OS X Mavericks :: IMac Keeps Randomly Restarting After Time Machine Recovery
Jun 26, 2014
Running latest Mavericks on my late 2007 iMac. Recently had to do a Time Machine recovery and since my machine randomly restarts by itself when left unattended. While monitoring Console the following message keeps repeating and suspect it is the root of the problem.....
6/26/14 5:04:46.570 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[225]: (com.hp.help.tocgenerator) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
6/26/14 5:04:47.607 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[225]: (com.hp.help.tocgenerator) Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 secondsÂ
What this means and what would be causing ?

I have an extremely slow Time Machine backup. I've gone through the motions and tried to resolve the issue by doing the suggested restart in Safe Mode.I don't use Norton Symantec but I didn't the Norton Remove script through the Console already. I don't run any anti-virus software. This started when I was backing up to at Time Capsule. I backed up to the TC for years before this started. I then moved to backing up (started fresh) to a external HD connected via USB. I have a 2010 Mac Mini with OS X 10.9 (Latest Version)

I have a mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and a new 2 TB Time Capsule. I'm trying to install a new internal SSD to replace the four-year old one it came with. I swapped the new SSD in with no trouble, and booted my computer into Internet Recovery. I selected the option to rebuild my machine based on a Time Machine backup, and it churns away for a while until it hits about 85% installed, and then it reboots (and fails to startup properly, giing me a spinner on the gray apple screen).Â
The new SSD is twice the size of the old one. I've put it in an external enclosure and mounted it, ran disk utility on it to make sure that it's working properly. I can't think what else to do, and I can't imagine why it fails at the same point in the rebuild every time!Â

I had to do a "recovery" from Time Machine backup and since Safari will quit unexpectedly every time and I have to use Firefox.
The must do "recovery" came about because the system was hanging with the gearbox spinning and never starting up the system.
My system is: Mac Pro early 2008 running on OS X 10.9.4. Before the permanent hangs system as running very, very slow.

I currently have a first generation 24" iMac. I've had it for a little over 3 years now. I have an external hard drive connected and time machine backing things up.
When my beloved iMac dies, and I get a new one, how hard will it be to recover my stuff? I'm mainly concerned about iPhoto and iTunes.

I recently had to reformat my iMac because it was restarting constantly and it kept freezing too. After a reformat, I installed a few programs. Skype, Microsoft Office 2010, VLC, Plex Home Theatre, Plex Media Server, an uTorrent.Â
My computer restarted randomly again, twice :-( I included the crash report below if it is useful.Â

The restart always occurs when I am browsing and interacting with ebay on any browser (tested on FireFox, Safari, and Chrome with a restart occurring in all 3) The screen slowly gets covered by a light grey over layer and displays a message telling me that there has been a problem and that I need to hold down the power button to restart my macbook. this has been happening to me for the past 3 weeks and I can't stand it anymore.
Any suggestion on how I might be able to find a solution to the issue? Also, has this happened to anyone else out there? I am running Snow Leopard 10.6 on a 2009 macbook.

I had to recover my primary Macinstoh HD to a new disk from Time Machine, but somehow I now lost my Recover HD on the Macintosh HD. To do the initial recover I had to install Mac OS X Lion on a 2nd internal Hard Drive, but now I want to use Time Machine and go back to before I installed Lion, because the permissions are messed up and I can no longer use that disk 2nd disk, unless I continually enter the admin password. Now when I hold down Apple - R key during boot I no longer get to Recovery HD. I was able to see Recovery HD using the System Information app, then within the Serial-ATA section, but that Apple_Boot volume is gone.Â

In the last week or so, my computer has been randomly acting up:It has restarted over a dozen times when I pressed the "esc" button to exit from full-screen viewing while I watch video. It has gone to the sign in [initial purpley wave] screen when I was in the middle of simply typing a document. It has rebooted on it's own when I tried to use any application I use regularly- such as Photobooth, etc.And just now, I had to manually press the on-off button to get the computer started because my mouse was frozen. Sounds like there is a ghost in the ol' machine.

I'm interested in the site Carbonite to back up my Mac, but I want to use Time Machine and have complete backups of my system. I'm assuming I can't use Time Machine on that site, so what's important is whether or not I can conduct a complete backup of my system on Carbonite that would allow me to completely recover my system in the event of a failure or a new computer...something like that.
Am I better off just buying an external HDD and using Time Machine?

Just receovered from a disk crash. TM brings everything back on my new HD. The problem is that when I try to backup again, I get an error message saying to check TM's preferences. One problem may be that it seems that TM wants to back up the full HD rather than doing an incremental one.

I restored from a Time Machine backup and then setup boot camp (and removed that partition a while back) and now I don't have a recovery partition. (Can't enable File Vault and
bash-3.2# diskutil list /Volumes/Macintosh HD
/dev/disk0
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *120.0 GB disk0
1: EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 87.4 GB disk0s2)
My new MacBook Pro didn't come with any CDs. Apparently I need the recovery partition to reinstall Lion from the internet. "Recovery HD offers on-disk recovery tools, allows you to restore from Time Machine backups, reinstall OS X Lion over the Internet..." The recommended solution from Apple seems to be reinstall with your OSX 10.6 CD (which I don't have) and then upgrade to Lion (which seems like a PITA). Info from : [URL]
What process should I follow to restore my recovery partition and apply the current state of the machine from a backup? (The process should not involve anything I don't have, like USB memory sticks, Lion CDs, etc....) Supplementary questions which are only relevant if the answer is "you can't" (which would seem to be a major bug!) Or is there a clever method to install a recovery partition onto an existing disk (which clearly has space for it)?
I have searched for it but all the results I found have either not mentioned that it works without reinstalling but look like it's needed, or do say "reinstall". If I install Lion to an external disk, can I boot from that and use the recovery disk assistant tool to restore the partition to my internal disk? (Which I assume I'll need to do to get FileVault to work)?

