Mac Pro :: Why Doesn't The Fan Rev-up Higher To Remain In The Low 70's Like It Did Before

Feb 29, 2012

I'm the proud owner of a wonderful and powerful Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) which I have "modded" to support a 6-core Intel XEON processor. (Just using the "official" MacPro5,1 firmware). No problems at all with that.I installed the processor using the finest thermal paste, trying to spread it very evenly and not too thick or too thin, and then refitting the sink appropriately by tighting each single screw by just a slight turn and then the one across, and so on.Now I'm unsure if the thermal paste works perfectly or not. My temperatures, under very intense and heavy load with multiple applications (prima95, memtest, etc) it reached the low 70's by winding up the fans. But suddenly, a few minutes later, it the fans slowed down and the temp raised to mid 90s. so I turned it off...Now using an enconding application, like handbrake, I do get values of high 70's to low 80's but the fan remains (too) slow (in my opinion)Is this normal? Am I just too cautious? Why doesn't the fan rev up higher to remain in the low 70's like it did before?

MacBook Air :: Set Higher Minimum Fan Speed

Feb 25, 2009

SMCFanControl lets me set a higher minimum fan speed on my MacBook Pro (I like to keep it at about 3600rpm instead of 2000rpm minimum). Is there a way to do this with the MacBook Air? SMCFanControl doesn't seem to detect the MacBook Air properly. Essentially I want it to run at around 3600rpm and increase to 6200rpm as needed. It should never be running lower than 3600rpm.

MacBook Pro :: Is There Any Likelihood The Next 15" Will Have Higher Res?

I've got a late '07 17" MBP, and looking forward to the next line-up of MBPs early next year. Just wondering if anyone thought they'd up the res (or have an option) like they did with the 17"? As a coder, I'd prefer having smaller text and being able to fit more in.

Spent almost 40 minutes on the phone this morning which was mostly about explaining that the macbook DOES have a rubberized bottom and not little feet. MacBook Pro :: Bootcamp/parallels - Automatically Use Higher End GPU?

Jul 20, 2009

So apparently in OSX, you have to manually tell the MBP when you want to use the higher end GPU (for graphics-intensive activities). I think this is pretty dumb - the system should do this for you. But anyway, if you're running Windows under BootCamp or Parallels, does Windows automatically use the higher end GPU, or how does that work exactly?

MacBook :: Setting Wallpaper With Higher Resolution

Oct 21, 2009

I have an aluminum Macbook Unibody 13" that I just picked up off craigslist and was wondering if anyone new what I can expand the memory to. It has 2 GB Ram in it right now, and it is the 2.4 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 250 GB Hard Drive. Also I am trying to download apple wallpapers for it, but when I set it as my wallpaper it doesn't look as clear on my background as it does in the preview, even when I copy and set the one with higher resolution. I must be doing something wrong, if you don't mind could someone take me through the steps of how to properly download and apply wallpapers, as your background?

MacBook Pro :: Higher Resolution Screen Matters?

Feb 3, 2010

Given that the computer scales images to fit the resolution of the screen. Why does having a higher resolution screen matter? I mean I can play 1080p video on a 13 inch MBP and it still looks good. Why do people complain so much about how intolerable the low screen resolution is on the MBPs. Apple must have some kind of magic because images and video look great to me. Take a 13 inch MBP, would the same 1440x900 sized picture look that much better if the native resolution was 1440x900? If the quality loss is so noticeable how has Apple been able to get away with shipping the product?

MacBook Pro :: How Can I Work To MBP With Higher PPI Than External Display?

Aug 13, 2010

I'm thinking about updating my Macbook Pro C2D 15'', which is already 3 years old. I'm planning to get the 27'' Apple Cinema Display (finally!) when it come out later next month. I've decided that I'd go with 15'' Core i7 Macbook Pro, but couldn't make up my mind on the screen resolution; Standard 1440x900 or Hi-Res 1680x1050.The thing that really bugs me that the pixel-per-inch (PPI) of the MBP and ACD. The ACD 27'' has 108.79 PPI, with relatively close to 110.27 PPI on STD MBP, while the High-Res MBP will give me 128.65 PPI. This would mean that the text on the High-Res MBP screen would be a bit smaller. So, my question would be for the person who're using current ACD (24'' ?) with Hi-Res 15'' MBP or 17'' MBP (which has 113.xx PPI):1. Does the difference in text size seems noticeable when you switching from one screen to another?

MacBook Pro :: Swapping MBP 15" Screen For Higher Res Panel?

Feb 10, 2010

I've been eyeing up the new 15" alu MBP but the 1440x900 screen is a bit crappy. Considering the cost of the damn thing I'd expect a higher-res screen; plus I've been staring my 15" MBP sitting beside my 1920x1200 monitor for almost 2 years and it's looking decidedly dated.

I've repaired broken laptops before, and I've got a friend with access to GSX service manuals so I'd be able to do the handwork. Unfortunately, I know damn all about panel compatibility. Basically I'd replacing a stock Apple panel with one sourced from a parts warehouse. I know Apple has a fetish for unusual mounts and hard-to-replace parts so my biggest fear would be buying a replacement panel and finding out that Apple uses panels with non-standard screw placements or brackets or something like that.

So my question is thusly, if I could find a 15.4" panel (and I know they do exist, HP has a couple of notebooks with 15.4"/1920x1200 panels) could I remove the screen from the alu MBP and drop in the replacement screen?I'd love to hear from someone who has tried it or succeeded, or even if it's just possible

MacBook Pro :: Current Battery Capacity Status Higher

Jun 28, 2010

Do take a look at my current battery capacity. How can my current battery capacity be higher than the Original battery capacity? Anyway if you want to know how I keep it at 99-100% battery capacity
1] Set brightness level to the lowest or most comfortable
2] Turn off Bluetooth/Airport when not in use
3] Try not to use the iSight camera too much
4] Try to do activities that will decrease your battery life only when it's plugged in
5] Put it to sleep instead of shutdown.
6] Keep it plugged in as much as possible, it's okay to use 20-30% of the battery when you're in the bus or in places that has no power adapters. In fact, it makes the MBP healthier.

MacBook Pro :: Get Audio To Receiver With Higher Quality Than The Headphone Jack?

Apr 29, 2012

I recently got a receiver and surround sound speaker system.  The quality of the audio from the CD player connected to it is far beyond the quality of the audio that comes from the MacBook pro via headphone jack to RCA connection.  This was confirmed by burning a CD from the MacBook, placing it in the CD player then testing the two against each other  -  the same audio piece from the CD player or the MacBook, both connected to the same receiver/speaker set up.  What other options might get better audio quality from the MacBook to the receiver?
