my current drive is FUJITSU MHY2250BH which came with the macbook.
I need a biggeer drive, the biggest possible, and I would like 7200rpm as i do alot of audio intensive work etc and really push the laptop.
i found a 500gb fujitsu, but the dimensions are slightly diff to my current drive.
should i make sure the dimensions are exactly the same? eg to the millimetre??
i just want to know about what specs to watch out for.
i live in uk, so dont really want to buy from a usa retailer.
also, would i be able to use my current drive as an external drive? how could i plug it into macbook? an enclousre? or just a wire?
i also have a bootcamp partition currently.
would the new drive be a simple change over? ie. no need to reinstall any app or boot camp from scratch again? i think i read that we can just use a time machine back up to put my current macbook drive state onto the new drive.
I have a 1st generation Macbook laptop. I swapped out the original 80GB HD & installed a larger 320GB internal HD I recently bought on Ebay. At 1st, everything seemed ok, the hard drive mounted ok and I went ahead and proceeded to 1st partition the drive into 4 80GB separate partitions, with a plan to install Snow Leopard on one of the partitions, have 1 for room for a backup drive, and the other 2 partitions would host Windows 7 & possibly Linux, via (bootcamp). After experiencing some frustration with the installation of Snow Leopard, it appeared everything was ok, so then I went ahead and migrated my entire original 80GB mac factory HD over into 1 of my partitions. Everything seemed to go quite smoothly up to this point. However, soon afterwards, my HD somehow was no longer mounting! It still has not mounted ever since this time. I have tried taking the HD out and swapping it with the old one and it still will not mount. However, the original hard drive mounts right away without any issues. My entire livelihood is essentially thru my computer as an online grad student, so I went out to Frys Electronics & purchased a WD Scorpion Blue 500 GB HD after experiencing all of these issues. The new HD is working flawlessly. However, my issue and question is, what can anyone with technical knowledge suggest I do to completely erase the other non-mounting HD? I plan to send the non-mounting HD back for reimbursement to the Ebay seller soon. I'm concerned because, as I previously mentioned up above, this HD still potentially is holding all of my personal information from my previous drive I had for years installed into the macbook.

