Mac Pro :: Dual Graphics Card - Better Performance When Playing Games?

Feb 27, 2009

I have a 2 x 2GHz Dual Core Intel Mac Pro, with 9GB of DDR2 RAM and 2 Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT graphic cards each running a Samsung 24 inch screen. I recently bought Call of Duty 4 and found that the game runs terribly on anything higher then around medium sort of settings. I know the 7300 Graphic cards aren't the best for gaming, but they have done the job for me perfectly until now. I'm a photographer so I calibrate my screens with a Spyder and run a separate colour profile through each video card per screen, and its always calibrated perfectly.

I'm just curious if there is any actual performance advantage of having 2 video cards other then running a separate colour profile through each card? So for example, If I'm playing call of duty and only 1 screen is displaying information, does the other card just sit there, or does it jump on board and process information for the game being played? Because I would have thought having 2 7300's would somewhat give better performance during gaming then just the one?

MacBook Pro :: Intel Hard Drive Graphics Card - Drain Battery?

Jul 11, 2010

I keep seeing different anecdotes about people having lagging issues with the Intel HD graphics card. Is it really that bad? It would be a real pain to have to keep it on the nVidia card all the time, even when unplugged. I'm afraid that it will really drain the battery a lot faster than having the Intel on. Anyone have any estimates of this? It's one of the more worrying things about the Pro.

PowerPC :: G5 FPS VS Intel - Speced Graphics Card

Why is it that an Imac G5 doesn't perform nearly as well as even the Core duos in terms of FPS?Why is it that the PPC artictechture seems to not be able to run games as well, even with a comparably speced graphics card?I can't really seem to formulate my question:Let's pretend we have two computers that are exactly the same speed. (Yes I know Intel macs are way faster than PPC)WHY oh why would the PPC computer do terribly compared to the Intel?

Intel Mac :: Mid 2011 Graphics Card Overheating?

Apr 13, 2012

I haven't installed any new software in the last 3 months. About 2 weeks ago the iMac shut down on me out of nowhere. I put my hand on the top-rear and it was really really hot. I left it for an hour and tried to start it up again. A progress bar showed underneith the apple logo at boot up. When  it got to about 15% it shut the computer off again. It did this over and over. I restored from a Time Machine back-up and it worked. I started monitoring the temperatures inside and it seems my graphics card (the AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB) runs constantly around 80 degrees C. That's hot. I'm not doing anything besides browsing and listening to iTunes so I don't know what could be stressing the GC. Nothing is out of the ordinary in the Activity Monitor.

Intel Mac :: Upgrade Graphics Card Mid 2010?

May 18, 2012

I've been reading about others attempting and succeeding upgrading their late 2009 model graphics card. I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade the iMac Mid 2010, ATI Radeon HD5670 (512MB)? While the current card is not bad itself, it still lags in certain aspects (i.e. gaming).

Intel Mac :: Upgrading A Graphics Card For 21.5"?

Jun 25, 2012

Basically, I want to make my games run alot smoother. And just being honest, the default graphics card is awful. I want to run more graphic intensive games. I've read that the graphics card slot is small, so it can't run great graphics cards. I understand this, but I believe the current one I have (ATI Radeon HD 4670) is 512mb, I'm looking for a 1 GB or 2GB graphics card. Is that possible to run in this machine? Money isn't a problem, I got Bootcamp to speed up my PC, that sorta worked. But I need a graphics card.

Intel Mac :: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS Graphics Card Bad?

Apr 13, 2012

My 24" iMac has been exibiting strange behavior lately...  It appears to be if a graphical nature where the screen will randomly flicker or go blank in a variety of colors (black or white or yellow or red or blue).  Sometimes a preceeding indicator that this is going to occur is that the system becomes on responsive or extremely delayed, text and other graphics appear garbled/corrupted/scrambled.

I've used Mac Hardware Test, Disk Utility, TechTool Pro 6, anti virus software - even took it to a local authorized Mac repair shop (not Apple Store) and the results are the same - Everything LOOKS fine with no problems reported.  I've reinstalled the OS and even gone as far as completely wiping the drive and starting from scratch, just incase it is/was some kind of odd software conflict.  Yet, the problem persists and the Console always captures something like this just before another epic fail:

4/13/12 5:55:50.000 PM kernel: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x8 = Fifo: Watchdog Timeout Error

4/13/12 5:55:51.000 PM kernel: IOVendorGLContext::ReportGPURestart

4/13/12 5:55:51.000 PM kernel: 0000006e

MacBook Pro :: How To Know Which Graphics Card Is Being Used

Sep 26, 2009

Basically, I wanted to just go on a simple game of Runescape with a friend of mine, and on High detail it was lagging... Now I'm sorry, but I have run High Detail on a freakin 4 year old dell with a 128mb internal gfx card and it hasn't lagged.

Is there a way I can check which graphics card is being used? Is there a way I can force it to use the 9600M GT?

MacBook Pro :: Graphics Card Not Changing?

Sep 16, 2009

Regardless of wether the computer is set for High Performance or Better energy Savings in System Prefs, its always seems to default to 9600M. It worked fine for about a month before the problem developed. The problem itself isn't that recent but it was over summer and didn't bother me a lot because I was at home a lot, but now that I am at College, having a computer that can hit 8 hours of battery life instead of ~2 would be really good.

I went to system Profiler to make sure that the OS could still detect the 9400 and it does. The problem developed under Leopard and continued into Snow Leopard. All software is up to date and all Firmware updates have been applied.

Mac :: MacBook Video Card And Graphics?

Oct 4, 2009

I'm not exactly hardware savvy, so please bear with me.I've been looking into some cool video games for my MacBook (white, couple of years old, Leopard), and it appears I need a new video card/graphics/whatever. I think it's GeForce or something.I've heard in the past that the video card/graphics could not be upgraded in the Macs. Not sure if this is true or if it has changed. Is there any possible way on Earth that I could send the MacBook into a shop and get the video card/graphics updated? It doesn't have to be Apple; a genuine third party would do.

MacBook Pro :: Can I Use Same Graphics Card For Two Revisions Of MBA

Apr 15, 2010

Do you guys think that the next revision of the MBP (late 2010/early 2011) will keep using the GeForce GT 330M? Looking back on the MBP's history, it seems that they usually keep using the same graphics card for two revisions. I hope this doesn't hold true because I'm planning to upgrade later this year hehe :PI hope Apple starts implementing better GPUs on their laptops once Steam and other famous gaming platforms/games make it to OSX.

MacBook Pro :: Graphics Card Not Switching?

Feb 5, 2012

I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 (Mid-2010). I have auto graphics  switching turned on in the Energy Saver prefs. But it never switches. It stays on the nVidia card all the time.

I have tried switching to Text Edit, Mail, BBEdit, and other non-graphics intensive apps. It stays on nVidia. It stays on nVidia even when I unplug and use battery power.

I can manually change it to Intel, and it works fine. When I change it back to auto switching, it stays on nVidia continuously.
