MacBook :: How To Remove The Security Lock
Dec 8, 2009
I recently lost my keys and now I cannot remove the security lock on my macbook. I have been using it for about three years now and am having trouble finding a replacement key. Is there any other way I could possibly get this lock off, besides a locksmith?

Why did Apple remove the lock screen feature in OS X? It used to be a part of security preferences with the option of having the lock in the right hand side menu bar.

I have a belgian azerty keyboard and OS X in english on my white macbook. Is it possible to change the caps lock key's function to shift lock so that it affects the whole keyboard rather than just the letters? I'd like to be able to type numbers without holding shift.

I recently bought a replacement keyboard on ebay for my MBP and just installed it. It's been about a week, and just today, I noticed the capslock key doesn't work.. I'm not sure if it has been this way, or if it recently just stopped. The light doesn't come on at all.
I was curious if this was a common problem? If not, is their anything I can do as a substitute for caps lock? Another key perhaps? Or, a button on the task bar or something?

I have an original MacBook1,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to password protect my USB Drive. I have heard of OS X Lion being able to password protect USB Drives but I cannot upgrade to Lion, only 10.6.8, which I'm sure you know. I have seen many apps on the Mac App Store, but none are compatible with my MacBook. (Because of my OS and 32-bit. processor.) I want the password to come up automatically when you plug in the USB Drive. Or I would like to have the password come up when you try to open up the USB Drive. I do NOT want to have one that copies something onto the USB Drive that you can put stuff in. I know that must sound very wordy.

One that no one would be able to get in at all? I've read where someone could use the install disc and set a new password. There's no way at all to make my computer totally safe from someone getting into it?

Granted I have no clue if the previous generation MBAs had a lock slot, but I've noticed the new ones don't seem to have a lock slot any where on them, is this true ? or is it well hidden that it doesn't show up on all the pics I've seen. I'm specifically talking about the 13" Air.

Is there a solution to this problem? I am planning to use my MBA at work and it requires me, at some times during the day, to leave my notebook unattended while I go off and do other tasks. Unfortunately, I don't have my own office and I share a work area with other people. Any suggestions?

if caps lock is off, shift of course makes the letter you hit capital. However, if caps lock is on, and you hit shift, the letter is capital, not lowercase. In Windows it would be lowercase. Is my MacBook acting how is should?

I just got a new aluminum macbook, and the only thing that seems like a problem is the caps lock key is not sensitive like the rest of the keys. I tap it like every other key and it usually takes 2-3 or more times before it changes. Is there really anything to do? I hate to take it back for something so trivial. But I am afraid it will bother me more and more.

So by now most, if not all of us know about Apples change to the responsiveness of the Caps lock button on all new keyboards, including the MacBook Pro. Do you prefer the old Caps lock which may have caused some accidental caps or the current, less responsive Caps lock to curb accidental activation?

I got a new Macbook Pro in December and straight away I noticed I have to really jab at the Caps Lock key to activate it, sometimes several times. Pressing it on the left hand side (where my finger naturally reaches to) almost never works. Anyone else have this? Is it a known problem? Would Apple be likely to be able to sort it out if I took it to a store, or am I wasting my time?

Wonder it's just me or hardware/software issue. If I set brightness at 50% with power adaptor on, and sleep, unplug, open lid or do vice versa, the next time when the MBP wake up, the brightness either goes to lowest setting or highest, very annoying. Sometimes I see keyboard light did the same thing but not as frequent as screen backlit.

So I basically just opened my MacBook Pro from when it was charging and the Caps Lock key randomly popped off. It's a brand new i5 15'' HR AG model, really no excuse for that to happen. The closest Apple Store is about 40 miles away, so if you can tell me how to put the Caps Lock key back on myself I would really appreciate it. I tried just putting the bars through the circles and pressing down and it just falls back off immediately, doesn't click on.

I read a few posts and articles before i ordered my new i7 MBP with HR matte display about some of the models sometimees froze all of a sudden, now it seems mine has this same issue.. 3 time now, since i got it on the 25th of May. 15 min ago i was sitting and responding to a thread on Facebook, then out of the blue, everything stops repsonding. System is running, mouse is frozen, nothing i can do but to hit the "big button" and restart the entire system. Loosing any work that i might be doing is actually the worst scenario since im a photographer.. Anyone experience these random freeze ups too ? And last but not least, what will Apple do a about it when i contact them in the morning?.. Replace it or let me cancel my purchase and if replaced, how long does that normally take? (Bought it through Apple Store).

My Hard drive crashed, I installed a new harddrive and put my OS disk in and hit the options tab..All I get is a Grey screen with a picture of a lock and a place to put a password. I have tried all my passwords and nothing... I have a Time Capsule with data back up and I was told that you put the OS disk in and go to utilities then selct the time machine and it should restore from there..
