I am waiting on delivery of a Vertex drive for my Macbook Pro. While waiting on delivery I have been following some posts on OCZ's support forums

Now I am curious. Does this product have major issues in the Macbook, or do the problems described in the OCZ forum represent a small percentage of Mac users? Let's see what the numbers are for users in this forum.

MacBook Pro :: Poll/Who Has Had Success With HD Replacement In UMBP (2009)?

Jan 11, 2010

I am in the process of researching HD replacements for my 250Gb in my 13" uMBP as I would like to have more room for stuff. After searching threads here about replacements, it seems some people are having stalling and beachball issues with their replacement HDs in their uMBPs.

So here is my poll:

1. Have you replaced the HD in a uMBP (with motion sensor) with no ill effects?
2. If so, what brand and size HD? and....
3. What model uMBP

MacBook Pro :: 13" Hinge Clicking Noise - Poll

Jun 22, 2010

I see that a few people have an issue with the unibody 13" MBP making a "clicking" noise when the lid is opened. The issue varies from a mild click to a loud click. Usually, once the click occurs, it does not repeat itself until after sometime. This poll is to help determine whether or not it's worth it to get this issue fixed by Apple, specifically if the clicking is not bothersome (read: not too loud).

OS X :: Fit To Screen Button Poll For Mac / Windows Users

Dec 11, 2008

C'mon Apple... I know you don't like copying Microsoft and I don't either... but you gotta lose the green + toggle for windows and add a fit to screen button. This is no longer funny. Your only excuse is if there is a copyright, TM or patent issue, but somehow I think it's pure stubborness and you think the green toggle is useful. For those of you who have never owned or used a PC, this poll is not for you. For people who have used both, how many of you would like to see a "Fit To Screen" toggle button instead of a green + for OS windows?

Mac Pro :: Why Overclocking A Big Deal On PC Side?

Jan 22, 2010

It seems that everytime I visit a tech site like anandtech and stumble on CPU articles or discussions, they talk about overclocking. On the latest i3 CPU, the author overclocked the 2.93GHz to a stable 4GHz wihtout even needing additional cooling. Why is overclocking such a big deal on the PC side, but not on the Mac side even though we're using the same family of chips?

I haven't been able to sync anything for a while because of that problem and I do not know what to do.

Does any one know how to deal with it?

Mac Pro :: Mac Pro Quad 2.0GHz A Good Deal? (Or New Mini?)

Apr 17, 2009

Hi guys

I have been looking at the new mac minis (self upgrading the HDD and RAM), but for not too much more it looks like I could get a 12-18 month old mac pro.
Is it worth getting the older machine with better specs or will the new mini actually be more capable?

I will use it for photography (lightroom, PSE6, iphoto) word processing (MS Office 08) and obviously email/safari.
I have done quite a bit of searching around but can't seem to find much info on this topic, plenty about G5 powermacs vs mini but nothing on the dual xeon dual core 2.0ghz pros.

Any info/advice much appreciated
Thanks

Applications :: Best Way To Deal With Large Photo Library?

Oct 6, 2009

I have an iPhoto library with 15.000 photo's and videos and I cannot stand the way iPhoto organizes all of them.

To get my photo's organized in a decent fashion I came up with the following ideas:

1. Switch to Aperture. (But Aperture does not accept videos, so that won't work for me.)

2. Use albums in iPhoto. (But the events are still under events, albums just create a shortcut.)

3. Switch to Picasa, but it seems like it is hard to get all the metadata (keywords, geotags, etc) correctly exported out of iPhoto.

None of these seem to work for me. How do you guys deal with your large photo libraries?

OS X :: How Macs/iPads/iPhones Deal With Videos

May 30, 2010

I've just done a video on my Canon stills camera and it imported into iPhoto. But the video doesn't then appear to sync with my iPad. So I found the file in Finder and dragged it into iTunes. Problem there is that it isn't really a Movie or a TV show - I don't want a short clip of my cat in amongst feature films.

So how do you arrange/sync personal videos?

Mac Mini :: Music Production - Deal With Heat Under Stress?

Sep 11, 2010

I'm eyeing the mini right now because os x >>> windows for music (inherent midi drivers instead of 3rd party, stability, etc etc).amittedly I currently run a hackintosh on a previously windows pc. It is stable with the exception of gfx crashes every few hours and its inability to use the gfx card to its full extent. This gets to me though and is kind of a bitch. So I'm thinking about getting a mini when I have the money for one. I would get the standard with the 4gb ram option. How well does it deal with heat under stress? and is the HDD 7200 rpm for the non server edition?(edit: roarrrr just read that its 5400, so lame)

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Do Latest Software Updates Really Deal With Flashback

May 9, 2012

I went through some fairly difficult procedures to rid my computer of Flashback and quickly got in over my head. So I called tech support, and they told me, if I have OS X 10.7 and do software updates regularly, that I have nothing to worry about. They said Safari is not compromised, and there's no reason not to enable Java. They said software updates is more important than any third party anti-virus or anti-malware software that I could run. I would like to know what some of you in the forum think about these issues.

