View 22 RepliesThis must get asked an awful lot, so I'm sorry if I'm continuing the trend. I would be grateful for some advice on connecting a MacBook Pro (the type I think is often described as 'aluminum unibody') to a high-definition monitor. After reading the various guides on MacRumors and elsewhere, I have been led to believe I need a Apple Mini DisplayPort and and HDMI to HDMI cable. To be consistent I have found them both on Amazon - I'd be grateful if someone could check these for compatibility and what-not. Apple Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter cable: [URL] HDMI to HDMI cable: [URL] if you think I'm being too cheap (they're both in pound sterling); I'm trying to get the cables cheaply, but obviously I want the two to work when they arrive. I don't know how easy it is to give advice on things like this, but let me know if more information is needed.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm looking at buying a MacBook Air. I'm interested to know how the MacBook Air handles high definition video. I realise there has already been a thread on this, but the existing thread is rather as confusing there appeared to be issues with the Transformers clip tested by many people, the configurations of MacBook Air were not listed with the results and since then, we have also had Mac OS X 10.5.2 released so I thought it might be nice to condense everyones results in an easy to read format:
Operating System Mac OS X 10.5.1 or 10.5.2
Storage: HDD or SSD
Processor: 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz
Trailer: Preferably something with fast motion.
Resolution: I mainly want to know about 1080p, but 1080i would also be interesting (I was told that 1080i does work, but further confirmation with the above details would be great).
Format H.264 or something else.
If any MacBook Air owners have the time to try a trailer or two off Apple's website Basically, the only reason I will buy the 1.8GHz processor is if it ensures successful playback of 1080p because the 1.6GHz drops too many frames.
We had a new addition to the family (baby) so I decided to get a videocamera. Wanted something future proof, so got a high definition memory card based camera: Sony CX11 Needed a new computer, had an old PC, but for some reason went to the other side and purchased a Macbook- I heard they were very good at editing video (and it is). Within 2 weeks I had completely filled my 250GB hard drive with all this movie footage! I need to get it off my Macbook and free up my hard drive!
Editing in iMovie... no probs. Burning in i DVD... few glitches, but got there in the end. Cool, no probs you think right... NO I have a 1080p TV screen, and a PS3. So i'm recording in 1080i HD footage, but I'm losing all the HD quality!!! The DVD image quality is so poor in comparison with the quality I get when I plug my camcorder into my TV. Its frustrating...................
Is there an application(for mac, obviously) where I can use the iSight to record High Definition videos for Youtube?

1) Is it theoretically correct the 13'' can't display 1080p hd movies because there aren't enough pixels available?
2) Are 720p movies more suited for the 13''?
3) I'm currently using XBMC and AVS Video Converter, does XBMC perform better on certain video format? I still don't know which video format should i play HD movies on my mac
4) Can the current mbp 15'' play full HD movies (1080p)?
My current convert output setting: HD Video 720p H.264/AVC.
I've just been trying to play Dark Knight in HD through iTunes and there is some lag, like the playback stutters (sound is fine, video stutters). How can I remedy this? Surely the Macbook is capable of playing HD without this lag? I've got a 2.4ghz Aluminum Macbook with 4GB RAM and I'm watching the movie on an LED Cinema Display. I was playing the movie through iTunes with no other programs on, and I'd just logged in to my account (although had not restarted the Notebook for several hours).

Do the standard screen get better battery life. If so, how much better?
I'm looking for recommendations for a screen protector for a 15" Macbook Pro. I'm not looking for a cloth that goes over the keyboard, and I would prefer something that covers the WHOLE screen and maintains the clear gloss look.
I had a 1st generation MBP and didn't do anything to protect the screen and regretted it because the keys scuffed it up. I don't want to repeat that mistake.
Right now I'm just keeping the wrapping that came with the computer in between the screen and keyboard for when I close it and travel, but this isn't exactly a good solution.
Google and Amazon searches turned up exactly one that looked like it might work but I couldn't tell if it covered the whole screen (not jsut the lcd display area). Most of what turns up in search has pictures suggesting it is for the 1st gen. MBP and doesn't make mention specifically for the current models.
what should i used to clean the aluminum unibody, when it comes to the lcd screen i know alcohol and other solutions are bad for lcd because of the thin flim layer but the macbook pro has glass so it should'nt hurt the screen to use those kind of products.