I set up Time Machine the yesterday, it completed it's initial backup fine, and performed about 10 or so hourly backups, then randomly on one of it's hourly backups it got stuck. It never actually started the backup. The preferences said it was backing up, but the progress bar wasn't moving, and there was no activity on the drive. I stopped the "backup", and from then on I could not get it to do another backup.
So last night I reformatted the external and decided to let TM start over. Once again it finished the initial backup fine, and I went to bed. While I was in bed it finished 3 more hourly backups, and I woke up this morning to find it stuck again, trying to do it's 2:05AM backup. The computer was awake all night, so it should have no problems. The preferences say it is backing up, but never makes any progress, and there is no drive activity.
Here is the relavent errors from my System log:

Nov 1 02:10:46 todd-sullivans-imac /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[304]: MDBackupBegin() returned result (906) > 0, waiting
I bolded the entries that I assume are the problem, but I don't know what it could be. Why does it randomly get stuck on hourly backups. BTW The "waiting" is just repeating over and over etc. Tried it a 3rd time, and this time it managed to do 25 hourly backups before getting stuck. does anyone have a clue here, I'd like to get this working. Every time it stops working I have to format the drive and start over to get it to backup again.

I have been using a 1 TB Iomega portable HD as my external HD for Time Machine backups of my early 2011 17" MacBook Pro with a 750GB Internal HD with only 190GB utilized. I just got a Time Machine message:Â
1) that backup couldn't be performed because of HD problem, and
2) to repair the HD with Disk Utility.
I ran DU Repair Disk and got the following Red Type messages interspersed between normal lines of DU activity reports:
"Invalid Sibling link"The volume Iomega_HDD could not be repaired."Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."Â Â
Can I recover the original and older time machine backups from my ext. HD in a procedure that would allow me to continue backing up with TM but restarting with the most recent recovered "uncorrupted" TM backup as the base, thus allowing me access to older backups?
Or is my ONLY alternative to start Time Machine afresh with a full backup today (on a new ext. HD!), and just deem all those valuable Time Machine backups as lost forever?

I've been experiencing a problem with my 2007 MacBook Pro. At seemingly random intervals the computer freezes, the screen goes blue, and restarts at the login screen. It does NOT fully restart the computer, which is why I'm having difficulty finding a solution to this problem since most info online seems to deal with that issue. Â
I took it to the Genius Bar -- they reset the cache and system permissions -- but the problem remains unsolved. There's no new hardware of software I can think of..MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz running Mac OSX 10.6.8. Please let me know if I can provide more info. Â

I am having boot up problems on my imac 27-inch. I pressed the power button and press and held the Option key, I chose the Recovery disk, but the Recovery disk did not start, instead I have the grey Apple logo and it keeps running but will not start.Â
The imac 27-inch was bought refurbished in late 2010. I also have imac apple care from 2010 never used. First time problem. On pressing the Option key during startup, Mach Hard disk and Recovery Disk 10.9 is displayed.
Choosing mac hard disk does not boot up the OS instead I get a big Zero sign with line through it or a big flash question mark sign. Choosing the Recovery Disk 10.9 does not boot up Disk Utility, instead I get the grey Apple logo.

I've got a problematic iMac running mavericks. I tried to do a disk repair in Recovery Mode which didn't work (said it needed a disk repair but could not repair and that I should backup everything). So then I tried to quit out of recovery and restart by choosing the Mac OS HD...it won't restart...it just keeps giving me the Recovery options front page. What should I do?

I recently bought a 2014 iMac (21.5) inch 16GB machine. I'm going batty with it randomly freezing (beach ball) once every 2-4 days for no apparent reason. I've even looked at console logs and can't figure out. I've resetted SMC/PV(whatever), even reinstalled Mavericks (using a clean bootable drive). We use the iMac for two main purposes: Plex Media streaming (once a day really) and we use Juniper VPN to connect to our corporate network (which explains why you see juniper there)Â

Running mid-2009 iMac with latest Mavericks 10.9.4.Â
DVD Player has been performing perfectly in Snow Leopard until this update to Mavericks.Â
I've tried resetting SMC/NVRAM. Reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Tried dumping the plist too. That did nothing. I've re-set SMC/NVRAM...done the Permissions using Disc Utility.Â
I can get a DVD to load selecting the Recovery Mode StartUp disk. Then I reboot and the DVD plays fine using the DVD controls. But ejecting and trying it again - it won't play. Â

I Just reinstall the MacBookPro from zero, without Time Machine, because some App was making a mess. In this new installing, my mac have another "machine name" and "HDD name" because I can't remember the old ones, so the Time Machine don't recognise the bucks-up, When I enter from Finder in the disk of TM, I see all the backups and files, but when I enter from the App TM, It's Clean.Â
So how I can "Rename" the TM Bucks-up so I can restore only the file that I want not all ? Â
