MacBook :: OS Shutsdown Randomly - Calendar Time Change Alert
Aug 17, 2010
I have a 2008 macbook, out of warranty. My mac is running os x 10.6.4... I recently updated the laptop through the update section, and this is around the time the errors began. My next stop is perhaps reinstalling the operating system, but have to go out and buy the disc so thought i would check all options first.
It has begun random shutdowns recently, and i have tried checking the ram, checking power supply, removing battery to see if its caused by that, but so far nothing has come up. A mate of mine said sometimes you can work out the problem by looking at the logs to see what is causing the problem... Well, long story cut short,
the log is as follows from when i turned it on this afternoon, till the random shutdown, and then powering it back up again, i put the exact shutdown time in bold.

I just received my 3rd replacement mac pro, the second one (same spec, apple replaced it for me) is here too. I'm trying to get the 'new' one up and running. They are both identical spec - stock Octo 2.8, with 8800GT, 500GB HD, and Airport.
Anyway, I bought a 750gb Samsung F1 on the 'old' mac pro and installed my OS and all my audio software and plugins on there. The 500GB drive holds only the audio data (no OS). Is it OK to just remove one boot drive from the 'old' mac pro, and put it in the new one? The are both the same spec machines...
The reason i ask is because i am getting very scary and random SHUTDOWNS on the new mac pro, all of a sudden - it will turn off, then briefly (for half a second) the fans will spin again, then it will die. It is as if something is tripping the power off, or messing with it at least. It's done it several times now. The first time i was doing a time machine backup, came back to the computer an hour later, and it was off completely. It wouldn't start for a while, then all of a sudden, it did on its own, a couple of seconds after i tried pressing the switch.
I tried to run the apple diagnostic test, and shut down after a minute or so. So i took out the stock 500GB hard drive (only the 750GB left in it now) and i'm running it again. We'll see what the results are. But anyway, has anyone done this? It should be ok to take the drive out and put it back in, right?
I have a problem... I use very processor heavy programs on my iMac G5 and up until about a year ago, I was getting along ok. Here's the gist of it:
1) World of Warcraft/ProTools etc. Prolonged use over many hours eventually caused my imac's fan noise to be unbearable. Even worse, my imac began randomly shutting down almost predictably during high processor use.
2) Was taken to an apple store (while in warranty) and only thing said was that it needed a new logic board. No explanation what actually happened to it. Logic board replaced. Few months later, it's happening again.
3) I am now outside an apple warranty and it will cost me $400+ to get it repaired. It is functional for regular internet use, but on sites like youtube, after a few videos it will likely shut down.
I have opened up my computer several times to inspect the capacitors, but they all look like new. I realize overuse is probably the problem, but if there is a fix I can do myself, I'd at least like to try. The problem is that I have no idea what to do I hate hearing "needs a new logic board" instead of "this part ____ needs to be replaced/fixed"
Specs: iMac G5 17" 2.0ghz generation right before isight macs.
An alert box with a yellow triangle keeps randomly popping up on my screen. But I don't have time to read what it says because it disappears in 1 sec. What is it? What can I do to get rid of it?

Installed Mavericks yesterday over Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and have had a host of problems that have paralysed my computer use. The most irritating problem has been that I use the glass chime for my calendar alert. Well, it won't stop ringing--it's like a button's depressed and stuck in that position. It renders the audio unusable now, which means no VOIP calling or audio of any kind as I'm forced to keep it on mute. My mouse is fluttering all over the place.
I have used iCal and now Calendar for many years. For every event, I choose to show "Message with Sound" for the alert. In the past few weeks, I noticed I no longer get any on-screen pop-up message. Not sure of the proper term for that, but my choice for each event is the same: "Message with Sound", so maybe it is called "message". I do get the sound alert, just am now missing the tiny even message window that used to pop up.
Here is an odd chain of events...
I looked in ~/Preferences to try trashing something, found only "com.apple.CalendarAgent.plist" as an obvious choice. I expected to find com.apple.Calendar.plist, but no such file. When I launched Calendar, it showed no change at all in any of my preference settings, and I do have several settings that are not default, such as "Start week on Monday" and "Alerts > Event: At time of event" instead of 15 minutes before.
After re-launching Calendar, I noticed a new file, "com.apple.Calendar.plist" appeared in ~/Preferences. I always use column view, so it isn't possible that i missed it before; this file was not there before. Nonetheless, the alert sounds with no message window issue continues. How to restore the alert window?
I'm facing an issue with safari. Every time I try to start the app safari - alert window pops up, and I cannot really close it because when I do, it shows again and again.
Quick time alert keeps stating invalid URL. I am trying to listen to Moose country radio. Have been for weeks but last two days nothing except this error message.
Apparently I allowed iCloud to delete all of my calendar and reminder information from my Mac.Can I restore it from iCloud, if not can I restore it from Time Machine?
I'm currently using a macbook pro 17" 10.5.8 / Unlike windows os, it alerts you in many occasion, for example: low battery, usb device inserted, etc. and you can change the alert sound for everyting in the control panel, sound, option.
so basically, how do I do the same thing on mac? do i need to install additional software? if yes.. any suggestion?
I am a brand new Mac user. Just purchased a MacBook Air with Entourage. I am wanting to change the font size in that calendar program. The fonts that are used are just way too small. Any ideas on how to accomplish this
I am trying to use iCloud calendar services for collaboration with my wife, and my secretary (I actually even bought a mac for my wife so that we could do this). However every time either of them change anything in their respective calendars I get an e-mail from iCloud saying an event has been created. This only started about a week ago. I have checked to see if some of my settings in iCloud have changed, and they haven't (the box in iCloud that says: "E-mail me when this calendar changes" is not ticked). Why I am suddenly getting all these e-mails which are quite irritating.

