MacBook :: Macbook Unibody Has Slow HDD In Windows Index Value?
Feb 20, 2009
after a lot of thinking I ended up getting a new Aluminum Macbook! First Mac ever, so yay me!Anyway, when I booted into windows the first time I put in the Leopard install disk and everything went fine. When i booted back into windows i noticed "SMBus controller" and "Coproccesser" were not installed correctly. I looked at the Boot Disk DVD, ran "NvidiaChipset.exe", and after a reboot everything was great!
Then I ran window Experience index and my HDD is getting a pathetic score of 2.0. Just wondering if anyone else has this issue and how/if they got it working again.

I am still fairly new to the Mac, had mine just over a month now. What has struck me is how slow spotlight is. I come from Windows 7, which has a fantastic instant search. I am not sure if my expectations of spotlight are off or if I have some issue I am unfamiliar with. I've researched this quite a bit. There do seem to be random complaints about spotlight. Usually people recommend getting more ram, rebuilding the index, or repairing permissions. I have tried repairing permissions, that is about it. I am not sure how the index is rebuilt, or I would be willing to try that.
What seems to happen is sometimes I just do not get the results I want. I will type in a query, and wait for 10 - 20 seconds for the document I want to show up. It usually never does. If I delete the query, then try again immediately afterwards, the document I want shows up. Is this behavior expected? This is snow leopard fully updated on a Macbook Pro 2.53Ghz i5 and 4GB Ram with the 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive. While the query is running, I have Word, Outlook, Safari, and sometimes Xcode and the terminal open. Should I just leave it be, that is how it is, deal with it? Or is rebuilding the index something I have to do regularly, or maybe some other voodoo magic trick?

I just got a brand new macbook pro 13". I'ts booting in about 3 minutes without power. and then takes about 3 minutes after I log in just to get all it's s***t sorted out. I ran that 32/64 bit kernel application and put it back on 32 bit after it booted slow in 64 bit. Otherwise I dunno. Is this this supposed to be so slow?

I occasionally get the BSOD sometimes on the Windows XP side of things in Boot Camp. I always use a mouse on the Windows side, as the trackpad is very glitchy and buggy. Sometimes, when I use the mouse for a prolonged period of time, I accidently touch the trackpad forgetting all of the sudden that i had the mouse (or i use it to scroll down) and the whole thing blue screens on me. It has happened 8 times already, each time blue screening after touching the mouse. I don't know why, but I find out that the mouse drivers are the one that is messing up my Windows XP SP3.

I have today received a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, and am looking forward to installing it on my MacBook (early unibody version with Core 2 Duo processor, recently upgraded to Snow Leopard - version MacBook 5,1 - with 2.4GHz Processor and 4GB RAM).
The question is simple, but I am utterly confused when searching for the answer...!
Should I install the 32bit or the 64bit version of windows? (both the disks are in the box). I would like a smooth installation, and realise that 32bit should work no problem. However if all the drivers are available for 64bit windows, and it works then I see no reason not to install that version. I am confused because there is reference on the Apple website of this version of the MacBook not being supported for 64bit despite having a 64bit processor (??) Also the vast majority of the information on the Apple website seems to refer to Vista 64bit. I imagine that this will be quite confusing for many users, as it has been for me!
I will only install windows once, and would obviously like to install the potentially faster OS if it will be straightforward, and everything will work as it should (have read about problems with the iSight/backlit keyboard etc. - but these may now be fixed).

Anybody with a Unibody Macbook Pro able to confirm if any of the new Nvidia graphics drivers allow for the integrated 9400M graphics to be used on Windows instead of the dedicated 9600GT? Running the 9400M would give better battery life than the 9600GT if this is possible.

Ive been loving this Macbook Pro 2.66ghz so I decided to get back into gaming. I installed my Windows 7 beta(Build 7000) and then installed Crysis. Now, when windows 7 got done installing it did "windows" updates and installed a Nvidia driver update. My question is this, are their any other drivers that I need for graphics or gaming? Also, what general settings are used for crysis on this model? And last is their any way I can get sound working correctly? It wont work for some reason and I have lost my button controls.

I just had to switch to a new (late '08 unibody) MacBook Pro. I was able to transfer my Mac files from my 2007 MBP, but the Boot Camp partition didn't get copied by default. I tried moving it with WinClone but when I boot to Windows the machine enables the backlight, spins up the CD, but never does anything else.
I tried to completely remove and recreate the Boot Camp partition but 3 different WinXP CDs (SP2 and SP3) do exactly the same thing. My original WinXP CD is from SP1 so I've tried grabbing a few slipstreamed disc images off the net. They all behave the same.

The default Cirrus Logic driver for BootCamp outputs at 64dB. It makes no sense why they would put a cap on it since the driver outputs at 74dB in OSX. I have modified the driver and removed the volume cap so it now outputs louder in Windows than OSX!
Volume in Windows Before: 64dB
Volume in Windows After: 80dB
You can get the driver at:
[URL]
(Windows 7/Vista 32+64 Bit Driver)
It should work with any of the following Cirrus Logic chips:
CDB4206
CS4206A
CDB4207
It really helps with YouTube videos that have horrible volume or if you like to have music that fills the whole house.
Let me know if you want the XP driver with the volume uncapped so I can work on it as well.

Installing the RC of Windows 7 on my Macbook and everything works perfectly fine however it takes ages to start up. The screen will stay at a black screen with a single blinking white cursor for around a minute when trying to start up the system. This is a windows download straight from MSDN so the windows operating system is clean and nothing fishy is going on.
Anyone else have this issue and/or found a way around it?

i got a Macbook Pro Unibody with express card slot and i was wondering if its possible to get an express card device like an express card solid state drive, express card SDHC, or express card ESata and install bootcamp on the expresscard device. I want to be able to boot up Windows xp or something and play games.
I have researched it and so far all i have been finding is people saying its possible and some people saying its too slow.

