I had my first leopard problem on my 1.67 15" powerbook last night. I lost bluetooth so I restarted, I went to the activity monitor and there was a kernel task eating up 152 mb of my ram. All updates are current and I have 2gb of ram. Any ideas as to what this action is doing. I also have a dual 2.4 g5 with 3.5 gb of ram(but no kernel task issues).

My computer keeps freezing and applications keep shutting down unexpectantly. So when I went into the activity monitor I saw that Kernal_task and inkjet1 seem to be taking up the most CPU, threads, and memory. What are they? How can I make my computer more efficient? Are these processess causing my computer to be so slow and freezy?

I have been experiencing the fan running at high rpm and the computer completely slowing down when there is slight pressure applied to the bottom of my macbook pro. I went on Activity Monitor and it shows kernel_task running at over 100% cpu usage. I have already tried resetting PRAM and SMC but those did not work.

I've had my macbook pro repaired a few weeks ago (new battery and keyboard).. Ever since then every time I boot it its superslow ... + with high activity on kernel_task.. When I close the lid and open it after 5 seconds again the problem is gone.

In the memory tab in activity monitor, it shows kernel_task which takes up 440 MB. It takes a huge amount of my memory. Also, my macbook pro is running down. I believe that one of the reason for this is kernel task. How do I fix this?Â
Is there any specific reason Kernel_Task seems to think he owns the place? What gives? It's like I turn my MacBook on and he's all like "oh hai! Ize just a system task! 50mb of memory? That's cool that's cool" Then only 2 hours later he's all like "Nah man, I just needed some more room see, it's like 120mb ain't dat much, k?"
I know that OS X handles ram real good and all, by freeing memory when it's required for higher-priority tasks, but I also know that it takes a bit more time to clear that memory AND re-allocate it...
So, is this a memory leak? And while I'm at it what about iChat Agent and Colloquy that are battling out to be RAM champ?
OH, and I haz 2gb installed at the moment.
I've been recently realizing that every time i use safari or socialite for a few mins I get a lot of 'beach ball' time. The application would show in red (not responding) in activity monitor and kernel_task would have over 1,900 threads, that will decrease slowly after I force quit the applications.

I have a 13inch MBP running Mavericks 10.9.4 with a 2.7 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 500GB HD. I just recently had the machine Factory Reset. The only APP's I've added are PAGES, NUMBERS and KEYNOTE. When I check the ACTIVITY MONITOR it indicates that out of 16GB of RAM MEMORY, 5.51GB is being used. Usually ACTIVITY MONITOR indicates that as much as 9GB RAM is being used. This MBP is 3 years old and I clearly upgraded the RAM from 4GB (I think) to 16GB. Since this MBP used to run with only 4GB of RAM total; it seems to me that the current amount of memory being used, from 5.51GB up to 9GB out of 16GB total RAM is unusually high. In addition, the above numbers were displayed when only Safari and Activity Monitor are running. Is this normal for Mavericks OSX?

Noticed i was uploading at high speed (8MB/s) constantly. So i check activity monitor, and kernel_task is uploading huge amount of data, so far 20+gb this morning...
I'm not getting a massive CPU usage (10-15%).Â
Tried restarting, just starts up again after a couple of minutes.
When I open Activity Monitor, kernel_task is using approx 240 MB of real memory, and 67 of virtual. All I have open is Safari (and Activity Monitor)Seems like alot of real memory for one process.
View 6 Replies View RelatedA few hours ago, I noticed my MBP start hanging and generally processing very slow. Apps would freeze at random times, and generally a lot of odd behavior.
I checked the activity monitor to see what might be causing this. It turns out, the process "kernel_task" is using almost 100% of my CPU. It has stayed within the 70-100% range, and has yet to go down. I tried many things, including restarting my Mac many times, but it remains the same.
Does anyone know why "kernel_task" is taking up so much of my CPU? Is there a way to somehow "reset" the process to get it back to normal?