Have had my imac for about a year and just recently my hard drive changed from "c:" to "+++++". I changed it to read "hard drive" and then a few days later it changed again to "5+". Why is it doing this?
I need to change my backup volume for Time Machine. But I don't see [Preferences] or [Change Disk] when I click on Time Machine from the System Preferences.
My mid-2014 15" Macbook Pro randomly "loses" its retina display at the top menu (becomes pixel-y), where the battery, sound, and wifi logos are (on the top right side of the screen). A restart fixes the issue, but I want to know if this is an issue that can be fixed?
When I enter an event in calendar, I name it and put the time right after the name. It then enters the time in the detail box that can be opened up regarding the event. What I want to do, however, is show the time in the calendar, right after the name, without opening up the detail box. If I open up the detail box and edit the name by adding the time, it will stay there. Is there a way for me to avoid this extra step and have the time show up right after the event name when I create the event?
I've had a little bit of an accident; when trying to correct a problem with syncing with my BlackBerry via Missing Sync I reset sync services per a support article. This managed to blank my iCal calendar. No problem thinks I, as I backed up iCal beforehand with "Back up iCal". Problem is that when I restore it's still blank apart from all-day appointments. No problem thinks I, I have Time Machine! So, after a bit of searching on MacRumors I find that a restore of Library/Calendars should do the trick. Trouble is that it's still blank in iCal. When I open ical I get an "Upgrading iCal calendar" message. Weird. Again, no problem thinks I, I primarily use Entourage and sync this to iCal. So, I decide to restore Entourage data. This doesn't work and calendar is again blank. To boot, it gives me a 16008 error message whatever that is. No problem thinks I, the MacRumors folk with all their knowledge will have a suggestion.
So I start to write a post here. As I was writing the above I think I'll try Entourage one more time. I open Entourage and it all seems to be back to normal! Now, I really don't understand all of this, particularly why the iCal restore from a backup file didn't work. I was fretting I would have to ask IT to restore my mailbox from a tape backup (my calendar is on Exchange server at the office). I think before I turn on iCal-Entourage syncing again I'll take a backup from Outlook in the office. Just switched to inbox and back to calendar in Entourage and it's all blank again! The (now) blank Exchange cal must be overwriting it. So, any ideas how to successfully restore iCal from Time Machine? It seems events before today are back in iCal (and all-day events after today are there).
Is there a way to print/save as a PDF a calendar without the times showing up with the events? I really don't want to make them "All day" events b/c I don't want the highlight showing up, either!
I set up Time Machine the yesterday, it completed it's initial backup fine, and performed about 10 or so hourly backups, then randomly on one of it's hourly backups it got stuck. It never actually started the backup. The preferences said it was backing up, but the progress bar wasn't moving, and there was no activity on the drive. I stopped the "backup", and from then on I could not get it to do another backup.
So last night I reformatted the external and decided to let TM start over. Once again it finished the initial backup fine, and I went to bed. While I was in bed it finished 3 more hourly backups, and I woke up this morning to find it stuck again, trying to do it's 2:05AM backup. The computer was awake all night, so it should have no problems. The preferences say it is backing up, but never makes any progress, and there is no drive activity.
Here is the relavent errors from my System log:

I bolded the entries that I assume are the problem, but I don't know what it could be. Why does it randomly get stuck on hourly backups. BTW The "waiting" is just repeating over and over etc. Tried it a 3rd time, and this time it managed to do 25 hourly backups before getting stuck. does anyone have a clue here, I'd like to get this working. Every time it stops working I have to format the drive and start over to get it to backup again.
I've activated icloud and its caused problems with my calenders. if i stop it will i loose all my calender events. Its duplicated and removed some for my mobile devices.
So, after getting it hooked up and connected to my router, which is set to only allow only 4 devices to have access to it (my comp, iphone, wii, and gf's laptop), i find that my gf's laptop (which is the only device using a corded connection) is the only machine able to get online without problems now.
I can pick up my WiFi network occasionally after a restart, but then it usually goes out after a random amount of time... anywhere between 10 minutes to an hour or 2.
Ever since receiving my iMac back from the genius bar my external hard used by time machine randomly ejects. Apple Care had no answers for me. They told me I would have to research it then I would be able to fix it?
Running latest Mavericks on my late 2007 iMac. Recently had to do a Time Machine recovery and since my machine randomly restarts by itself when left unattended. While monitoring Console the following message keeps repeating and suspect it is the root of the problem.....
