I already know the benefits and disadvantages of using sleep and shut down. What I do want to know is what is actually better when you consider extending the life of a computer. Which one stresses the computer more?
View 17 RepliesNew mac user, just bought a new MBA -- when should I just close the lid vs shutting it down completely? i.e. is there a general guideline where if you're not going to use it for at least, say, an hour, then shut down but if you are then close the lid, etc. Also let's assume we are talking about the MBA not being plugged in for this scenario but operating off battery.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy iMac keeps shutting down in after about an hour in sleep mode. I have to press the power button to turn back on. Energy saver settings are still default settings. I'm running osx 10.7.4.

So this past week when my mini hasn't stayed in sleep mode, it shuts itself down about a minute later after being in sleep mode. I haven't changed any of my settings in a year and a half, normally it would stay in sleep mode until i come back to it and logged on again. When it does shut down i just cannot power back on i have to unplug the adapter then replug it in for it to start up again. I've searched google and on here for possible ideas. I wouldn't think it to be overheating since I'm not running any applications when i put it in sleep. It might be the power supply since i have to do that process to get it to work again. Let me know what could be causing this or ways to troubleshoot this problem.

Mostly when I am streaming video..or at times the fan comes on, it sounds super high then boom. sleep mode again. After hitting the space bar, it comes back on, but it'll happen again shortly after. View 5 Replies View RelatedAs of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.
Is there any way to tell when the new processors are in turbo mode and shutting a core down and increasing clock frequency?Would be cool if there was a way to force this and see performance differences...

I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to zero the data on an iBook hard drive before selling it. When I connect it to my Powermac via firewire in Target Disk Mode, it shuts down completely about 30 minutes into the proceedure (and yes, the power adapter is connected).
This has now happened 3 times in a row.
When I choose sleep from the Apple menu my Mac Mini with 10.7.4 just shuts off without sleeping. Choosing shut-off however results in an ongoing gray screen with a rotating sign (not the beachball), until I press the on/off switch for about 10 seconds.
Resetting the SMC does not help. Programs like DiskWarrior, Apple hardware test do not find any problems.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI sometimes forgotten to unplug the device before closing the lid. Such as when I'm in a hurry and close the lid of the MBP, only then realize that my iPhone is still attached.
I don't want to put unnecessary stress on the harddrive by it going to sleep, waking up, then sleep again just because that unplugging an USB device woke it up. I notice that this does not happend on my Windows laptop.
Just wondering as I've heard a few people just let them sleep I always shut mine down?

Whenever I close the lid to my MacBook it'll go to sleep by turning off the harddisk and the light is blinking. But when I go to pick it up or even move it the Superdrive makes a noise as if its searching for a disk and the apple on the lid/monitor blinks on and off. Basically the computer never really stays in sleep mode.

About 40 minutes late I pull it out of the case and it is WAY hot and the fan is going like crazy. I open it up and I cant do anything, I think because it is over heated. What is the deal?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was using my Macbook Pro, finished, put it to sleep and left for a few hours. When I came back it was off. I try to turn it on and the power light comes on and I can hear the disk for about 3 second and then it just shuts off again. I searched the apple support site for this problem and I've done these things. [URL]. I play computer games on it and often the battery would drain. I would plug it in when the 10 minute warning came up, and the little light on the MagSafe plug would turn from green to amber. Lately it had been turning back to green even though the battery icon on the screen said the battery wasn't charged, sometimes the computer would even shut down even though it was plugged in (again, it was plugged in and the light was green, even though the battery icon said it wasn't charged). Maybe it's related to my computer not turning on?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an older style MBP, 2.2, running 10.4.3, and the other day after using it about an hour I put it to sleep. After another hour or so I opened it to use it again. Usually just opening it will wake it from sleep. It didnt so I tried pressing any buttons, no luck. Held the power button til it turned off. Tried to boot up but the screen stayed black and the sleep light went on, but did not pulsate. Tried that a few times with the same result. I also tried hooking up an external monitor, just got "no signal".
View 6 Replies View RelatedTo resolve the Macbook Pro 2010 (13") not being able to sleep when the lid is open. I even dl-ed this one app called "Please Sleep" that claimed to solve the issue to no avail. My energy saver power settings have me un-check marking the box that says "turn off hard disks when possible". I have my screen saver kicking in 5 minutes, display sleep going at the 10th minute, and then finally the computer sleep itself at 20 minutes. These are under the "plugged" in condition.
Often times I will leave my lid open, go off and do whatever. Come back to find the screen turned off, and no blinking sleep light. Instead I'll press some keys and find myself on the purple background/initial USER log in screen. Upon logging in all my initial boxes, windows, apps are closed and I am forced to re-open all of them all over. Is it correct to assume that this is a widely recognized issue with the Uni-MBP?
On occasion, my MBP does not "wake up". My only alternative is to restart, Anyone else have this happen? Is there a way to wake up from sleep mode beside a restart?

Firstly do you just do this for short periods as such as overnight? Also can your carry them around whilst on sleep or should they be shut down.

Probably a dumb question, but I know nothing about laptops.Never had a laptop before (currently using a imac g5 from 2006).
I'm using my Mac on an external monitor with a USB keyboard/mouse and the lid closed. When I put it to sleep using the remote, it switches off but then re-awakens about 5 seconds later. It's really annoying as it's usually when I'm in bed after watching a video and am too tired to get up and switch it off manually. How to make it sleep? Could it be the USB peripherals making it act this way? If so, how can I stop my Mac from waking on USB?