Step 1:
Buy 2.5" external Firewire 800 hard drive enclosure
Buy 2.5" SATA drive (probably 500gb WD Black or something)
Step 2:
Whack new drive into new enclosure and fire it up
Step 3:
Clone my existing 250GB internal MBP hard drive to the new one in the enclosure using Carbon Copy Cloner etc
Step 4:
Remove new hard drive from enclosure and use it to replace the internal hard drive in my Mac
Step 5:
All being well stick the old hard drive in the enclosure and use it as an external
Well, I'm a new owner of a MacBook Pro 13" and the Hard Drive is only 160GB I believe which is plenty of space for what I use it for but I would much rather have my Music/Movies/Pictures and all media separate from that space. I was just thinking of getting a portable External Hard Drive for all of my media but then I could also upgrade my 160GB drive to let's say a 500GB Drive and do away without an External drive. What would you do? Upgrade your existing internal HD or get an External HD?
The MacBook Pro usually just stays on the desk anyways so an External HD wouldn't be any inconvenience to me but if I wanted to just unplug it and go will that harm anything? Also, there is plenty of External Hard Drives available right now and I was wondering if any were better than others? I just want something basic, portable, and works with a mac. No firewire needed, USB is fine with me. I was really looking at the My Passport from WD and was wondering if the non Mac Ready versions work with a Mac anyways? [URL]
My internal 200GB HD is nearing capacity and I was wondering what my options were for an upgrade. I think I found a good deal on a 500GB internal HD from macsales, the drive is a 2.5" and is 9.5mm in height. The price is fair, about $100 and all I'm looking to do is add more space for music.
With this said, the 5400 drive seems to suffice. Is this the maximum size for an internal drive and has anyone else successfully added a 500GB drive to their MacBook?
I read early discussion posts on this topic and thought by now Apple would have corrected this poblem but apparently not. I updgraded my MacBook Pro last night to Lion and since last evening I have had 5 black screen (failures) and had to power off and reboot. Is there a known correction or update to this problem? It is extremely disappointing as I need my Mac for my business and cannot afford to send it to a depot for a five day repair.
This same problem was happening to me with an older OS but ONLY when I used both PowerPoint and Parallels at the same time. For this probem I took the MacBook into the Genius Bar and had to leave it there through the weekend and all day Monday. They told me after running multiple tests they found no hardware problems and the issue had to be software. The only fix was a five day depot repair. I thought I would manage by not using PowerPoint and Parallels together but now, with the Lion Upgrade it happens with ALL apps and when I simply try to read an email.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a newbie desperately seeking tech advice on how to remedy a full-to-overflowing 160GB internal HD problem and add more RAM. I have a 2009 Mini (2.26 core 2 duo, 2gb 1067 DDR3 RAM), along with a pair of 1TB external USB HDDs (one 1TB external USB drive dedicated for time machine), and a 3.5" 300GB Velociraptor drive borrowed from a friend. MOst important to me is I want to absolutely minimize any chance of jeopardizing/risking losing ANY files/data already on the drive or avoid any time-comsuming selective file deletion just to make room on the "Macintosh HD" internal drive.
One friend suggested I make a bootable clone of my internal drive onto a larger drive, which I did with a program called SuperDuper, i made the copy onto the Velociraptor drive. Presently the WD raptor is running on an external USB docking station. Then I was told to make the external drive my startup drive. However, all my external drives use USB (no Fire wire interfaces). The problem is when I go to system preferences the only startup disk choices are the (full) Macintosh 160GB HD and Network Startup. I cant for the life of me figure out how to specify one of the external drives as a startup disk, although the 3rd party application SuperDuper! claimed to make a totally bootable clone onto the Raptor drive.
As a short term solution, I also received advice on copying a bunch of the larger files, like my iTunes video library (at least 50GB) onto one of the external USB drives, deleting the contents of the Movies folder on Mac HD, and inserting an alias for the files or folder pointing to the copied movie files destinations on one of the external 1TB USB disks. I'm scared it will adversely affect iTunes being able to find the files on the external drives. Can I make an alias for the whole iTunes Movies folder or do I have to make them for each of the files I copy?
I need to summon the courage to try and open the Mini case and see if I can implant the cloned drive ultimately, but I wanted to try and get it to boot externally first before I got into the innards. Anybody have a link to a photo or video step by step how to on the actual case cracking operation?

Expressed another way, what I want to do is simply upgrade the internal drive with a larger and faster drive without any risk of losing data. I was thinking there out to be a relatively painless route to employ an external drive to function as a logical extension of the internal drive, so that OSX would see the stock internal drive plus an external drive as a single "virtual" volume. Although pricey, I was considering a SSD drive for significant performance increases.
As to RAM upgrades, what type of memory slot arrangement is inside the case? I wanted to upgrade to 8GB, but 4GB would be acceptable. I need some recommendations on what type of RAM modules to obtain to make this happen.

I got an idea from wanting to upgrade my iMac hard drive from 1TB to 2TB. So I thought shouldn't the iMac optical drive be upgradable as well? I looked on eBay and there were a few Bluray internal drives for sale like this one [URL:...] The only thing I'm sceptical from buying one is that (1) will the iMac require a driver or will it recognise the drive, and (2) will a standard programme like VLC be able to play BD media? Looks like a good idea to put the iMac's screen to good use. Sorry Apple I'm not going to be downloading HD movies. My internet is not uncapped.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 27" mid-2011 iMac - today I upgraded it to 16GB RAM and added an SSD (in addition to the existing hard drive). The memory upgrade I performed myself but the SSD upgrade was done by a qualified tech.Now my internal speakers no longer appear as an audio output device, instead I have a "digital out / optical digital-out port".
I cannot adjust the volume (my menu bar volume icon is greyed out) and no sound plays either through the speakers or connected headphones once I login, however I hear the startup chime when I first turn it on, so this doesn't appear to be a hardware problem - it is perhaps a driver issue?
Is there any way I can rectify this without reinstalling OS X? I plan to install Yosemite on the SSD once it's out but would prefer to wait rather than installing Mavericks on it first.I have already tried resetting my SMC, resetting my PRAM a few times and also reinstalled the 10.9.4 combo update, but neither have resulted in any changes.