My wife's aluminium MacBook bought six months ago has run cool until the last few days. Now when she leaves the machine alone and the screen saver comes on, the fan cranks up to 3800-4800 rpm. The screen saver hasn't changed, nor has anything else with the exception of the recent software updates. Does anyone know if the new Safari update (or the iLife updates) could cause this type of problem?

I honestly haven't tinkered with any Mac laptops once the unibodies came out, so I am hoping someone can shed some light, give some advice, and maybe throw out some ideas for repairs.
Question is: high res screen or not? I'm getting a BTO so store-purchase is out of question anyways. I do graphics editing, but not heavy. Mostly i'm interested in the screen to view nicer photos (raw images), movies, etc.

I am looking to pick up a 15" macbook pro and since I will be using it for coding (in both OSX and Win7) i am looking at the high res screen.
However I also want to use the machine for gaming in Windows 7 and in some cases I will probably need to lower the resoultion to get better framerates. Which resolutions are supported on this screen? I cannot find any documention on this. Also are all modes supported in Windows and does for example 1280x800 still look somewhat ok on the high res screen?
Anyone with the high res 15" model care to answer?
I've noticed on my MacBook Pro (late 2013 with retina, 13", 2,4GHz i5, 256GB SSD, 8GB Ram) that when I run the display on low brightness, there is a high pitch noise coming from the screen (inverter problem)? It seems as it disappears when adjusting to either a high brightness or turning it to zero.

I live in Canada, and no stores seem to sell any configuration that includes this upgrade. I'm more comfortable purchasing my laptop from a store than the online Apple Store. Is this true for locations in the states as well? I would like to get my MBP sometime in the next month or so, is it looking like I'll have to purchase it online?

View 19 Replies View RelatedI wanted to ask for some advice on getting a new 15 inch MBP. I currently use a 2.2GHZ SR MBP with Anti Glare Screen. The computer works fine after a recent mother board change but I'm concerned about a future GPU failure. Applecare expires in June 2010. I was waiting for the refresh before buying and was wondering if I should go with the refurb 2.66GHZ MBP or a new i5 model. My priority is an anti glare screen and I notice that I would need to buy a high resolution screen in order to get that option on the new models. I'm not a power user and don't play games. My concern on the new model is that the text will be too small. How does the processing power compare on these two models and is the high resolution screen still readable for less than perfect eyes?

View 14 Replies View RelatedMacbook Pro 17" Text size issue with High Resolution screen. Just got a Macbook Pro 17 that I love except for one thing - text size on many programs. I understand the reason for it and I did not want a 15 inch as I tend to work with multiple programs at once. I am not tied to an office so that rules out buying an external screen, So I have been trying to find solutions that makes working with in different programs less of a strain on my eyes. Here are some of the workarounds I have found to programs I use and programs that I have had no luck with. And please it is not a problem with eyesight as this seems to be a common problem for many owners. I like to sit well back from my screen not 2 inches away! Mail. This is the big one. It is easy to set the default font to a larger size and that helps with incoming mail. Or you can add a small/larger button with the customize toolbar option but there is no fix for outgoing mail. I write a lot of mail so by the end of the day I am squinting and I do not want to send all my mail in jumbo text. Here is the only fix that I found that I like. In terminal (in utilities) put in the following......................
Whenever my screen is not turned up to the maximum brightness, a really high pitched sound is emitted from the laptop. If you've ever heard the "mosquito ringtone", that's basically what it sounds like. Really odd. It's definitely got something to do with the screen brightness, and I basically can't use my laptop at medium brightness because the sound drives me a little nuts. Turning the brightness to the lowest setting makes the sound less intense, but it's still audible.
