MacBook Pro :: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 - GPU?
Jan 9, 2010
ATI just formally announced it's mobility 5000 series. Among them is the 5870 - too hot - the 5650 - too cold - and the 5830; coming in at 24 watts. Juuuust right. There's also the 5700 cards which offer similar TDP but with slightly poorer performance. Whilst they are probably highly likely as GPUs for the next MBPs, the 5830 seems to offer the best bang for buck per watt. Quote:

Here's a comparison of an upconverted dvd on a 7 inch screen, versus a blu ray on a 7 inch screen. The 15" HP Envy laptop, which is basically identical to the Macbook Pro in terms of dimensions, design and power consumption, opts to use the i5 processor, 1920x1080 resolution and a blu ray drive alongside a 1GB ATI 5830 GPU in the high end models. So the next MBP using a weaker GPU than basically a MBP knock off already offers would make the MBP seem poorly planned out and poorly designed.

I'm curious to see where my new MB's video card ranks in comparison with my iMac Core Duo's (with 256mb vRAM). The iMac has the ATI Radeon X1600, and the MacBook has the new NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. I know this is an odd question, but does anyone have any idea how these two compare?

I had the the 27" iMac with the ATI and I just recently ordered the 15" i7 MBP with the 330M (512MB). Knowing mostly nothing about graphics cards or computer gaming, but wanting to get a few games for my MBP, I'd like to know how the 330M compares to the Radeon HD 4670. I intend to get Orange Box for Mac when Steam's out and the Mac version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. My only experience gaming on the iMac was a Bioshock demo that ran modestly on mostly medium settings. So in comparing the two graphics cards, I'd like to get a sense of what to expect.

I got an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro All-in-wonder in a box of computer junk. Actually, besides a stick of PC3-6400 memory, it was the only thing that wasn't just an empty box or instruction manual

I've seen a lot of HD 6970 reviews hit the streets today. Can we hope to see some "investigation" from Cindori & company in the near future???
I would love to stick a modded version in my 2008 Mac Pro.
Retail on these cards is looking at about $370.00 (Yeah... 80 bucks cheaper than Apple wants for their single-DVI 5870 )
Requires 1 8-pin and 1 6-pin power connector.2 GB of memory on-board.

I have a few question for people who have upgraded to the ATI 5770 form the 8800GT.
It looks looks the install is pretty straight forward. But what type of performance upgrade can I expect? I use manly Photoshop, Lightroom and X-plane. Are there any hidden got-you's?

I have a 2010 Mac Pro currently using the 5870 graphics card to run a 22 monitor. However, I am going to add a second 27 screen to my setup. I do a lot of heavy 3d modelling so GPU power is very important. I spend hours and hours panning and zooming in dense models so I would like to dedicate the 5870 power to this, rather than it running dual monitors.
I have read that you could use a GT 120 to drive extra monitors but Ive also heard really bad reviews for its performance, making it really painful to spend an extra 120 on it. The 5770 is 80 more and has a lot more power than a GT 120.
Is it viable to use PCI Express Y-splitters to run a 5770 and 5870 together? If so how would it work? What are the dangers in doing this?
I have done some research and apparently you can use PCI Express Y-splitters to run two high-end cards on the Mac Pro, though, I couldnt find a lot of info on the subject. Im not really computer literate but Im willing to do some moderate internal tinkering in order to run two decent cards (which is really surprising for a Professional computer).

I'm searching for upgrade video cards for my dual 533Mhz digital audio G4 PM. I've noticed that there are several sellers on eBay selling ATI Radeon 9600's and claim they work on PM G5's as well as PM G4's. [URL]. Could these cards just be stock Apple cards pulled from a G5 that happen to work in a G4, or are they altered or flashed PC cards that work on G5's and G4's. Is it common knowledge that you can pull a 9600 out of a stock G5 and use it in a G4?

has anyone installed 2 of the ATI Radeon 3870 (mac edition) cards and get crossfire mode to work successfully in XP under bootcamp? I've been trying to for a few days now with no luck!
The drivers for bootcamp on ATI's site won't install on my machine for some reason and when I use the normal xp drivers (successfully) I can't get the crossfire option to show up in catalyst control center.
Also, in the catalyst control center, it only shows the primary card as enabled and says my other is disabled. However, they are both enabled and working just fine according to the device manager.
Cards are installed in 1st and 2nd slot.

I got an MP09 with Apple HD 4870 512MB graphics card some time ago and while I enjoy working with Mac OS, I also enjoy playing games. At the Mac OS side I dont really play games or do much heavy 3D stuff but on the Windows side then I play. I noticed that the graphics card kinda gets hot, not in amounts to worry but still. Catalyst Control Center states the following: 79C while at 70% load with fan at 20% windows 7 x64, Catalyst 9.12 I would like to tune the fan to 33%. Is there a way to do this? I enabled Overdrive and checked manual fan speed, which doesnt work (known bug). Then I edited an profile and loaded it, still not at 33% fan speed. I also tried Speedfan to tune the PCI fan of the MP but it doesnt show me the fans of the MP.

