MacBook Pro :: Does Not Start Past Gray Screen / Apple Logo And Rolling Circle?
My Macbook Pro is not starting past the grey screen and the apple logo and the rolling circle. I have tried every method and I am desperate to do anything to start my computer even erase the entire disc. I have contacted the Apple store and they told me the cost will be equivalent to $600 to just repair it and no way I will be able to afford it.I am willing to do anything and even erase my entire disc. However, for that the instructions on the Apple page state that 'Insert your Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 installation disc'. However, I do not have my installation disc Is there any other way I can erase the OS system and at least reboot my Macbook?

MacBook Aluminum :: Apple Icon Turns To Circle With Diagonal Line / Slash
My Macbook won't start. When I turn on the power, the apple icon appears but then after a while it changes to a circle with a diagonal line/slash, then it just shows a gray screen.

The last time I used the computer I did several software updates. Could this be causing the problem?

MacBook Pro :: Computer Starts With Gray Apple Screen Then Turns White
I am trying to fix a friends macbook pro. When I turn it on the screen shows the apple and the spiral underneath it spinning like it should then when it stalls for .2 seconds it goes to a white screen then there is vertical purple lines in groups across the screen. So the screen is white/purple. Then it fades to just white and I cant do anything.

I hooked up my monitor with a DVI cable to see if it was the motherboard that was possibly bad but the monitor works just fine with the cable. I can use the computer with the laptop keyboard/mouse and it works just fine. The laptop screen just stays blank the whole time. I uploaded a vid to utube for it. If anybody has any ideas for me please help. I dont know if this is a monitor problem or the inverter or the motherboard, possibly some other piece of hardware?

PowerPC :: White Screen With The Apple Logo And Spinning Circle / Large Fan Not Working
I just acquired a G4 MDD Power Mac. Dual 1 Ghz processors.I pulled the HD out of my older g4, connected it, and powered the machine up. The HD has OSX 10.5 and works fine in the older G4.

The first thing I notice is that the Small fan (in the door) is spinning, but the Large fan under the Power Supply is NOT. The red light on the Motherboard is on.

What happens is that all I get is a white screen, with the Apple Logo, and the spinning circle. it never acceses the hard drive and boots into 10.5 What does this point to? I hope the Dual processors are not the problem here. But that large fan not spinning worries me.

MacBook :: Won't Boot Past Gray Screen With Apple Logo And Then Shuts Off
This morning, I would turn it on and it'd go to the grey screen with the Apple logo for a few seconds and then go to the icon that is a circle with a line through it. After reading online, I was able to boot it up in Safe Mode. I went to Startup Disk in Preferences. I chose the MAC OS X, xxxx and then clicked the lock to prevent further changes and then clicked restart. Now when I turn on the macbook, it goes to the grey screen with the Apple logo for at least two-three minutes and then just shuts off. Won't boot into Safe Mode now. I already tried the Command-Option-P-R keys trick like five times.

MacBook :: (2008) Won't Boot / Work - Stuck On Gray Apple Logo Screen
For several weeks, my black MacBook (2008) has been acting odd. Certain applications won't open, and when I attempt to open them, the computer makes a quiet clicking noise, like the drive is failing. Last week, when trying to boot it, the thing just wouldn't. Stuck on the grey Apple logo screen. Assuming a hard drive problem or failure, I ran the tests. I ran Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard install disk, checked & repaired permissions, checked & repaired disk. All okay. I ran the Apple Hardware Test from the install disk that came with the computer, using the test that runs for an hour or so, and all appears to be fine. The computer won't boot into safe mode. I've tried flashing the PRAM. I doubt I could achieve much through target disk mode, as I've already run Disk Utility. What's left to do? Something doesn't add up here.

Mac Mini :: Turns On But Hangs At Apple Logo Screen
The little progress spinner thing below the apple just spins and spins. The computer said that several apps stopped responding and had to quit after falling asleep watching a movie in VLC, which had error logs that had frozen on the screen as well saying, "Computer too slow?" from dropped frames apparently. Not normal. Also, yesterday, when waking it up from the display shutting down, the whole screen was gray and smeared looking. There was nothing recognizable at all on the screen, and I hit the power button quickly for it to sleep, and back again and it worked fine for the rest of the day. Its a 1.66 Core Duo Mac mini w/ 2gb of RAM.

Software :: IMac Turns On And Suck At Apple Logo Screen
Came home from work the other day and my iMac (20" iMac from '07 / Snow Leopard) was frozen, did a hard restart and it booted up fine without much of a problem. Everything was running very sluggish so I began to verify the disc through utilities at which point it froze again, now whenever I restart I get stuck at a white screen with apple logo and something spinning underneath it. The longest I've let it sit at that screen is about an hour or so, it gets extremely hot though so I'm hesitant to leave it any longer.

I've tried a few suggestions already, safe mode with no luck, disc target onto my macbook with no luck and I've tried "/sbin/fsck/ -fy" at the command prompt which returns something along the lines of Harddrive can not be repaired. The most important thing to me right now is being able to access some of the files on there if it is not a total loss. I've back up about 2 months ago, so it wont be a total loss, but like I said, would prefer to salvage anything I can.

Desktops :: Computer Boots Without Showing The Gray Screen With Apple Logo?
I'm noticing some weird behavior in my Mac Pro first gen.