I have a mid 2010 MacPro 12 2.66 Ghz cpu system with 48 GB of ram. I was running Windows 7 32 bit on my Apple SSD drive, but thought that it would be interesting to see the performance difference if I installed Windows 7 64 bit. Due to SSD space limitations Windows 7 64 bit was installed on an internal hard disk rather than the SSD drive. Here are the results:
Windows 7 32 bit on Apple SSD TS512B configured with
2 GB of RAM
8 CPUs
Enable Adaptive Hypervisor checked
Processor 7.7
Memory 4.5
Graphics 6.0
Gaming 6.0
Hard disk 6.9
overall 4.5 (lowest score).
Windows 7 64 bit on Hitachi 2 TB drive HDS722020ALA330 configured with
8 GB of RAM
8 CPUs
Enable Adaptive Hypervisor checked
Processor 7.8
Memory 7.9
Graphics 6.0
Gaming 6.0
Hard disk 7.9
overall 6.0
I was surprised by the increase in memory speed, and even more so by the hard disk improvement - even though on a physical disk rather than an SSD. In two cases (memory and hard disk) it hits the maximum performance number possible of 7.9.

Here's a new one for me. My 3 media keys don't work for any applications such as Windows Media Player, iTunes, Open Pandora. Everything else works though?!? I reinstalled the keyboard driver and there has been no change. It's like those keys are disabled. Pressing fn will let them use their typical F function, so they work, it's just being blocked by the BootCamp manager or something.
Something else - they keys are invisible to the OS. I can't use a 3rd party hotkey manager to just reassign them.

When and how often does Spotlight index a drive? After 1-1/2 months of owning my MBA, Spotlight is indexing my drive today. I don't know if it is doing it for the first time. But it is the first time I noticed it, as it is slowing down everything, and is taking forever (~ 1-2 min for every 1%).
I would have thought my drive would be all indexed by now -- 90+ days of owning it.
I wonder if it has anything to do with what I am doing on my computer today, that may have trigger this. I copied 3 dvd movie files over and was ripping them with Handbrake today to get ready for a trip next week. I also connected an external drive to have it re-formated. However, after all the ripping was done, and external drive removed. It is still indexing at the moment (2 more hours to go according to the progress bar).
I am tempted to restart the computer, and stop the indexing. But then I shouldn't, if it's a part of the normal routine.

New mac user here. Running latest Lion (10.7.4) on a Macbook pro. I have Paragon NTFS installed, and reading/writing to NTFS volumes has worked fine. However, I am having an issue with spotlight on my external hard drive (500 gb, NTFS formatted). It simply does not work. Searching my internal main hd works fine.
I have tried several suggested solutions to this problem already. This includes adding and removing the hard drive from the privacy tab of spotlight. I also tried several terminal commands that I found online such as "sudo mdutil -E" and "sudo mdutil -i on". These all indicate that indexing on my external drive is in fact on. Spotlight does not seem to be indexing the drive. HOWEVER it does return results for folders that I have opened. Seems kind of strange. Doesn't help me much, as I am not about to open 1000's of folders and files just so they can be found through spotlight.

i have newish MBP and iMac. I also run several windows 7 based pc's. Over the last couple of weeks the download speed on both mac's has declined badly. Trying to download drivers for an HP printer yesterday and was downloading at around 25kbps on both macs, ended up downloading on windows pc at around 800kbps instead, same with any other downloads, was getting over 1.2mbps on windows last night whilst my macs struggle toexceed 30kbps making them almost unusale. I am a relative newcomer to apple, love build quality and feel but am nor too happy with this situation, have tried using different internet connections too - tethering to my cell, same result - 2 different machines so it seems to me the issue sits somewhere within Lion.

I have a new MacBook (Dec '08) and everything is working fine with one exception. When I type numbers into the calculator app they appear on the screen in slow motion with a nice long pause as each number typed is displayed. On our iMac the calculator app just flies along and has no problem keeping up no matter how fast I enter in numbers. Any ideas where to start on this one? Besides the standard software we have installed Microsoft Office and Handbrake.

I have a Macbook Pro core 2 duo era 2007, OS 10.6.8, with an interesting problem I've not encountered in reading other issues. Here's the system profile, to get that out of the way: [code] Enabled Other than the faulty video card that seems standard for this run of the Pro, I have never had an issue. I have just replaced the battery from the original battery that came with the computer. It was useless to the extent of the word, but my budget did not allow me to purchase a new battery until recently. The battery info only stated "Replace Now" and the LED meter no longer functioned. The battery held no charge, and the computer only ran off of wall power. Up until a few days before I replaced the battery, this provided no trouble. However, it began one day to startup extremely slowly (5 minutes or more on the Apple logo startup screen, and then more time to load dock/top screen toolbar/etc. It also failed to recognize the external HD I frequently use with this computer. My theory was that it was simply underpowered on account of the failed battery, and the internal HD or the CPU was just not able to run properly. I finally put a new battery in hoping that it would fix the issue, but no avail. My startup time seems slightly less, but it seems as if the computer has not loaded interface protocols, as the computer is unresponsive to attempts to open the dock or a finder window, or even hover over battery or volume icons. After 5-10 minutes it finally kicks in and I can use my computer without problem, with the exception of the external HD, which will still not load.I have run disk utility, verified my HD, no errors reported. I have the activity monitor up which shows a pretty minimal load on the CPU and disk usage. Nothing I can think of would explain the problem my computer has suddenly adopted.

I have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage. The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my
MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.
I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.
