FW drive. I've tried many things: unplugged everything; switched external LaCie to USB (wouldn't boot), unplugged power from internal optical drive so Mac wouldn't look there first (somebody suggested that). Attempts to start up installers from mounted DVDs result in installer screen with restart button, which, when clicked on, results in... you guessed it... boot back to dreaded 10.3 system. Night owls and westcoasters, I am up for hours yet, pulling hair.

Last week I finally upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7, but now my Mac Pro (2008) won't boot properly. It'll start to boot with the gray screen and the Apple logo, but then the entire screen goes gray and it just locks up there. However, if I reboot and hold down the Option key to bring up the list of bootable drives that works fine. I've checked my Startup Drive settings and the proper drive is selected. why it won't boot on it's own anymore? Holding down the Option key is getting old.

I find 90% of the time I watch a YouTube video (standard def, normal sized) my MacBook gets hot and the fans spin up. Most of the time they'll go to ~4200rpm. Yet the other 10% of videos, I stay at 1800rpm and 50C. How is this possible? Both times I've just had Firefox open.

Whenever i open an application both of the fans go to 6000+ rpm in a couple minutes give or take.Strangely web browsing doesn't cause this speed but if a youtube video is played it gets up there fast.Applications such as quicktime and logic gets up there no matter what is played.I have fan control and smcfancontrol, 40GB free, software updated, tried the reset thing (turn off, hold power button, boot), cleared printing operations. The only thing smcfancontrol does for me is it slows down the fans quicker whenever i close all my applications.

Before anything, I had spilt some OJ on my mac (I'm clumsy ), and I took it to the store and they fixed it but they did say that the acid could possibly get farther into the components than they thought, in case that has to do with these incidents.
Anyways, I had noticed that my Mac had not been charging properly. It would charge about 1-6% and then stop. I would even go out and leave it charging and it still wouldn't charge. So I unplug it and it restarts every time, and THEN it starts charging 1% before I have to unplug it again, which causes it to restart again.
Should I replace anything? Take it to the store? Or should I just get a new Mac?

I decided that I couldn't wait for Gainestown and ordered a 2.8x8 MP today. I'm going to get another 8GB of RAM (I assume 10GB in matched pairs will still perform at full speed). My real dilemma is a Boot/Storage solution-I'm moving from a Dual 867 G4, so all my current drives, both internal and external are IDE, which basically means I'm starting over as far as internal drives goes. The G4 power supply gave out so I'm getting this external enclosure to put my old drives into for file recovery. As far as new drives go, I can't figure out what to do. I'll spare you my million iterations of drive configs I've sketched over the past two days.

I got out the shower n pressed the pause button to stop the music. While that i notice couple of spot of water around my return button just a little. Nothing happened to the computer after using it for about 1 hours. So i left and came home around 7 hours later, got on the macbook air n then it kept prompting the shutdown menu option screen. From there it would just go to constant reboot. Is this due to water damage at all? or is it just a coincidence. Because my black macbook has had way more water on it before n its perfectly fine.

I'm using my Mac on an external monitor with a USB keyboard/mouse and the lid closed. When I put it to sleep using the remote, it switches off but then re-awakens about 5 seconds later. It's really annoying as it's usually when I'm in bed after watching a video and am too tired to get up and switch it off manually. How to make it sleep? Could it be the USB peripherals making it act this way? If so, how can I stop my Mac from waking on USB?

I have had my MBA for almost a week, and I've had no issues so far. Until now. This is the case: The fan operates as it should. It stays on 2500 rpm at light use, and increases with heavier use. At 2500 rpm I was not able to hear it without putting my ear next to the keyboard. That was yesterday. Today the fan produces a new noise. It isn't very loud, but clearly audible at 2500 rpm in a quiet environment. It's a low, constant, buzzing kind of noise. It also increases with fan speed.

My new MBP is constantly either reading or writing to the disk. I had the problem before, reinstalled OS X, everything seemed better until it started again. Disk seems good, smart checked, tried to run diskwarrior but unfortunately not supported by this Mac.
It seems to heat up quite a bit too.
Activity monitor shows no cpu hogger and doesnt give info on the software writing / reading to disk

On 6/27 I upgraded from 10.8.x (don't remember which version specifically) to 10.9.3. Since then, my 2012 Macbook Pro has been crashing every 20-90 minutes - a complete crash/reboot. The crashes happen regardless of what apps I'm running - there does not seem to be a particular trigger. Upon rebooting, all of the open apps/windows reload and I get the standard "do you want to report this to apple" message. The only time it does NOT crash is if I'm not actively using it - e.g. if I let it go to sleep at night, it will not crash overnight.
Everything was fine before I upgraded to 10.9.3, and I have made no other changes to my setup.
The first thing I tried was creating a new user so I could see if the problem was isolated to my user account - the crashes persisted even on a completely new user. Next, I tried booting from partition and erasing the hard drive entirely, reinstalling the OS, and then choosing "setup from time capsule" - no dice; still crashes. Finally, I tried creating a new user and then using "migration assistant" to migrate my user info, and while the migration assistant itself worked just fine, it's still crashing.
(Unfortunately, my time capsule backup is from right AFTER I upgraded to 10.9.3, so that might be the reason that those "solutions" didn't fix anything)
At this point I would even be willing to start completely from scratch (at least I could import all of my documents, music, etc from my hard drive), but there is no way for me to force it to start "fresh" - if I boot from partition so I can erase the hard drive and then reinstall the OS, I can't get past the Disk Utility screen (so my only option is to set up from the time capsule!).

I Have a MacBook Pro mid 2009 13 inch and since yesterday the computer will not start, it simply shows a white screen, then the apple sign and then after several seconds this comes up and then it repeats again and again forever with a message that says " your computer restarted because of a problem wait or press any key to continue" but then after about five or six times it comes up wit. A screen that looks like the startup screen but in the middle of the grey/white page there is a circle with a cross through it where the apple sign should be.

MacBook Core Duo, Leopard 10.5.5, Keynote 4.0.3
Periodically when I play a Keynote presentation my MacBook will spontaneously restart. I've searched many different forums and found many others with the same problem, but no working fix yet. I have a huge presentation next week and obviously I can no longer trust Keynote to do it (quite a few ugly stories on the other forums about embarrassing keynote crashes in front of large audiences).

I have a late 2009 model MacBook Pro and lately I've noticed that it sometimes - seemingly at random - restarts itself when I tell it to shutdown (through the Apple menu then Shut Down)
Anyone encountered this or know how to fix it? I haven't had any other problems except for a month or two back it did an update then stuck on a blue screen with a little loading icon like you get under the apple when it starts up normally. After half an hour of waiting, I performed a hard reset, and it worked fine.

I have a Macbook Pro from 2007 (aluminium keyboard). Everything was working great until a couple of days ago, when I replaced the battery.
No every time I choose to shut down the computer, it will restart and NOT shutdown. I have tried several things - the only thing that seems to work is to unplug the power chord - then it will shut down, but if the power plug is connected, the computer basically can't shut down - it just restarts.
