IMac :: Adding Desktop To MacBook Collection?
Jun 14, 2009I've been a happy MacBook owner for two years now, and would like to add a desktop to my collection...or at least the experience of one. So, should I just buy a large lcd screen, mouse and keyboard for my MacBook, or should I get an actual desktop, like a mac mini (and all the peripherals)? Are the mac minis worth buying, or should I only consider an iMac and up? I have a desktop running Vista, and I used to share its lcd with my MacBook via a switch.
I just got tired of having to move everything around on my desk to make room for the MacBook, and then plugging everything up was a chore. I'd kind of like a permanent, Mac desktop solution the more I think about it. With a mini I could use all the Vista peripherals and just change between the two via the switch...which wouldn't be too bad actually. I do audio / video editing, as well as graphic design work. I do my gaming on either my xbox 360 or my Vista desktop, so I'm not looking for a gaming rig.
OS X :: Rearranged Applications Folder - No Clusters Found
Feb 8, 2010A few days ago I rearranged my Applications folder a bit (sorted it all into 5 subfolders: Internet, Media, Text, Tools, and Utilities). I didn't realize that this would cause problems, but it did. I've had various error messages since then, but they've all been benign so far. But today, the first time I tried to use Compressor since I did the organizing, dragging clips to my Compressor droplet achieved nothing.
So I opened Batch Monitor, and where my computer was previously listed in the left pane, it says now says "No clusters found". I loaded Apple Qmaster, and my machine isn't listed as a cluster there either. So I checked in Qadministrator, and it doesn't show any clusters. I tried adding a new one named the same as my computer, but when I try to add a controller to it, the drop down menu doesn't have any options. I'd really rather not reinstall 10.6.

Nov 13, 2008I goggled for answers but can't find any. I'm looking for a way that students at the lab cannot drag and drop (copying) a quicktime movie found on Desktop. Yes, they can play/view the movie clip but I do not want them to copy it into their USB. Is there a way? Like using Terminal? I tried to look for 3rd Party software but couldn't find a good one?

Nov 13, 2008I got an HDD from a friend and its pretty faster than the one my Mac Pro has. What I want to do is, put all the system files, apps etc in that new HDD, but have my home folder on my old HDD which is bigger. How can I do that from software side? I am guessing it would cause problems to just move my home folder to another HDD.

May 25, 2010I am working in Finder list view (Snow Leopard) and want to add subfolders to another subfolder in documents. When a execute a cmd+shift+N, the folder is added to my root directory in documents. I then have to go back, find it, and drag the folder into my subfolder. It is a real pain. Does anyone have a way to add a folder into a sub-folder without having to drag it from the root?

Jun 10, 2012I work for a University and the school bought me an iMac in January. Before giving it to me they had a username and password put on it so that only I could access it. I took it home for the summer and realized that the login info would only work on the school's network. To get around this I erased the account by holding down "command +S" during startup. It solved the problem and I was able to login and use the computer however now it says iTunes cannot be located and therefore cannot be used and when I use Safari it will not save any of the settings changes like changed startup pages etc. I reinstalled Lion by pressing "command + R" during startup but still encounter the same problem. how to completely erase everything and go back to factory settings?

Feb 11, 2010I was wondering if anybody had a solution to this problem which involves placing a widget onto a particular Space on the desktop, I have tried opening the widgets folder when Spaces is activated to add it to a particular space but it does not recognize it. I would have thought that a solution to this would be available, but having searched the internet for any 3rd party app or solution I have found it very difficult to get any answers. I just want something that that allows me to work on different Spaces without having a widget appear all the time, except in an allocated space on my desktop.....

I deleted the whole library. I have a folder "Greatest hits" with about 20 subfolders for each artist. I added the folder "Greatest hits" to the iTunes library, Itunes creates a new folder for every individual artists in the root directory, copies the songs as well but the cover jpg remains in the "old" folder...

IMac :: Best Option For Home Network With Desktop?
Mar 2, 2010We have a 13" regular aluminum macbook. We have 2 apple TVs, 24,000 songs, 10 gigs of pictures and a ton of video. We just bought a nice Cannon HD video camera and my wife snaps photographs with her Nikon SLR on every whim. We use an USB HDD to store all the songs and video, which must be plugged in all the time. This laptop is extremely taxed and it is time add another mac.
1. What would be the best option?
2. Can macs talk to each other, i.e. share files, picture, etc.? Can the macs look as exactly the same and being able to access the files in the same place? I don't want to move my wife's cheese.
3. Do mice work like the trackpad? We love the trackpad.
It would be nice to have a faster mac to edit photographs and video. We have yet to upload video from our new camera because via USB it take forever.
Software :: Opening Files In The Desktop Via Open With Option?
Jun 13, 2010I want to add a file to the Desktop, and I want to open it with a specific text editor (emacs) whenever I click on it. So far, I made that file, copied it into the Desktop directory, and I tried to set the application which opens it via a right-click "Open-with" menu item. But when I try to select executable for that file (again, emacs), that application is greyed out and I can't set that application to open it.
So, how can I do it. When I click on the file, I want a window to be opened with emacs running and editing that file.

I managed to get rid of the lost+found items on the iMac, but the DROBO says "The operation can�t be completed because the item �dir_1558208� is in use." as well as the rest of the contents.

May 31, 2009I was under the impression that you could just put new songs right into this folder and they would show up in iTunes. I added a bunch of music files (correct format of course) to this folder and they don't show up. I still have to use "Add to library" and browse to the actual folder and song for it to show up. Recently, I started to collect some old footage (videos) in my Movie folder, I even added some silly covers to them like Joe's birthday - 2009 etc., The thing is that even with the ICON set to 128x128 I still think it's a bit small, so whenever in this folder I like to use the CoverFlow view and all it's glory.
Now, here comes the tricky part, is there a way to force this folder to ALWAYS open in the CoverFlow view? I just want this particular folder to do this, the rest should open normally in the default view with their 48x48 icons.
Applications :: Adding To An Existing Itunes Folder On External Hard Drive?
Jan 15, 2009Okay here's the thing: I (not so long ago) copied my entire itunes library to my external hard drive. Now I have updated my itunes library on my powerbook, and want to make sure that I back up the new songs/albums I have. The problem with this is that I have always found that when I drag the itunes folder from my powerbook to the itunes folder on my external drive, it asks to 'replace the itunes music folder'. I don't want this as there are some albums that I have stored in my folder but not on my itunes library and still want to keep them stored.
Is there any way that I could just keep adding to the 'existing' itunes folder on my external drive?
