I have a MacBook Air, 2011. I just restarted it, and one of my two folders I have on my desktop now has a different name. I did not change it and I live alone. What is going on?

I have a base 15" mbp 2010 model. I wanted to restart my laptop several times and this happened about twice now. I had to force shutdown by holding the power button, but this can't be healthy for it. Here's what happens, I go to apple>restart and then my desktop icons and taskbar, finder bar goes all away so that only my desktop background is showing, and it stays there. I can still move the cursor with my trackpad but me being new to macs, i don't know any keyboard shortcuts to bring up the activity monitor and stuff. Is something wrong with my macbook pro?

This morning, the MacBook screen also went blank white on restart. Tried to use Snow Leopard CD to restart but it was ejected and folder with ? is only thing that displays. Will not restart. Have replaced hard drive 6 months ago. I need this computer for work.

Whenever I wanted to change my desktop background, it would change immediately no problem but once I shut down or restarted my mac, it would revert back to the original background. Somewhere I read that by deleting com.apple.desktop.plist this problem could be solved. I did that and bingo it solved the problem! But since I am a newbie i would like to know is it fine to do so and what (if any) effects it could have on my mac?

Had to perform disc repair a couple of weeks ago and reinstall to defaults. At that time had spinning wheel when trying to start. Now have flashing folder icon with question mark, and cannot enter utilities or start from recovery USB.

It seems logical to me that this folder should be on Launchpad. Can/should I move this folder to Launchpad and if so, how?

I'm a rather new Mac user (it's been about 6 months since I bought my new aluminum iMac). Lately, I've been experiencing difficulties in shutting down my system, or even restarting it. I should probably note that I'm using 10.5.2 Sometimes, when I try to perform a system shutdown/restart, the OS gets to a point where only my desktop is shown but nothing happens (occasionally the beach ball keeps rolling, but not always).
At that point, (as far as I know) there's nothing I can do to restart/shutdown the system, besides pressing the "power" button for several seconds until the power goes down. When similar things happened on my old XP machine, I would just use CTRL ALT DEL and force quit all applications - until shutdown succeeds. There was never a scenario where I needed to cut the power in order to get the system to shut down. On OS X when this situation occurs, the CMD ALT ESC combo doesn't seem to work.
i have g5 with fresh leopard install . after restart my icons on desktop realigned to the right,not in my customized pattern. that happened from the first restart after the installation.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 24inch aluminum iMac running the latest versions of Snow leopard. It's a little over 2 years old. I can turn my computer on and all is fine, I can keep it running for hours on end and nothing is a problem. However, the moment I turn it off or perform a restart I get the flashing folder icon? It takes about 2 hours before I can boot the computer up again.
I've tried the following:Resetting PRAM and VRAM
Resetting the start up disk information through system preferences
Pulling an individual RAM module, booting up then trying the same with other RAM module (to check to see whether I have some dodgy RAM)
At first I thought it must be the hard drive, but why can I run my computer with no problems at all. I had it running for 2 days, and not a problem! But, the minute I turn it off, that's it, you can forget booting it up for at least another hour.

In the Desktop & Screen Saver pane of System Preferences, I wanted to add a new folder for use as my desktop background images. However, when I click on the + icon to add the new folder, it does not appear in the source list and instead, it duplicates my Aperture library source, as seen in attachment 1. If I try to add the new folder again, it says it is already present in the source list, as seen in attachment 2.
I've tried deleting my com.apple.desktop.plist preference file, and that resets things, but when I go to add the folder, it does the same thing. I've tried different folder locations, different folder names -- nothing works.
there are several folders on my desktop, when I click open a "Mgmt 339" folder, it appears an entire desktop instead of open just "Mgmt 339" folder.

By the time we came out, we saw 2 new folders in our Macbook: "dwhelper" (14.23GB) and "Library" (3.87GB in size). Please refer to attached jpg file. We also noticed that all of the settings I had in the Mac has disappeared, for instance all my iTunes setups (musics, iphone apps etc) and Firefox bookmarks have disappeared.