EDIT: I just want to add that I think the "kernel_task" might have started eating CPU when I stopped a RAR program in the middle of extracting an archive. I'm not 100% sure though that this is when the problem started.
I have a program called Free Memory.It shows you how much available RAM you have left to use. Last week, my available RAM, which is usually somewhere between 3GB-5GB, was down at about 250MB! I checked the RAM usage in Activity Monitor, and it showed that Quicktime was using about 5GB of RAM. Yes 5GB.I closed Quicktime and the RAM jumped back up.I reopened it and I could actually watch as my RAM just poured off. In less than 2 minutes, it went from 5GB available to about 100 MB again.Today, the same thing happened, but the RAM sucker was Shockwave. Has anybody heard of this happening before? If so, what is the solution?Here is some more info. In the "console" I often get these --- Exception Type:

I looked in iStat Pro, at then saw that Safari was eating up one entire core of my processor. I am running one window with 3 tabs, another web archive, another Google search, a Google Image search, a window with a Youtube HD video running+a tab with a Google Video search. Is this to be expected with this much running? I am using Spaces.

You can force 64-bit kernel but some of your hardware will not be working.
So all that marketing crap about the benefits of 64-bit etc are all B.S.
I don't want a million threads about how this will not effect the running of 64 bit apps, etc. because it will. Your 64-bit app will run but it will not be able to address more than 4Gb of RAM.
There are also many more advantages to having a 64-bit kernel.
I've got a problem that is really getting on my nerves now and I have no idea what is causing it.
Basically I will have switched on my MBP with around 2-3GB of HDD space free, and after working on it for around 2-3 hours with applications that shouldn't demand any space whatsoever (Firefox, Safari, Preview), I get that little OS X error that tells me I have limited space left.
As I mentioned before I have no idea why this is happening. Has anyone experienced anything similar, as I'm desperate for a solution. I can't keep deleting important personal files every few hours in order to keep the system running.
I recently filled my scratch disks, thinking it was due to all the photos I have on my MAC, i began moving them all to a backup external hard drive and then removing them from my MAC. I managed to move about 60GB of photos off my machine and contined using my MAC as usual. The next day after adding nothing or even using my mac my memory has somehow filled itself back up and i now have only 1GB left on my hard drive with nothing to show from it. I thought it may be a virus and have ran Sophos anti virus software but found none. what i can do to stop my mac from being so memory hungry?       Â

I have the latest iMac i5 with 4GB of memory; however, 32 bit MS Office and 64 bit MacMail chew up memory like crazy. At this moment, I have less than 1/2 a Gig left. I stopped using Safari because it ate up memory so fast. Chrome is a lot better.I find that I have to restart Office apps and MacMail periodically or else.I didn't have this problem with my old G4 with one GiB of memory.Is this normal or is there something wrong with my iMac?Is there something I should be doing other that quitting MS Word periodically and then rebooting it? Is letting an Office app stay open a no no?

However, for some strange reason, my inbox on outlook.com will only hold up to 2 weeks of mail. My inbox in Mail will still be intact, yet for the life of me, I can't figure out why my webmail inbox is disappearing. I've checked every possible setting on outlook.com to no avail. I've also checked Mail's settings, but haven't seen anything as far as deleting older mail. BTW, we're allowed 25 gigs on outlook.com so they shouldn't be deleting them automatically.

i have an imac 21' with OS 10.5 leopard and all the updates installed and everything is supposed to be running smoothly.and i use the iStat pro to track everything. a week ago, i noticed something really strange. something is downloading on my computer and eating all the bandwidth to the extent i can't even browse the internet. i quit all the programs running but still it was not faltering. the only thing that seemed to work is to turn off airport and turning it on again, is there any other way to know what is doing that to me and how to stop it. i read somewhere about littlesnitch but it did not help me. any suggesstions on what does this and how to manage it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI downloaded this program that would back up my computer at 3:30 every morning. It was a scheduling app for Time Machine, so it didn't want to back up at inconvenient times. The trouble is that it eats hard drive space all day long. I can't figure out why? It will eat about 30 GB until disk is full and then reset. If I restart it resets. Then slowly climb it's way back down to near full.Â
So I tried deleting the program that does it. It's still eating my hard drive space and telling time machine to start at 3:30 in the morning. I have no idea what the program was called. Time Machine Scheduler I think. Either way, it said it would clear my preferences once I deleted it which it did not. Now I can't find the company that made the program to email them. There is nothing in my apps. Not sure what to do to reset it.Â
Also, will the eating of HDD space happen with every Time Machine Scheduler? Having a back up at 3:30 am is really helpful for me but it is not helpful if Time Machine is constantly preparing for it in the background, which slows the computer down and is worse than the inconenience of Time Machine backing up when it wants.Â
