MacBook :: How To Retrieve Details From Non Working Computer
Jun 29, 2014
I have a broken Macbook which by the genius bar staff. My machine can be repair for £300. I feel it not necessary
to pay that amount so I am selling the machine for its part etc. However, in order for me to sell the item on ebay, I will need which OS it's running on and all the other details needed to list this item.
My questions is; how to find the details about my computer (I cannot switch on the machine).
I am running Mac OS X Tiger. A friend wants me to retrieve all of the data from an Address Book Backup sent her on a CD from abroad. Nothing I have done works!
The size of the Backup is 5.6MB.
I have created a new account for the purpose. With Address Book (AB) open, File > Revert to address book backup gave only 2 card entries, one being the User and the other the Apple Mac welcome card.
My old Macbook got water damage and broke. I never went to fix it because it was old and I knew it wasn't worth it. However, I upgraded my iPhone (I now have a 5c) and I need to get all my music from my iTunes onto this new phone. I paid for that music and do NOT want to lose it.
Moving on....today my iMac was acting sluggish, I powered it off and on and the screen initially was pixelated. It then went into recover mode. When I tried the disk repair, the message indicated that it could not be repaired. I called support and they suggest that I hook up my mac mini and go into target disk mode. I did this but it wouldn't mount so I wasn't able to move any files. how to retrieve my files and restore my computer?
My computer keeps stalling and rotating beachball won't allow me to move forwards or backwards. Ultimately I need to turn off the power. I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC but neither seems to help for too long.
after my computer had been broken I sent it to apple, but somehow I can not login and I am using a guestuser right now. I am pretty sure that I am using writing in the right password but it does not let me in. How can I login again?
I should make sure "Built-in Output" is selected in my sound settings, but that option doesn't even appear. It's as if my computer forgot it had built in speakers...
My computer is connected to my wifi, and all other devices are working, but my macbook air is not sending any i messages, connecting to the internet, or the itunes store
I am having a problem with my external hard drive. I was using it the other day working with some of the files on it and it shut down my computer a couple times. The second time it did this, after the computer shut down, I would turn it on and then it would go right back off until I removed the hard drive and turned it on and it was fine. Now my computer won't recognize the hard drive at all when i plug it in. The light on the hard drive will come on but it will not show up on my computer.
The hard drive is a WD 1TB Passport and it still works fine with every other computer I plug it into, PCs and macs both.I have a late 2008 13" Aluminum Macbook
OX 10.4.11. Screen freezes when I stop working on computer. Usually can happen anywhere from 5 minutes to hours after I leave and come back. It doesnt happen when I'm working on computer and it doesnt seem to matter what programs I leave open. Ive tried zapping the pram...disabling the screensaver..I did an archive and install of the operating sysem (actually surprized myself by doing that one ) Ive run a disk utility and hardware check.. My computer is running a lot faster now, but it still has frozen up and needs to be restarted by holding down the button for a few seconds.
I am wondering if I am getting a good transfer rate on my time capsule. (Using leopard). If I alt (option) click on the airport icon on the top of the screen, I can get details to my network. One of the details is transfer. I am assuming this is the speed of my network. Do you know what this is measured in? When I have the time capsule as a G router I get a transfer of 130. When I have the TC as an N router, I get a transfer of 200 - 264. Can anyone tell me if these numbers are good, or do I need to do something to get the numbers closer to where they should be.
.I have files I have received over time on my flatpanel imac. You now guess its really old in computer years. I need to transfer these files onto an external hard drive and from then to my newer computer. The problem is that I want to maintain the details in those files. You know how when you right click a pic or sound file and chose view options/details(I forgot what it is) then you get dated created, date modified, last opened, all this extra information? I really need to save this information specially date created. If I transfer them will the new date created be the date of transferring the files or will it maintain its original date?
whenever I opened a web page needing a login ID and password, those two data items were provided for most of them, presumably by Keychain. This no longer happens.
I have Safari>Preferences>Security set to Accept cookies only from sites I visit but checking Accept cookies always makes no difference.
I wanted to know if there were any good software out there that would help me rename a music file and its details (album title, composer, comments). I don't just mean on iTunes but the file in general.
I, like many, am anxiously awaiting my new iMac (3.06, 4850). I just ordered tuesday but i noticed something on my order details online that i dont know what it means. yesterday when i checked the details of my order, under imac 24", it said custom configuration, then you could click it to see the specs. today it says imac 24'/SD and there is no "custom configuration" under it. whats goin on, im not freakin out but curious as to why this change occured. anyone else ever notice this or know what it means? i cant remember whether the /SD was always there or not either.
I have an ibook G4 running the lasted version taht can still run OS9. I was running a program on OS9 and when I quited this program the MAC crashed. I restarted it and got to the login screen. Normally it does not ask me for th login it jst goes straight to the finder window.
When I look the iCloud icon account under system preferences the account shows my name but when I open up "account details" the name field has my wife's name. i have dited this in the detils page but as soon as I log out of system preferences and log back in the name field reverts to my wife's name. This is causing issues with alerts set up in iCal being directed to the wron email address. How can I permanently edit the account name in the details tab of the iCloud section?
screen share with another Mac on the network that I've recently setup to be a server. When I try logging in, with 'iMac' as the name and 'password' as the password, it says that the details are inaccurate, yet I'm fine to login to view folders. The Mac I'm using to login runs Leopard (lates updates) and the other uses Tiger (latst updates), but still, I'm fine to connect to another Mac using Tiger to share the screen.
I have just bought a new MBP, but I've been having this issue for the last year on my iMac trying to access my companies Intranet through Safari. (Or firefox for that matter..) From an MS blog - http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/arc...19/671735.aspx Windows SharePoint Services v3 should work according to that link with Safari+2.
This is the version we are using for our intranet, but my Safari just will not allow it. It is forever requesting me for Name and Password. However when I type the said details in, it just pops up and prompts me once again. So I'm guessing this is an authentication issue? It's becoming really annoying and I'd really like to get around it without having to run XP along side OSX just for Intranet page.