MacBook :: Moving A Logic Board From 2008 Black Macbook To 2010 White Macbook

Jun 28, 2010

So last December my laptop got smashed and everything works except for the backlit screen. In fact I can still use this laptop it is just extremely hard since the screen does not light up. The person that smashed it ended up buying me a new laptop so I have this beat up (and I mean the shell is destroyed) laptop with quite a lot of functioning parts.

Now a few weeks ago my girlfriends Grandad spilled a beer on his brand new 2010 Macbook. The logic board is shot so it is almost cheaper for him to buy a brand new laptop.

Would it be possible for me to take the logic board out of my 2008 Black Macbook and put it into his 2010 White Macbook?

MacBook Air :: Macbook Airs (11 And 13) Both Smoking The 13" 2.4Ghz Macbook Pro In Gaming Benchmarks

Oct 27, 2010

By far the most interesting benchmark trend coming out of the latest Macbook Air tests is that of the 320M GPU - is this thing somehow clocked differently than in the Macbook/Macbook Pro?

From:

[URL]

The latest Macbook Pro 13" 2.4 Ghz gets 33 FPS in Call of Duty 4, whereas the Macbook Air 13" (using the same 320M GPU) gets 40 FPS. Even the 1.4Ghz 11" gets 37! So obviously we're not talking about a CPU limited game - the only explanation then is that the GPU in the Macbook Air is clocked differently than in the 13" Macbook Pro, no?

From:

[URL]

Again the Macbook Air clocked at 2.13 ghz is beating the 2.4 Ghz Macbook Pro in World of Warcraft and Portal! And in WOW the 11" 1.4ghz still manages to beat the 2.4 Ghz 13" Macbook Pro.

Anyone have any additional insight into this? Anand did a terrible job of testing these for gaming performance, unfortunately, so he may not have even noticed this trend.

MacBook Air :: MacBook Air A Viable Replacement For 2008 White Plastic MacBook?

I have a 2008 13" white, plastic MacBook. Its a bit slow, but adequate. Thinking of selling it and paying the difference to get the 11" MacBook Air. I've heard it is similar in speed and has the same processor.
The main problem I have with my current MacBook is that its heavy - I need something lightweight to easily carry to school and class for note-taking and such.

How is the Air better or worse, and would I be losing anything significantly by replacing the 08 plastic MB with a MBA?

Has anyone tried their Air adapter on a MacBook? Could an Air owner tell me the voltage and current rating (outputs) on their adapter?

Hardware :: Macbook Vs Mini For Desktop / Macbook Power Usage / Operation Closed

Apr 15, 2009

I'm putting a computer in my kitchen that anybody in the house can use (kids & parents). It will be hooked up to a 24" LCD and also act as a small file server, dvd player and perhaps eyetv dvr.

I like the mini because it is small (can hide in the cabinet where spills won't get it), is cheap and uses only 13W when idle. But when I think down the road, 4 year old laptops seem a lot more useful than 4 year old mac minis. So I'm a bit torn.

So my questions are:

- Does anybody know how much power the macbook uses when "idle" (just running finder).

- Can the macbook be run with the lid closed? (I know old powerbooks used to vent hot air through the keyboard.)

(Then again, I have the computer in the kitchen so I can watch my kids on the computer. In 4 years they'll be 5 years old and probably want a laptop they could have in their own room - exactly what I want to avoid. And I'll probably upgrade my macbook pro by then anyway.)

MacBook :: Battery Life On Late 2009 White MacBook & Screen Shadow ?

Oct 31, 2010

I have a late 2009, white unibody MacBook which is 7 months old, and I have been noticing that the battery life is getting less and less, and am rather confused.I reset the SMC as per Apple instructions, and then followed the battery calibrating guide to the letter from apple.com, and tonight it seems to have lasted... 3.5 hrs! Hardly the quoted 7 hours that Apple spec, and I am simply doing light web browsing, nothing else.Am I doing something wrong? The machine sits connected to magsafe 90% of the time, but I cannot envisage that would cause any problem, as it knows when it is charged, so afaik no more current can get to the battery to damage it