I'm upgrading my 2008 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5770. I intend to connect it to two 23" LED monitors with DVI interfaces. Can I use one of the DVI ports on the HD 5770 and one of the Mini DisplayPorts with a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter or am I better off using both MiniDisplay Ports?

Can someone explain to me what the differences between these two graphics cards are? My main use will be with a 6-core Mac Pro and a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I'd like to watch Netflix/Huly Plus full screen. I will not be doing any video editing. I will be doing some audio editing and the basic Apple iLife applications.
What are the pros/cons of the 5770 vs the 5870? I know the 5870 uses more power and I've also heard it's louder.

I borrowed a used 2006 Mac Pro from [URL[. I installed the Radeon HD 5870 from our Westmere 6-core along with its boot drive. It booted up the first time no problemo. I tried the Mini DisplayPorts with and without the MDP to DVI adapter. Works fine. Right now I'm running game benchmarks on a 24" LED Cinema display plugged directly into the MDP. OWC techies have the 5770 running in their 2006 Mac Pro but could not get the 5870 to boot -- black screen. They are investigating what's different about their 2006 from the one I'm using.

I've been considering buying one of the new Radeon video card kits and throwing it in my 2006 Mac Pro. I would prefer the 5870 but for the most part, the opinion online is that it wouldn't work. However, I came across this link: [URL:...] So what gives? How did barefeats pull it off? Could it have been using the boot drive really played such a role? I kept reading it couldn't be done due to the lack of EFI64.

I have a 64MB ATI graphics card and can't get the screen resolution I want. It was fine and I had it set to how I like, until I plugged in an S-video cable to my T.V then all the settings changed and now I can't get back to the resolution I had before. I unplugged the cable and tried to change them but still no luck. When I select the desired resolution it makes the screen tiny in the middle of the monitor. The resolution is fine on the T.V. I have a real pet hate of low screen resolutions which is all I can use at the moment. I bought the card on ebay but think it is a PC "flashed" to MAC as the factory drivers CD is PC and MAC drivers are on a cd-r. Is there any way I can clear the memory of the card or the files that the card uses so I can "restore" it to how it was before I connected the s-video. It also asked me in the ATI app (the first time I opened it with the T.V connected) if I wanted to have the connection to the T.V as always on. I removed the app and reinstalled but it seems to have remembered the settings and doesn't ask this again. Is there any way to change it back so it doesn't remember?

I have bought a Radeon 4850 graphics card to play some games in Windows under boot camp. The card comes with a mini 6 pin power connector that connects to the graphics card and supplied lead has at the other end a 4 pin power connector to go into the computer's power supply by the looks of the diagram in the box. My question is do I need to connect this to the Mac Pro power supply? The ATI 2600 card in the machine doesn't look like it connects to another power supply.
If I do need to use this then I can only see two small power connectors on the motherboard near the fan, does anyone know anywhere in the UK that would sell a compatible power lead?

I just received my new Mac Pro on Friday - it shipped with 10.5.4 installed. After looking at some of the new features of Leopard (had only used Tiger previously), I installed all the available updates -- these were:
Mac OS X Update 10.5.5
Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0
Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 2
iTunes 8.0
Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.2
QuickTime 7.5.5
Remote Desktop Client Update 3.2.2
Front Row Update
All the updates were successful and no issues were apparent until Sunday afternoon. The fan on the graphics card (ATI Radeon 2600 XT) now seems to be running at full speed, regardless of what is running. Just idling at the Desktop the fan still runs at full speed. A reset of the SMC has been done and a diagnostic as been run (no problems found). Is anybody else experiencing this? If it helps anyone, I've also posted my temps below:
Ambient Air 24.0C
CPU A Temperature Diode 34.0C
CPU B Temperature Diode 35.0C
CPU C Temperature Diode 35.0C

Memory Bank A Point 2 33.0C
Memory Bank A Point 3 34.0C
Memory Bank B Point 1 35.0C
Memory Bank B Point 2 37.0C
Memory Bank B Point 3 35.0C
Memory Module A1 48.0C
Memory Module B1 48.0C
Northbridge Heat Sink 38.0C
Expansion Slots 35.0C
Power Supply Location 1 46.0C
Power Supply Location 2 40.0C
Also, I did some reading and it seems that this issue has happened to others after they appllied the 2600 XT update from Apple. The update put their firmware at version .252. This is the version that is already installed on my card.
What I don't understand is that why for two days the fan never ran at full speed. It just suddenly started happening Sunday afternoon while I was burning some data to a DVD - the fan hasn't slowed down since.

I installed the OEM Radeon HD 4870 in a First Generation "Clovertown" 3.0GHz 8-core Mac Pro. It's working. This is the model I mean (see right column). [URL]. I pulled the card from a Nehalem.) I booted from the drive that came with the Nehalem. (Easier than cloning the system or trying to get the drivers to copy over - which gave an error on boot.) It runs with no problems. I'm busily running 3D Game benchmarks which I will report back on later tonight or tomorrow morning.