Upgraded to a 1.5TB seagate, followed all instructions as perfectly as possible, but her back together and the lcd screen just glows slightly. When I attach an external display that display works fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I installed the 10.5.8 upgrade on my MacBook4,1 early -08. First impressions was that the screen got really bright. After a coupple of minutes the screen went black. So i called up Apple tech and asked what to do. After a coupple of NVRAM and PRAM (alt + cmd + R + P w. battery removed before) no success. I had to go to work and left it hanging.
When I got back I gave it a shot my self. After hocking up the computer to my TV I could see what I was doing without using a flashlight as a light source on the screen. Managed to reinstall Leopard clean, that didn't help.
Called up Apple tech again and asked for help, but no success there.
Installed Ubuntu 9.04 and the problem resided. So i removed all partitions, incl. the EFI and reinstalled Leopard. Same problem. In anger i tried to alter the screen brightness controls as the screen flashed before my eyes when i used them. I figured out that i could set the brightness to lvl 4 (out of 15) and the light wouldn't go out, at lvl 5 the light would be on for a while and then die. The higher the levels the faster the screen goes black.
Anyone experienced this with the 10.5.8 update?! Do you have any solution to this problem?
Update: Booted from the install disk while pressing D for diagnostics. Ran the extended test four times without any problems found. Problem remains.
Update: I reinstalled Leopard (10.5.2 that came with the MB) and repaired the permissions after the clean install. Installed Combo Update 10.5.8 and fixed the permissions, same problem still occurs. Clean installed Leopard 10.5.2 again, repaired the permissions. Combo Update 10.5.7, repair permissions, Combo Update 10.5.8 repair permissions. didn't help. Started up in Safe Mode and repaired permissions. The screen goes black after a while in 10.5.2 also. Problem is still unresolved.

I recently purchased a new SSD and would like to input that into my MBP 2012. If I have a partition on my external HDD that contains the carbon copy of my MBP, am I able to clone it into my SSD after I have installed it in the MBP through the USB?

I'm looking for a few good ways to transport and use my UMB. I figure buying a hardshell case & a timbuk2 bag seem like a good combo. Question is - which do you guys think is better, the Speck or Incase cases? Anyone have any experiences? I had the Incase hardshell for my old whitebook.
Seemed to work out alright. The other option I thought of was getting the invisible shield. Anyone have any thoughts?
I want to keep my applications etc on one internal HD and use my second internal HD as a back up.I am a graphic designer, and i have been backing up to an external LACIE Porche 160 Gig firewire HD. This has worked fine, but...My second internal HD (112 gig?) is still loaded with 10.3 and has adobe CS2 on it along with some other crap that I no longer need.I have loaded Adobe CS3 on my primary drive and have all the files I need on that one...What is the best way to set up my second HD as a "slave" drive to improve the performance of my G5 dual 2 Ghz??Will there be any issues now that I loaded Leopard on the primary HD?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

Looking at getting a 13" MPB to replace my aging Macbook. I am aware of the imminent arrival of the next gen next year, but still seriously considering getting a current gen.
Anyway, I am debating between getting the 2.66GHz version with 4GB RAM and the 2.4GHz version with 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB 7200rpm HDD which I will transplant into it. Some stage in the next year or so I will look into getting an SSD and optibay for it.
I know that if I get the faster processor I can upgrade the RAM at a later date, but is the faster processor worth the money, or would I be better spending on RAM?

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. My following problem deals with both MAC and PC. I know this is a MAC forum but I posted here a long time ago and recieved great results.
I've been researching my problem for the past two days and I have given up. I dropped my MacBook and it fails to work. I took the internal HD out in hopes of retrieving the content. I currently have the HD hooked up to a windows PC and my PC recognizes this. After researching why I could not view the contents of the MAC drive with current programs that allow me to do so, I found out the drive turned RAW. After over 10+ programs of trying to find a program that will allow me to explore the RAW MAC HD on my PC, I found 1 program, but I had to buy it in order to extract the files, it was a 200 dollar program, something I will not buy.
My question is, is there a better way of extracting the content of my MAC drive on my PC? I understand I'm using a PC and part of my problem pertains to one but that is all I have. Any recommendations on retrieving my content through certain programs would be great. Even programs that will allow me to at least retrieve my pictures.
I just recently had bought a new Seagate 500gb 7200 HD. I have it already installed in the enclosure and hooked up to my computer via firewire 800 and already have Carbon Copy Cloner installed and working as well. When I go to use CCC the drive doesn't show up.