Basically, when I start it up, the displays just stays black for some time, until the Desktop loads up and the computer is functional, but never displays the gray screen with the Apple logo. This just happened all of a sudden and stayed like this.

I know is not a big deal now, but I'd like to sell it in the near future and this could be problematic for that.

OS X :: Can't Boot From Leopard Install - Gray Screen Without Apple Logo?
So, today I tried to install windows through boot camp assistant on my mac. When it got to partitioning my drive I got an error that my hard drive needed repairing. So I opened up disk utility and clicked verify disk (I can't click repair) and got this error Disk Utility stopped verifying Chris Hard Drive because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed. I then researched this and learned to fix the problem I must boot from my leopard install disk and use the DU from their. Unfortunately I don't have access to the disk. But I have the install disk from my old macbook (the white one) so I used this. I put in the disk and shut down. When I turn it on I hold C but all I get is a grey screen but with out the apple logo. When I try turning it out holding alt I don't get the option of the CD just Chris Hard Drive. But when I boot up holding D i do get to the hardware test screen but I get the error that's something like "Hardware test does not support this hardware". Will the Leopard install of a different type of macbook not work on my new macbook pro (13" aluminium)?

PowerPC :: System Making Loud Noises / Gray Screen With The Apple Logo At Startup
I have a Rev A 12 inch Powerbook - 867 mHz, 640 RAM, 40 GB hard drive. The machine's always been reliable and has performed great over the years. I bought it the last week of July, 2003.

Yesterday, the Pbook was shut down, and I press the on button so it would boot up. Almost immediately, the hard drive makes a loud, whirring noise. The computer advances to the gray screen with the Apple logo, but it doesn't get past that point and the noise continues, as if it's a car engine that just won't start...

I'm going to take it to my local Apple Store in the morning, and hopefully the data, including my nearly 22 GB of music, can be saved. Any thoughts on how to get my computer working again? By the way, it's the original hard drive installed. Hopefully this is enough info to generate some ideas, I'm stumped.

Software :: Unable To Start System / Gray Screen Fades Into White And Apple Logo Never Appears
I have had my MacBook for almost two years and the battery had just died on me. So I sent it back to Apple and got a new one. But ever since switching over to this new battery, my computer has had issues starting up. A grey screen fades into white and the Apple logo never appears. The computer will just stay like that for hours. A friend suggested turning the power off and back on, holding apple+ctrl+P+R, which worked. However, the next time I turned my computer on, the screen stayed white again, without an Apple logo. Can you tell me what the deal is? Should I bother reporting this to Apple? Is this permanent damage I'm going to have to go thru everytime I start me laptop? Any way to fix it? Thanks.

Disk Utility in OS X gave me a Invalid key length after checking Catalog file, so I restarted to OS X Install DVD. It did the same thing on the OS X Install DVD. I went to Startup Disk, changed it back to the Mac OS X on Macintosh HD option - so I could go in and back my stuff up. It just goes to apple logo, does the spin thing at the bottom, and goes black. I can't even boot from DVD anymore.

IMac Intel :: Flashing Apple Logo / Question Mark / Slashed Circle On Startup
when I restart an Intel iMac - 2006, white plastic case - start-up chime works but then I get a bluish-white screen with a gray apple and a flashing question mark and one of those slashed circles (like for a "do not enter sign") also flashing and both superimposed and alternating over the apple logo...

my friend said that the iMac didn't work for a time after a power surge (even though she was using a surge protector) but after several months she tried it again but all she saw was a flashing question mark...until she tried to upgrade to a new OS (btw, when she initially inserted the new install DVD, there was a message that it was not compatible right before the superdrive (or combo drive - I'm not sure which it has) started having a problem...

so, anyone know what the flashing apple logo/"?"/"slashed circle" means? could it be related to the power surge? how can I tell?

My wife's macbook pro will not login properly. We get the gray screen with the spinning circle but then it goes blank. I can ssh into her laptop but not being a mac person, I can't do much to diagnose the problem. This is the second time this has happened -- the first time was a few months ago and we fixed it by reinstalling. But that seems a bit brute force and I'd like to see if we can fix the problem without such extreme measures.

OS X Tiger :: Gray Screen With Spinning Logo
I had the Grey screen with the spinning logo for two days on my Macbook Pro (2006, running 10.4.11). I connected it to another mac in target disk mode, retrieved my files, and also deleted a file I had recently installed for an external modem that I believed was causing me problems. I then was successfully able to boot in safe mode, and then in regular mode. Now, I am on my desktop again, but I am noticing errors. It says I have 0 k of space, although I know I am running with only about 1 g of free space (not enough) I know that it is more than zero. Also, I am trying to delete files and it says "this file will be deleted immediately" and it doesnt even sit in the trash. Then it gives me no more space. Also, I am having trouble opening applications and accessing files.

Also, I can not seem to do anything with the modem for which I deleted the file. Although I do think this was a good move to delete the file in target disk mode (which I was shocked to see that it worked, I had just tried for the heck of it), I think that now I am in trouble because I can not seem to delete the modem and I am having all of these other problems. Time to reinstall? DU reports no errors, both on my computer and on the install disks. Also, no hardware problems reported. Also, I am concerned because I have it partitioned with Windows. I am assuming that I can erase my mac disk and nothing should happen to my windows this correct? Also, my install disk is 10.4.6, but I can update after I reinstall right?
